Past Lives 5. Barbie 6. Anatomy of a fall 7. Zone of Interest 8. American Fiction 9. My ranking and category predictions 1. Oppenheimer (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Score, Best Sound) 2. Poor Things (Best Actress, Best Costume Design) 3. American Fiction (Best Adapted Screenplay) 4. The Holdovers (Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay) 5. Barbie (Best Song) Good ranking Sean👍 As much as I hate that you put Poor Things in last place, I respect your ranking.

As a point of reference, I think all of these movies have quite a bit of artistic merit and value to them. This is just how I personally rank these ten well made movies 10. Maestro-While there’s plenty of talent on screen from beginning to end, because Cooper didn’t specifically find anything in Leonard Bernstein’s life to actually explore, the movie itself doesn’t feel like it has much to say in my opinion 9. The Zone of Interest-An exploration of how easily some of the most horrific of events in world history can be normalized to be as boring as the most mundane of days of life, which is certainly something worthy of exploring 8. Poor Things-While there are several interesting elements in this movie and a fantastic lead performance from Emma Stone, because this film hit the same note for nearly two and a half hours for me, it didn’t make for the most satisfying experience for me 7. Barbie-Despite not everything about this movie fully coming together, I still enjoyed this film both times I’ve watched it because of its clear vision of what it wants be be, making for a movie that was definitely worth conversation 6. Anatomy of a Fall-A well done and engaging exploration of how human relationships decline and the truth being what you believe it is with Sandra Hüller giving a great performance to tie those themes together 5. Past Lives-Even though I’m not as high on this movie as a lot of cinephiles, this is still an incredibly well done story of how we as people long for the feelings of our past and our life choices shape us over the years 4. The Holdovers-A throwback dramedy that’s consistently funny while being heartfelt at the same time with great performances from Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Dominic Sessa 3. American Fiction-A movie that shows you can explore complex real world ideas through film if you find a clever angle to explore those ideas, which makes for a movie that’s both thoughtful and amusing in equal amounts 2. Killers of the Flower Moon-Even though I’m not specifically a big Martin Scorsese person, that didn’t stop from being another great film from Scorsese that made me feel all of the incredibly heavy emotions I was supposed to feel, all told with phenomenal direction, amazing performances, and fantastic storytelling 1. Oppenheimer-Yet another triumph from Christopher Nolan that’s tackling subject matter I wasn’t interested in at first, but makes for an incredibly compelling film filled with plenty of fantastic performances, incredible cinematography, and ideas and themes that really made me think about the world we live in, making for a film that truly solidified Nolan as the top working director of today in my opinion
Here is my ranking: 10. Maestro 9. American Fiction 8. Past Lives 7. The Zone of Interest 6. Anatomy of a Fall 5. The Holdovers 4. Poor Things 3. Killers of the Flower Moon 2. Barbie 1. Oppenheimer
First year I’ve ever seen all the best pic noms. Usually I only catch about 5 of them tops. Anyways, I’d go: 10. Maestro 7/10 - solid film, but just didn’t resonate with me very much. 9. Barbie 7/10 - same thing, but I found it a bit more fun and enjoyable. 8. The Zone of Interest 8/10 - interesting and unique, but not one I loved tbh. 7. Poor Things 8/10 - I was 200% sure I wouldn’t like it but it somehow clicked in the end. I agree the film is very uncomfortable but to me that was the point. 6. American Fiction 8.5/10 - was surprised by this one, it was clever, funny, and had charm. 5. Anatomy of A Fall 9/10 - it had me glued to my screen! I really enjoyed it! 4. Killers of The Flower Moon 9/10 - brilliant, Scorsese does it again, as do Leo, De Niro, and Gladstone is great as well! 3. The Holdovers 9/10 - my generations Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting, absolutely phenomenal film! 2. Past Lives 9/10 - if it wasn’t for The Iron Claw, this’d be my favorite A24 movie. It also reminded me of Makoto Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters Per Second, but done a bit better! 1. Oppenheimer 9/10 - Nolan made something special here, everything’s to praise about this movie!
10. Maestro 9. American Fiction 8. The Zone of Interest 7. Barbie 6. Poor Things 5. Oppenheimer 4. Anatomy of a Fall 3. Killers of the Flower Moon 2. Past Lives 1. The Holdovers
What you described about movies that everyone else likes and then you watch it and what it was going for doesn't land for you at all is how I feel about The Zone of Interest. I was sitting there throughout the movie just thinking "is this it?" I get what it was trying to do but I don't think it worked (for me) even slightly. 10. The Zone of Interest 9. Maestro 8. Past Lives 7. Oppenheimer 6. Killers of the Flower Moon 5. Anatomy of a Fall 4. Poor Things 3. American Fiction 2. Barbie 1. The Holdovers
Yeah i totally get that. I was struggling to know where to put it. I totally get what they were doing and it's something unique. But I got it in the first 15 minutes. And then you feel weird putting the movie about the holocaust which Spielberg praised as the best holocaust film since Schinder's List near the bottom of the list.
The Holdovers, Anatomy of a Fall, and Oppenheimer were by far my favourites of the batch, but I liked all the nominees this year overall. Would’ve thrown in The Iron Claw and All of Us Strangers though, they were snubbed

It's most certainly extreme to say this when I know there are worst films made out of the large catalogue of films I've seen but honestly I hated poor things so much I am not afraid to label ot the worst film I've ever seen. Even with dysfunctional films like birdemic, I have seen a film like that multiple times with friends as a joke, poor things I never want to watch again
I loved The Holdovers and for the reasons you mentioned; it was my favorite movie in this list. I don’t think it’ll win, but hopefully because it’s an Oscar contender, more people will see it.

