I just wanted to point out the fact that, even with her gem broken, Lapiz still managed to control an entire ocean and if it wasn't for Steven, the gems would have probably lost.
Part of what makes Steven knocking Garnet's visor off so chilling is partially due to one thing: In some regions, the episode Arcade Mania was censored or even cut due to the whole "Meat Beat Mania" thing, and until Mirror Gem that's the only time we see Garnet's eyes. For those regions where Arcade Mania was cut, THIS was the first time they ever saw Garnet's eyes, and the third eye can be quite shocking if you don't know it's there
In a similar vein, I skipped it completely on accident. Didn’t look up a watch guide or anything and the episode isn’t too terribly important to the overall plot iirc, so I just didn’t know the episode existed. So when that moment happened, I had a similar thought of “holy shit-.”
When a Gem’s gem is cracked, it creates inconsistencies like when Amethyst was majorly glitching when she got cracked, Lapis lost her eyes and wasn’t able to use her Gem weapon which were her water wings
Pearl admitted that she didn't realize how strong Lapis's powers were, even with a badly cracked gemstone. It may be that some gemstone species can take major damage better than others, and Gems of one type might not be aware of the durability of the gemstones of other types.
A reminder that Lapis was capable of manhandling Steven, the Crystal Gems, nearly drowning Connie, and stealing Beach City’s part of the ocean all at the same time, all while her gem was still cracked. That should give you an idea of how strong she is, even in that weakened state.
From here on out, things will never be the same... Random note: The muted colors during the climax of 'Mirror Gem' really helped in setting the mood for the sudden tone shift of the plot.
When Steven knocked off Garnets visor gave me chills when I first saw it back in like 2015 and also Lapis feeling trapped and wanting to go home I think about 5 to 6 thousand years (I think) being in there still kinda stings. ESPECIALLY after seeing how far her character has come
Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem were made as the mid-season one finale, but they were also intended to serve as the series finale in case SU was cancelled in the middle of s1, something quite possible considering the slow world-building of SU and its lack of "plug-in anywhere" stories. It really wasn't until late season two that the Crewniverse were reasonably confident that Cartoon Network was going to support them for the long haul. Lapis Lazuli's voice actor is Jennifer Paz, while Pearl's is Deedee Magno Hall; since Jennifer Paz originally auditioned for Pearl's voice it's not surprising that there are similarities. Joel Hodgson from early Mystery Science Theater 3000 does the voice of Mayor Dewey. You've noticed even with Monster Buddies and An Indirect Kiss that the tone of the series is shifting a bit; at the least the scope is beginning to widen beyond the Crystal Temple and Beach City. You've recalled the Strawberry Battlefield, and might remember the Gem armory from Lion 2, so there have been clear hints of a past conflict. The lore will be accumulating fast, especially towards the end of season one. The Crystal Gems (especially Pearl) were clearly wrong about Centipeetle, although there thought they were protecting Steven. Even Garnet can lose her self-control, as we saw when she was part of Sugilite.

Great reaction, this was intended once as a series finale cause the show hadn't been renewed at the time I believe, Lapis' VA is not the same as Pearls although their voices do sound similar, the season finale is just a bit more intense I'll love to see your reaction to it and also watch the outros they're kinda slightly important. Also I want to give a short PSA to the SU fanbase, I love Pearl as much as one person can, she has been my favourite since forever and there are lots of reasons to love her, that being said she also has reasons to be disliked and every person experiences shows/characters differently, so don't bother creators for not liking this or that character specially since they haven't experienced all their character development. And also remember that the fanbase has this infamous reputation for their toxic fandom so be aware of it and try not to add to these actions.
This two-parter splits season 1A and 1B. Also "Mirror Fight" is easily top 5 OST of the whole series, Lapis's Heavy Bass and Drums (and later Celesta when the fight is ending and she's not as angry) are prevalent throughout, but there's also the individual sections of Garnet's Synth Bass, Amethyst's Electric Drums, Pearl's Piano, Lion's Xylophone and Steven's Chiptune as they fight the clones and later Steven's Strings when he uses his shield, as almost every important gem and relevant humans have their own instrument associated with them that can be heard when they're on screen and BGM is playing. Even fusions combine the instruments of their parts into their themes, while still having their own leifmotifs.

This is the mid-season finale for the first season. The other season all end up being 26 episodes, with this one being 52, so it's like a finale really.
