- In winter one can see the structure of the Bonsai trees much better than in summer. As such, it is a great time to prune and wire. In this video we go into the details of pruning deciduous bonsai in fall.
Winter cuttings: • Rooting Cuttings in Wi...
Drop me a line, and let me know what you do in winter to prepare your trees!
One day I will have a maple that needs this type of work, but until then I love watching you do it! Mine are very much in the grow and thicken stage. This is a lovely tree.
Well.. some trees just need to be purchased. Arakawa take such a long time to bark up.. I have been looking for decent ones for near a decade (During which time a young one would have started to bark up, sigh)
Learned something again! Thank you, Jelle! 🙏
You can see my overwintering next Friday... 😉😜
Have a nice Christmas! See you in 2024! 🙂🙃
Tried to find your overwintering video. Which one is it? Welcome in 2024!
Just the right amount of detail.
thx
You managed to create a very educating video that is such eyecandy, I can't stop re-watching it. Bravo.
Very informative. I like the tree, it has character.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank You for always such detail on pruning.
My pleasure
Very informative. Thank you
Very welcome
Love the thinking out loud how to prune/balance the tree.
For winter prep, i am putting all the smaller trees that lost their leaves together in a sheltered spot.
So to minimize damage.
Sounds great!
Another great video! I love your style, Jelle, and I wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas! 🎄🎄🎄
Happy holidays! Thank you so much!
Thank You.
youre welcome!
Wow! This video was informative!
Woukd love to hear how you treat azalea in winter.
In honesty.. I am working my way into Azaleas. I have regular small-flower hardy azaleas now for a ong time, but the Satsukis only for my second winter. So do not feel I should comment just yet!
As I understand your thought, I still would have taken that thick branch/trunk off, I think it would improve the look of the tree...
Happy Holidays!
Tricky one indeed. Buuut.. I am not sure yet. It is an old tree, and I would hate to make big cuts.
Thank you so much, it is really help me
Glad to hear it!
nice maple
Quite informative
Glad you think so!
Hey Jelle
Das war ein schönes Video mit einem phantastischen Baum! 🤩
Wünsche dir uns deiner Familie ruhige Weihnachten. Danke für die vielen, lehrreichen Videos!
Beste Grüsse, Sebastian
Ha Sebastian, my pleasure!
Great Arakawa, I’ve got a dozen in the ground developing, I hope a couple turn out half that nice. Good point on that big first branch, I’ll keep an eye on mine as they develop to prevent that in the future.
I know you want that first branch to stay but an air layer of it might shorten it and enable some taper to be grown into it,I know it’s a long term approach but could be an option for ya!
Thanks a lot. Will look into that option.
Jelle. This might be the best video i've ever seen on describing the pruning process on a maple. so many others just prune away without deceiving why they are doing it. I've just purchased and Arakawa and I'm wondering if you'll give me some tips on how to get started. Can I show you some pics of what i'm starting with?
Ohw, thank you so much!If you pop the tree agains a neutral background and turing it through 360 degrees in a video on your channel, be happy to take a look.
Your arakawas are amazing! One of my dream species for sure, I've yet to find one at a reasonable price though😅
They are! Hard to find though at age..
wow...Jelle in a Danny Use mode :D
Wow, if ever there is a compliment. Thank you so much!! Do not tell Danny; He would not like that!
That is a very nice tree even with it's not so ideal branch!
:) Thank you so much!
I would do exactly what you are advising if I had such a tree as that one. To remove that side branch would not take it that much further forward and would be a nightmare for wound healing. Greatt content. Cheers
Nah, it is boring. It is mostly discussing peoples trees and the way forward, in Dutch.
Hello Jelle you have good vibes
Thank you so much!
Happy new year! What about a small changing of the front face? On the video it seems that a slightly turn to the right will help to hide the big right branche (pointing more to the back of the tree). The nebari seems still good.... Maybe an other option? ;)
The arakawa is looking great, Jelle. It's.got wonderful cork bark all over the tree. How old do you think it is? Is this the same tree which dried out and was in quite poor health?
To be honest I'd be tempted to remove that large first right branch. I know what you say about a wound but you could thread graft some smaller branches and the wound would cork over given time anyway.
Merry Christmas to your and your family mate
What I understand it is 40 something years. Which is one of the reasons why I am hesitant making drastic changes. I first will try my route. Cutting is still an option in a few years..
👍🌸🙂
:D
Sir very nice JMT. Sir the thick Branch on the Right what you think of Thread grafting on the Lower Part of the Branch then air layer the Top to Make a small Shohin JMT ?
Interesting idea. I will look into this!
Ha my name is mark I am new to your channel and am finding it very interesting
I am also new to bonsai self taught by watching people like yourself I live in Australia and wander if I could ask you a question would you be able to help me with air layering a blue cedar ie best time is it early spring cheers mate
Blue cedar... I do not have experience with the blue atlas cedar. I * think * layering might be tricky. Never seen it done on that species..
So pruning in winter is better for deciduous bonsai?
My wife bought me one thoze tic tok greenhouses on cyber monday for Christmas. I put it together and is very nice. I have all my trees in it. The plastic doesnt seem to be that good, i will replace it with some kind of chicken wire in spring
I am wary of light greenhouses. They heat up fast, and wind and snow can damage these badly.
@@GrowingBonsai I got my eyess on it every day
@@GrowingBonsai also have the bottom buried with very heavy brings in all 4 corners
@@garyjohnson2989 ENjoy :)
I think the tree has much unique character, you made a wise choice not cutting the branch. Thanks for a great video
So nice of you, and I agree :)
Awesome vedio...liked to watch...hope you'll join me, as I'm also covering plant related vedios...happy new year in advance.
Happy new year