Barbie(A hilarious and creative story with some very strong messaging and excellent comedy) 1. Oppenheimer(This is one of the most hauntingly beautiful stories I've seen in a long while)
While I enjoyed _Poor Things_ quite a lot, for the reasons you stated, if it DOES somehow win Best Picture (which I don’t think it will), certain groups in the media will be OUTRAGED when they inevitably watch it only because it won.
The only one I haven’t seen is Anatomy of a Fall but for the rest: 1) Oppenheimer 2) The Holdovers 3) Poor Things 4) American Fiction 5) Killers of the Flower Moon 6) Past Lives 7) The Zone of Interest 8) Maestro 9) Barbie
I appreciate your gross response to Poor Things! Interestingly, that very discomfort you experienced aligns with why it holds a special place in my cinematic favorites. For me, the film resonates as a portrayal of the exploitation of women during their development. Nearly every male character seems to play a role in subjecting the protagonist to manipulation, entrapment, or exploitation. The clever use of a baby's brain as a plot device serves to speed up the delivery of this message to the audience. From my perspective, the film's strength lies in its pro-female narrative. The protagonist confronts these adversities head-on, triumphing over each challenge in her own pioneering manner. Despite making questionable career and personal choices, she grapples with the inherent grossness of humanity, showcasing a profound resilience by the end of the movie and the end of an absolutely awful first part of her life. I not only acknowledge the validity of your views but wholeheartedly agree with them. Your strong aversion to the film mirrors the impact it aims to have. You're awesome Sean, love your videos, even when we disagree!
Ahh, worried about Poor things. Of the BP nominees i’ve seen my ranking was: Poor things Past Lives The zone of Interest Barbie American Fiction Oppenhiemer Killers of the flower Moon To be clear, there’s not a single movie on that list I hate or even didn’t like. Kotfm is on the bottom and I think it’s a masterpiece of a film. Truly an incredible year for cinema, even from movies not nominated for best picture, like Godzilla, Boy and the heron, Spiderverse, and perfect days for me particularly. Poor things was/is my 3rd favorite film, but i’ve seen a lot more discourse on it lately centering around the problematic subject matter. I had always taken it as her brain was maturing unusually fast, as we can see her vocabulary, independence, and understanding for the world evolve as the film goes on. But you made some very valid points in your distaste for the movie. I also think that those around her taking advantage of her for her body was sort of a central theme of the movie, and how some men seem to control people, in this case a woman they “love”, so badly and how some toxic men will react when they lose that control. Bella, having an immature and at the start of the film, not fully developed mind makes her an easy target for those such toxic men, but as time goes on, she grows, and mentally ages, she gets more agency, becoming her own person, unlike what the men around her for the most part want. Sort of barring similarities to the play Pygmalion. Although I understand how people are opposed to the idea of someone with an underdeveloped brain have a load of sex, I do think by the time Bella has left home, she seems to be mentally more comparable to a teenager- still of course disgusting, but I also don’t think the film is glorifying this. Mark Ruffalo’s character is not supposed to be a good person. He’s a villain, manipulating a young woman, taking advantage of her while she is still figuring out the world. This is uncomfortable, but there can be great films and other such media tackling subject matter similar to this, even such beloved films like Call Me By Your Name and Parasite. But I’m glad to hear your take on things, and it’s making me think a lot deeper about the film- so thank you ! Let me know, am I crazy for still finding enjoyment of it ? Technically and artistically, with its unique score and cinematography, its humor, its excellent acting, the beauty in its production design, costumes, hair and makeup, and VFX, as well as its strange, and not exactly crowd pleasing story, that personally I think is about the dangers of men who seek to have full control over the women in their life, going as far as to manipulate underdeveloped minds, and a story of Bella Baxter discovering the world and herself, and breaking free of the desires and control of the men in her life. but that’s just my take, love hearing what you think
I might say that in pretty much every movie there's is a line that says the entire theme of the movie but there are plenty of instances where it has been more subtle.
My ranking: 1. Oppenheimer 2. The Holdovers 3. Anatomy of a Fall 4. Killers of the Flower Moon 5. Past Lives 6. Barbie 7. Poor Things 8. Maestro 9. American Fiction 10. The Zone of Interest
Here's my ranking : 10. The zone of interest 9. Past lives 8. Anatomy of a fall 7. Poor things 6. Maestro 5. Killers 4. The hold 3. Barbie 2. Oppenheimer 1. American fiction