YES, I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!! These 2 episodes were the ones that made me fall in love with the show around 2014 or so, easily a highlight on the entire season and it opened the door to a much bigger lore and storyline that we have yet to discover The Soundtrack 'I Am Lapis Lazuli' still remains as one of my absolute favorite OSTs from this show to this day, it's just so gorgeous and it fits perfectly with the scene where it plays. I'm so hyped to see your reactions to some of the future episodes that, while a lot may not be important to the plot in general, some of them do have great info on the world and about the gems (Next one ''Space Race'' being a good example) PS: This was the half-season finale, the first season of the show was divided into 2 halfs of 26 episodes each (well, kinda like 26-24 but that was only to get the season finale better scheduled) so it kinda makes sense to see it as a season finale
i don't know if the comic is canon to the show but in the comic steven went to visit connie in school and steven attended that school for a day he took a test and we learn that steven is an advance learner like steven know maybe high-school/college level stuff and pearl was like "gems ways of learning is more advance than your primitive way" or something like that
I love Lapis's debut! I don't know which episode I like better. I love the chilling/sinister vibes of Mirror Gem, but I also love the space backgrounds in Ocean Gem. If you guys are happy you picked up SU now, I'm so excited to see how much you like the later episodes after S1.
Maybe? The reason we brush our teeth is because the buildup of plaque that can damage the structure of our teeth, because it causes cracks and cracks can propagate. If Steven can heal cracked bones, then it confirms he can heal cracks, but also teeth aren’t bones, they’re modified scales that grow from the skin layer. And also, while bones will try to kinda grow/fuse themselves back together if broken, teeth don’t do that. So the real question is how does Steven s healing work? Is it an acceleration of natural healing processes, a reversal of time to before the injury, or a subconscious knowledge (omnient or learned) of how things “should” be and retuing them to that state. option 1, no he still needs to brush his teeth because teeth don’t heal themselves. Option 2yes and 3 maybe. But option 1 is refuted by connie’s eyes since eyes also don’t do that naturally. Option 2 is always going to be strange in a logistical story sense, and is disproven later as steven’s healing did “heal” but it did not revert to a previous state, wich leaves option 3, witch is also strange. for example, we know his saliva is everywhere in his mouth but what do you apply it to to heal? The jaw or the tooth? The enamel of the tooth is what would need repairing for the argument of tooth brushing but the outside of the tooth is not alive, it’s like a fingernail or hair. Applying it to the jaw tho? Biologically speaking, the human jaw is not programmed to grow another tooth after your adult set other than wisdom teeth, it’s “fixed” state is oblivious to the presence of teeth. But that’s also true of connies eyes. Biologically speaking connies eyes were also “fixed”before steven healed them, but there’s also a regeneration (or lack therof) argument. We never see Steven regenerate flesh or bone. Only fix what’s broken, but still physically exists. Assuming this is a rule, he couldn’t tell the jaw to generate a new tooth, he could only fix an existing ’broken’ one, but he could only fix a broken tooth if his powers recognize the non-biological enamel as something that can be “healed”. TLDR: based on our evidence, it depends on if Steven’s powers recognize cracked enamel, a non-alive but biologically produced substance like fingernails are, to be something that can be ‘healed’. This being true would also imply Steven could cut a hair from his head, lick it, and reattach it to the strand it had been cut from good as new. My gut is saying no, I don’t think that makes much sense, and therefore Steven still has to brush his teeth, but Im not the final say. Seeing as we see him continue to brush multiple times I think like the writers feel he needs to.
So... spoiler warning in case I'm mis-remembering the order of episodes: Steven back-handing Garnet becomes even more serious when you remember Garnet's future-sight... like... for how constantly she is watching multiple possibilities, for Steven to actually hit her glasses off she literally has to NEVER have seen the possibility of Steven acting like that 🤔
it's also a running joke, in another episode steven says to her "ready, freddie?" and she's like "i've told you my name's lapis", she just can't understand why steven does that lol
I've seen a lot of things talking about Lapis's redemption arc or how she was a bad guy in season 1 and I never understand it. How is she the bad guy? She was injured and locked away for millennia and just wants to be left alone. 13:06 She's essentially attacking her abusers because they chased her. You could argue she stole the ocean which was bad for humanity, but does she even realize that? The Chrystal Gems don't care that much about how things affect humans and they save humanity, why would Lapis?
not sure how far ahead you are on patreon, but once you get to season two you should definitely watch (and hopefully react to) the extended intro!! it's really great and gets you hyped for what's to come that season, I still remember how excited the fandom was when that intro came out :D
I know further ahead but are you gonna react to the extended intro? Preferably before Sworn to the sword. It definitely builds up the hype for season 2.
