  • Football commentators, like any individual in any walk of life, are prone to errors. But how can we avoid mistakes? Or if they are to happen, how can we anticipate, limit and disguise them?

Not identifying every single player that touches the ball is an element of the game that is so refreshing compared to many North American sports. Much like there is time in baseball commentary to simply let the game breathe, the space to let a stadium's atmosphere come through to the listener is so very welcome. Interesting to know that the commentating practice is for tradecraft as much as it is to produce the mood from a ground. Excellent stuff, Patrick!

"You see in America we are taught to check a fact before it becomes a fact."
If only that were true of American "soccer" commentators. Watching Italian lunchtime games sometimes at 3:30am, it is that much more frustrating when commentators make errors, particularly factual or pronunciation errors. I am always grateful for professionals like yourself who are truly committed to getting things right, it really makes a difference to me as a fan at any hour. Also, these videos are awesome, thanks for taking the time!

I really appreciate that. You need to have plenty of passion for the product otherwise the match preparation becomes a chore and you’re less inclined to do it carefully. Those early mornings are a real commitment - I love it!

Thank you for posting new video for us!
I always enjoy your serieA commentary.
By the way, is it effective for English learners to watch football games with English commentary to improve their English skills?

My pleasure! I think there’s definitely some value in learning English that way. I might do a video on the subject!

Thanks Patrick! Regarding pronunciation of the player's name, I remember on few occasions when I was live tweeting a game I came across a few names that had sort of offensive meanings in my working language (Farsi), so I had to change their pronunciations on the spot!
BTW can you do more videos about your experience as an interpreter?

Hi Wigan. Yes, it was hard to break into the industry which is why I moved to Milan. There were fewer opportunities than London but also less competition because of limited supply of English commentators
