Jelle that was a great success rate on your cuttings. I can't wait to try your technique next spring. Of course thank you again for another informative video!
This was so useful Thank you Jelle. Quick question I want to trunk chop a 8ft Redpoint maple that i have purchased from a garden center. I want to trunk chop it this coming spring of 2024 take it down to about 1-2 foot hight its in a big half oak barrel pot right now. Question is Will it survive such a chop? and shuld i do it in winter not spring? so its dormant
I am NOT sure what a redpoint maple is. BUT, maple backbud very well from such actions, so no worries there. Make sure you chop low enough so you do not have to chop lower in a year or two to get decent taper.
I'm glad you did this video because I have always been unsure about looking to check my cuttings in the autumn. I think I will do that tomorrow...or maybe now! Great success and well demonstrated too. Cheers, Xav
I think you're correct about pond baskets. I have also found very dry roots with trees in these baskets despite careful regular watering. I think the original idea was for Pines and I am going to restrict this method to Pines.
Thanks Jelle I am very concern with this maple,... I started germinating some seeds I bought expensive last year... Now I have aroun 20 and want to propagate but is not easy... I am in souther Chile, start of Patagonia... All information is from northern emisphere, so I have fun trying to convert the seasons.... Actyally spring is on here, with still some cold days and wind... Lots of rain always, and a little lack of sun Still Iam doing well with local trees plus secuoya , oak and maple as outsiders Thanks and cheers from Patagonia
Hi Ludwig, all the way on the other side of the blue marble! Cool. I think it would be best to ensure your seedlings get some size before trying to propagate. You need strong shoots for best rooting!
Great success! Unfortunately i messed up and misplaced my cuttings so they got direct sunlight and were steamed alive :(. Thank you for that very in depth video.
I had a mental lapse and stuck the lychee seedling that had just emerged from the soil into full sunlight for warmth. Here's hoping I have another seed germinate to replace it. :-/
Well done on your successes. I tried growing black pines from seed which worked. I moved some into small pond baskets but they haven't grown as well as those in normal pots. So I agree with your thoughts. Didn't cost much to try though.
Hmm, I might be tempted to use those pond baskets with a slightly less breathable substrate if they're that prone to drying out quickly. My plants haven't taken up _quite_ as much of my schedule yet for me to care for them to that degree.
Hi Brandon, In the bottom of the pot there is some other substrate, probably pine bark, to stop it from washing out. Have a look here for the full description on how I take JM cuttings: ua-cam.com/video/mLRLUcv5Ro8/v-deo.html
Hi Jelle, thank you for making these videos, I find them very helpful and informative. I just wanted to ask you to show what you call "the shed" - is this a greenhouse? I think after care is always very important. I am going to be taking maple cuttings and making air layers in spring 2024 having had some success with air layering this year. Thanks again Jelle, great videos. Regards, Robert.
Hi Jelle! This was a great video. I just purchased a Deshojo and will more than likely do some light pruning in fall. I'm wondering if you think I'd get success if I tried cuttings over winter indoors under grow lights. I realize you don't need a whole lot of light. Wondering if your technique might work instead of just tossing the cuttings.
Hi John, In winter one can take cuttings, but the methods are a little different. Look up "hardwood cuttings" and "winter propagation". Typically it means cuttings in moist sand, mostly burried and wait for spring. Then pot them up individually under shelter for the growing season
@@GrowingBonsai I don’t always comment, but I like your videos . I ’ve been doing bonsai a Very long time, but there is always something New to learn. ☺️
@@GrowingBonsai yes , and I need more experience with maples.I had a Big collection with nativ trees, that I doug up in the nature. I worked with them for 15 years, and always replanting in the fall. Hi Jelle, great vid. I have some European elm seedlings I collected this spring. They are in a seed tray and I would like to pot them up individually. Would this be a good time to do that?
Hi Ard, common advice would be to do this in spring as the buds are starting to open. If you have to, now might work but it is against common practice.
Spring 2024 not so kind to Deshojo maples! Their papery new growth got battered by wind, roots swamped by constant rain, how I wish I had a Poly tunnel!
Hi Jelle, i‘ve made the maple cuttings following your method in April, i think they’re doing well right now, so thank you for all the precious info! According to what have you said here, now i can slightly open the bag and then in october replant them all, right? (I live in Italy) I‘ve also tried to do some juniper cuttings but they’re not doing as well as the maples... is it possibile to put them in a bag too from your experience? Thanks in advance, i really appreciate you! Ps. I don’t know if you know something about Pine grafting, but that would be a very interesting argument for a video
Hi, great job! Your potting soil looks very gritty, what's in it? PS your neighbour must have thought he was working hard while you were playing with your trees 😅
I am more int he field of waiting till later. Hard prune of course means a different thing to different people. But anything larger than a cm or maybe 2 I prefer to do over the growing season. But I am also a practical person and I work my trees when I have time, which does not always lead to the safest approach!
@@GrowingBonsai thanks. I think the sacrificial branch is 15mm now. It grows in an unfortunate angle on the trunk which means quite a big cut maybe 30 cm long and 15mm wide. Really I should have done it last summer.
@@greenmachinesweden Is there a reason to do it now? Could it wait till spring? You can always shorten it, and make the final cut in spring. (but 1.5cm is not all that thick. I am however concerned Sweden could have -5 in 2 weeks if weather turns)
@@GrowingBonsai the only reason beeing space limitations. I could cut partially, but that would not make a good video🤣😅. In my coastal climate constant temperatures below freezing is nowadays not until january. When they come, I always have 5c overwintering room.😀👍
Depends a lot where in the world you are. In the Netherlands, Esveld sometimes carries them. And often specialized bonsai nurseries have them. THey are however most of the time fairly expensive.

Yeah, pines are also why people started using pond baskets!
Love watching and learning more about bonsais. Can you make a video of how you make your substrate?
Yes I can. In fact, it is 80% done and will come out over winter, probably early in 2023 right for potting season!

I put the pots on the ground out of wind and sun.