- Lapis Lazuli is voiced by Jennifer Paz, she has a strong resemblance to Penny from the anime Golden Bat, & with her inside the mirror is a bit of a reference to Echo a nymph cursed to only repeat others because she fell in love with Narcissus who later fell in love with himself when he saw his own reflection in water
Gems are the species, Crystal Gems are the team, corrupted gems are like Hollows in Bleach, being cracked is more like a physical injury which can be healed. The Crystal Gems (probably) assumed Lapis was corrupted as well as cracked.
Episode 26 felt like a season finale because it was the end of the first half of the season (the creators went on break before the next episodes) plus, they didn't know if the show was going to continue or not. Very excited for the future episodes!! :)
For a jem being corrupted is like being infected and being shattered is death itself, there is no coming back from that. Thats the difference destween those 2 things. And don't worry, you will get the back story of why some jems are currently corrupted and others like the cristal jems aren't.
well it's a midseason finale. with 50+ episode seasons you kinda have to do that if you don't want the show to feel like its going on forever between arcs. plus the show was orignally commissioned for 25 episodes to see if it would get popular, which is why the first 25 eps have this more traditional early 2010's feel before it gets a bit more experimental
The rest of S1 is going to build some more lore & fusions. If you guys are shocked by this mid-season finale (aka S1A), I can't wait for your reaction to the actual S1 finale (S1B)
You have reached the Mid-Season Finale on UA-cam, from here on things are going to get very interesting or at least will get more interesting more often.
I've been waiting for you guys to get to this pair of episodes and to Lapis Lazuli, one of my favorite characters. This is very much where Steven Universe started changing from a quirky, fun scifi-comedy-slice of life-fantasy series (god it covers so many genres) to something much bigger, pretty much got me hooked from this point onwards. To answer a question-these episodes both are and aren't a finale of sorts. The showrunners were uncertain whether or not Cartoon Network would pick up the rest of the series at this point so it serves as a potential series finale and then a mid-season finale after the fact (Season 1 has more episodes than later seasons. Notably there's a few Season 2 episodes aired out of order that were meant to be before the Season 1 finale, Hulu's airing order is incorrect after a certain point. I'll leave the order in a sub-comment in case no one's mentioned it) Anyway, look forward to you guys watching and enjoying more of the show, its slowly going to get more engrossing, intricate and plot/character-heavy from here on out :)
So, episodes aired out of order: S1E36 "Warp Tour" and S1E37 "Alone Together" are supposed to be swapped. S1E51 "Open Book" should be after S1E45 "Rose's Scabbard" and before S1E46 "The Message." S1E50 "Full Disclosure" and "S1E52 "Joy Ride" should actually be the first couple episodes of Season 2 (so the S1 finale should be "Jail Break.") S2E1 is the non-canon crossover episode with another show, Uncle Grandpa, called "Say Uncle." You can pretty much skip that one. Then what's listed on Hulu as S2E2 and S2E3, "Story for Steven" and "Shirt Club" were also supposed to air in Season 1, before "The Message" and after "Open Book" respectively. Of course you can just ignore all that but that's the intended airing order in case you're interested. Hope that was more helpful than annoying :)
the first season has 52 episodes and all the next ones have around 25, i beline that they originaly structured all the season as such but because contract/airing/production resons the first 2 ones ended up being market as one
Oh believe me, u will learn all the answers to ur questions later down the line. As for the difference between Crystal Gems and other gems, u'll learn that in time as well. But from what Lapis said it's implied that other gems don't care for Earth as much as the Crystal Gems do, if they care for it at all. All I'm gonna say is: pay attention to stars, rombs and triangles.
I know this sounds stupid but doesnt water have the ability to hold lots of memory? Thats why lapis was known to be in a mirror "all knowing" about gem history to the point steven doesnt need school?
Oh fuck it's happening! Edit: First Second Edit: Just checked the list and I'm suddenly very bleak at how long we've got before things properly link back up again. Season 1 is great but if it were steak it'd basically be pure fat with a few pockets of perfectly cooked meat spread throughout.

