  • In this video I show how easy it is to reconfigure rock-bordered beds by capturing a time-lapse video where I widen my beds and narrow my pathways to make the most of my growing space.

Was on my way out to the plot when I posted earlier. Wasn't having a go at you, man. It's just a pet peeve of mine when I lend people my mattock, and they think the root cutting is a pick.
Lent it to a guy who lived next-door, when he was digging out a section of lawn to put in a drive. Long tail, and a mattock I lent him out of petty because he was trying to dig it all out with just a spade.
When he handed them back to me, the root cutter was like a dog's piss in the snow, as they say round here. It's only mild steel for hacking through biggish roots. He was trying to bust out the remains of a concrete fence post. Which, yes, was concreted into the ground.
Thing is, I have a pick I would gladly have lent him, if he'd had the sense to just ask. Instead, I'm firing up the bench grinder to try and fix my poor abused mattock.

I was out today. I sowed peas, spinach, rapini, radish, and bok choi under cover. Also harvested some fall-sown arugula, komatsuna, and mustard greens for a small salad. The red sorrel is sprouting, as is my garlic.

Greg, you’re the ever-ready bunny out there at 2X speed. I’m doing the same thing in my garden. I have a new garden layout every year.

Love it, I'm the same way with thinking how can I reorganize things to grow even more stuff! Happens every year!

I’ve been doing this the last couple days. I have decided to reduce my bed width from 4’ to 3’ as my lumber rots. I am 5’6 so easier on my short arms to reach the centre. Bonus I gained 50ft2 of growing space by making longer rows as now I can step over the beds. I promised myself this year to only reconfigure not expand but today looks like a good day to add a raspberry patch.

Rock borders next to lawn grass (or pasture) are a nightmare, as the grass grows up between the rocks and it's a pain to clean out. But your use of mulch (years ago) and now sand means that you don't have this problem, and I can see the advantage of flexible beds.

Liked the idea for sand in the paths!

If you have the invasive aquatic Asian Milfoil, it makes a great organic material for gardens. Best part is it is weed seed free. I used it as a mulch and let it decompose between the rows.

Have you thought about going for standardised market garden row sizes? Like 75cm wide so that you can take advantage of all the standardised market garden equipment like row covers and wot not?

    • @maritimegardening4887
      @maritimegardening4887  2 місяці тому +1

Well - it's not a market garden. I think 75 cm is a bit narrow - does not make a good use of lumber. Also - most plants don't need row covers.

Rock borders are nice but the weeds that sprout between the cracks can be a pain.

Yes, I've grown them many times. Plant when you see the yellow dandelion flowers.

You mean a mattock? A mattock has neither a pick nor an axe on it.

How long have you had sand pathways? Are there any downsides (besides hauling it all in 😂)?
I’m redoing my garden this year after 8 years in the same place. I’d never considered using sand in walkways until seeing this. If you had to do it again, would you use bark chips or sand?

Greg, the sand that you use for the pathways in your garden, is it beach sand or Construstion sand?

    Great video Greg
Your garden looks fantastic as usual and your space utlization excellent!
I got greedy on mine and my pathways between my old original beds are too narrow and that part of the garden will be getting a rework this fall.
Spring is in full swing here in SW Ontario and Ifeel like I am late on many things. Planted potatoes and onions yesterday. Harvested a bunch of lettuce, collard greens (overwintered plants) yesterday. Crazy weather, garlic is up about 10" high super mild winter.
    Great video - cheers!
