- NATO has kicked off a training exercise with more than 20,000 soldiers Monday in Finland, Norway and Sweden with the region set to become a fully NATO territory within days. CBS News senior foreign correspondent Holly Williams reports.

Finland soldiers are the serious real thing.
We will see that now when Finland tries to invade Norway in this exercise.
Norway would definitely be worth invading for the Finns.

Except for those 20 of 31 allies that still are not spending the bare minimum of 2% of GDP they committed to spend and the NATO Secretary General says is a bare minimum starting point.
@@506thparatrooper actually no its 18 countries will be at or above the 2% target this year 2024,( and 19 counting Sweden) , this as by Secretary General Stoltenberg ,the number he stated. and another 5 countries or so are between 1.5 and 2%, like France at 1.9% , and only a few countries below 1.5% , interestingly one of them being Turkiye.

@@mnufeld8448 The NATO Secretary General said on 14 February 2024, he EXPECTS there to be 18 (19 with Sweden) of 32 countries 10 years after promising to spend the minimum of 2% of GDP. If history is any guided those expectations are consistently disappointed.

CBS, I recommend that you explore further Swedens military, notably the submarine fleet and ther Air Force. The reason, it's not just about home grown tech and hardware such as the submarine fleet is well trained, well equipped and is unique in operating in the Baltic.
For the Air Force, it has a truly unique approach to countering Russia compared to other NATO states. This approach is known as BAS 90, it looks dramatic a Swedish made fighter landing on a road and being refuelled and rearmed in under 10 minutes by gen z. This strategy has been highly recommended by a number of subject matter experts (Justin Bronk, RUSI) as the best means for Ukraine.
The European part of NATO grows stronger by the day. While governments of some member states like Portugal are very slow to react and will only gradually hit 2% spending over the next five or so years, most have seriously ramped up spending, acquisitions and recruitment.
The question is, will Trump at the very least stick to his current statement and fully respect NATO's founding principles, or will he abandon it if his mood changes?
And for any isolationists in the US reading this, America needs Europe just as much as Europe needs America. The transatlantic trade alone is existentially critical to the US economy.
If I would be an American, I would hope that Trump simply lands in jail where he belongs.
Portugal is not the richest country. But overall I think we all will manage, regardless of US circus. Tho they sure will be responsible for lives lost, including American voluneers fighting in UA.

There were 2 main events that caused Sweden and Finland to finally join Nato:
1. Putin´s ultimatum (the letters) in December 2021.
2. Russia´s full scale invasion of Ukraine.
It was clear Putin didn´t respect the rule-based world order and was proposing an idea where the strong nations have "influence spheres" over smaller neighbors. When Russia then invaded Ukraine, it was clear he was willing to use alot of force to back it up. This put non-aligned Finland and Sweden´s sovereignity at risk. In the future they could possibly not join whichever alliance they wanted and they were considered to be in the sphere of Russian influence. For Finland who´s been living under Russian "influence" before (see Finlandization), it didn´t sound like a good idea. For Sweden, whose never been conquered and ruled by another nation, it was unthinkable.

More like Europe stays united expecting the American taxpayer and American Soldier making up the difference so 20 of 30 NATO allies, including France and Germany, can fail to meet their commitment in 2014 to spend 2% of GDP. For 75 years, America met her commitment spending 6% or more of GDP for defense.

@@Zynapse Great! Integrating Swedish and Finnish military forces with NATO's is one of the compelling reasons Sweden and Finland joined NATO. Tiny Estonia and other Baltic Countries are also hosting NATO troops on this exercise. Sweden & Finland are stronger as a part of NATO. Hosting does not refute my point that Sweden's percentage of GDP spent on defense was 1.1%. It will take a year for Germany to bring a new artillery shell factory online to produce 200,000 shells a year. That is the equivalent of shells Ukraine fired in one month during the counter offensive. The Nordic countries are hosting this because NATO is about out of time before Putin's anticipated attack on this part of NATO.
@@506thparatrooper Not to mention that we are experts with arctic warfare and can share that kind of knowledge. Acutally in 2022 Sweden spent 1.3% of GDP on defense and it's expected to reach 2.1% of GDP in 2024. I agree that Europe needs to do more which is starting to happen but it will take time. I wish our military was as strong as it was in the 70s/80s though, unfortunately bad politcians alsmost disbanded Swedish defense. We will get there again, question is how soon?

The Baltic Sea or as we like to call it Lake NATO.
Kind of ironic that a big part of that exercise take place in Finnmark, an part of Norway inhabited with people the government have no intent of defending in case on an attack from the big bad neighbour in east. The people up there are nothing but cannon fodder, just like in WWII when that area which is as big as Denmark was almost completely burned to the ground.

Sad and disappointed in Sweden in over making such a decisions it has made to pull it self out of being a neutral country into being a side taker when people die whether their Russian or Ukrainian both countries suffer and while if Sweden were to be neutral the EU would likely not approve of us being, so I guess at the end of the day we have no choice but to abide and send support, supplies and personnel to and for a war that easily can be halted by simple negotiations and agreements :/

Cluless comment, Sweden produces some of the worlds most sofisticated weapon systems ranging from , aircraft, stealth ships, submarines, Archer Artillery system, super long range missiles(Meteor, Taurus), Close Arms (Carl Gustaf), and worlds best troop carrier CV90. It also spends more than 2% of GDP on defence, which is the Nato standard which many Nato members do not reach.

Absolute ignorance. Sweden has an extremely strong military and an extremely strong and advanced defence manufacturing industry. So capable is Sweden's military and defence industry that they repeatedly demonstrated severe weaknesses in the US Navy's anti-submarine defences by repeatedly sinking US Navy ships, including US aircraft carriers, in 2005 and 2006 war game exercises with their high-tech submarine HMSM Gotland. Sweden is a major asset to NATO and will now vastly improve the security of NATO's Nordic flank.

It's a training exercise, you don't need more than 20k soldiers for that. The point is just to study and improve how different nations are able to cooperate and then they can apply their strategies and research to the whole army.
Buddy, you do know that not all countries have hundreds of millions of inhabitants right? And you are also aware that during American military trainings, you don’t have 350 million soldiers running around, right? I don’t think you quite understand what a training exercise is.