@@serpentmaster1323 dear god thats a very long comment that i am not reading💀
"it should only be following orders" LMFAOOOOOOO
My favorite character with my favorite power, lapus lazuli xD she wields such insane power over such a large area that just boggles the mind.
So... spoiler warning in case I'm mis-remembering the order of episodes:
Steven back-handing Garnet becomes even more serious when you remember Garnet's future-sight... like... for how constantly she is watching multiple possibilities, for Steven to actually hit her glasses off she literally has to NEVER have seen the possibility of Steven acting like that 🤔
THIS IS WHERE THE SHOW KICKS IN WOOO
THATS WHY SHE USED THE NAME BOB IN BASEBALL :0 (this will make sense to only the people who have watched ahead lol)
it's also a running joke, in another episode steven says to her "ready, freddie?" and she's like "i've told you my name's lapis", she just can't understand why steven does that lol
Wow seeing you guys actually support the crystal gems for once is really surprising.
And now this is where the plot slowly starts to finally happen 🤩
I count these episodes as the turning point of season 1, its really only up from here, im SO EXCITED!!
Now we dive in the gem universe! 🇧🇷
not sure how far ahead you are on patreon, but once you get to season two you should definitely watch (and hopefully react to) the extended intro!! it's really great and gets you hyped for what's to come that season, I still remember how excited the fandom was when that intro came out :D
They already done with season 1 😁
“I’m so happy we got bullied into watching this.”
Crystal gems are those who sided and fought alongside rose quartz (Steven’s mom) against home world and the Diamonds
episodes 25 and 26 were more of a "mid-season finale", thats why you were getting those vibes!
AHHHHH!! I’ve been waiting SO LONG for you guys to get to this episode, and I can’t wait to see it
Lapis Lazuli is such an excellent character.
On the whole « gems trying to kill them ». Technically they only threaten Steven’s life. The other gems are perfectly fine 😂
I feel like this is the turning point where the show reslly gets good.
well it's a midseason finale. with 50+ episode seasons you kinda have to do that if you don't want the show to feel like its going on forever between arcs. plus the show was orignally commissioned for 25 episodes to see if it would get popular, which is why the first 25 eps have this more traditional early 2010's feel before it gets a bit more experimental
Yes! Oh! We're getting to the juicy parts!
This is technically a season finale, season 1 was developed as seasons 1 and 2, but got merged and is commonly referred to now as season 1a and 1b
11:50
Hmm, Interesting question.
We'll wait and see
this is when steven universe starts to get real with emotions n shit
The rest of S1 is going to build some more lore & fusions. If you guys are shocked by this mid-season finale (aka S1A), I can't wait for your reaction to the actual S1 finale (S1B)
It's not the season finale, it's the turning point, where the plot seriousnes butts in and starts to seep into the series.
Hope that was more helpful than annoying :)
where is the episode 23 & 24
the first season has 52 episodes and all the next ones have around 25, i beline that they originaly structured all the season as such but because contract/airing/production resons the first 2 ones ended up being market as one
Oh guys by the way Hulu only has up to season 4 but there’s 5 seasons + a movie and an epilogue series
this was a great ep please keep in mind how big lapis' crack in her gem was for later
Oh no, OH NO, I cringed so bad when you mentioned Greg and amothest TwT
Coprolite just got real!
One of this shows greatest strengths is it's intrigue
Steven you were in "school" for all of 5 minutes, you can't just declare its summer vacation after one lesson was ended by equipment not working
I love how excited he is about school being out despite having only had 5 minutes of it. It's like school was just a means to summer vacation.
Oh fuck it's happening!
Edit: First
Second Edit: Just checked the list and I'm suddenly very bleak at how long we've got before things properly link back up again. Season 1 is great but if it were steak it'd basically be pure fat with a few pockets of perfectly cooked meat spread throughout.
This isn't a season finale but i definitely feel like this is when the show really begins
To give you an idea. The homeworld created the lapis lazuli to terraform planets. That's how powerful Lapiz is, even with her gem cracked.
Yay, we finally meet my favorite gem!
Amethyst and Greg hahahaha
“Im so happy we got bullied into watching this”
Trust me those that have heard it from others feel the same way
So is there a reason the previous episodes are missing? Are they patreon exclusive? Copyright struck? Technical issues?