Poor Things is such a weird, polarizing and well done film that I can’t fault them for nominating it. I too think it’s very edgy in a way that steps over the lines sometimes but from a craft and talent standard it’s solid.
1. Oppenheimer (10/10) 2. Killers of the flower moon (9/10) 3. Anatomy of a fall (9/10) 4. The holdovers (9/10) 5. Poor things (9/10) 6. Barbie (8,5/10) 7. Maestro (7,5/10) 8. American fiction (7/10) 9. Past lives (6,5/10) Haven’t seen The zone of interest.
Although I disagree with some of your points (mostly on poor things) I can see where you’re coming from for every single film you talked about. We both have very different tastes in films, but I respect all of your takes in general because I can see that you understand movies extremely well. Love the content and can’t wait to see more movie talk for the next couple of years!
I haven’t seen Maestro, Anatomy of a Fall, American Fiction, nor Zone of Interest. 6: KOTFM 6/10 (no one shoot me) 5: Oppenheimer 7.5/10 4: The Holdovers 8.25/10 3: Poor Things 8.5/10 2: Barbie 9.25/10 1: Past Lives 9.25/10 We clearly have very different respective tastes in film, but regardless of where we may not line up, I think we can both agree Godzilla Minus One should’ve been nominated, and would’ve if not for the fact that it’s a Godzilla film.
I have not seen Poor Things yet but I’ve heard nothing but praise about it. As you kept describing the plot I just kept saying “how… why is… why isn’t anyone else talking about how problematic that it?!?!?”
1. Oppenheimer 2. Poor Things 3. Past Lives 4. American Fiction 5. Zone of Interest 6. The Holdovers 7. Barbie 8. Killers of the Flower Moon 9. Anatomy of a Fall 10. Maestro
I heard of POOR THINGS and admired the makeup and happy to see Emma stone win an Oscar. However I had no idea what the movie was about. Now that you broke down it’s plot, I’m not surprised why Hollywood loved the movie. I’d never watch that movie as it sounds gross and perverted.
Enjoyed the ranking Sean. Here’s my ranking of the Best Picture nominees (w/ ratings) 1. Some of Interest (10/10) 2. Poor Things (10/10) 3. Past Lives (10/10) 4. The Holdovers (9/10) 5. I wanted to like American Fiction way more than I did. To me it came across as structured like Spider Man 3, where different storylines kept interrupting each other. If it had just been a 90 minute, well written satire, or just kept the sibling dynamics without the death/dementia subplots, it would have worked way better.
Sean, thank you for being one of the only voice on the platform who is calling Poor Things out!!! I will not watch the movie on principle and I'm sorry you had to, but I know that was necessary for you to be able to say what you said, dig out the quotes like you did and structure an argument as well as you did. Thank you for not letting yourself be pressured into defending this garbage, it means a lot and shows just how genuine you are on this platform. MASSIVE respect!!!!
@@theemeraldaxe1414 Don't care, still disgusting. It's like saying Licorice Pizza is perfectly fine, as if they didn't spend the whole movie trying to get you to root for and buy into a pedophilic relationship that stays together by the end
@@Robalexe Exactly. The film was basically soft core pornography starring a child in the body of an adult woman for much of the runtime. Just because we as the audience are meant to see it as disgusting doesn't make it any less disgusting. Poor Things succeeded in being a social critique of male exploitation of girls early in their development, but hit the same note over and over again for two hours in order to do so. Every metaphor from Baxter allowing Bella to call him "god" to Duncan hating when Bella educates herself is so unbelievably on the nose. It's as if the screenwriters have no concept of subtlety whatsoever. Terrible film and even worse viewing experience. 3/10, will never watch again.

I usually agree with your rankings. But this was a very conservative take on all these movies. I think that movies are meant to take risks and push the envelope, not cater to most people’s sensibilities. I do agree with Maestro being so low on this list, but I strongly disagree with Poor Things being so low, it was meant to push buttons and evoke reactions and I think that in that way it did succeed. Also, you cannot take merit away from its artistry; it was a beautifully crafted movie, oozing with creativity and character development and phenomenal acting. Also; Barbie was a delicate balancing act and it managed to pull it off. Out of all these movies, I think Barbie will go down as a classic. I completely agree with your top picks though! Would just score Past Lives slightly higher hehe.
A story where a pregnant lady dies and replaces her brain with her unborn child’s brain is crazy enough, having to watch what you know is a baby having sex in her dead moms body is wayyyy too much for me lol.

:43 That's me with The Iron Claw. Yes I know it wasn't nominated but it's being praised a this powerful masterpiece that many feel was snubbed but I thought it was very rushed, hollow and one note. Sure I'm letting my knowledge of the real Von Erich story largely shape that opinion but the movie itself introduced so much of what happened in reality and didn't follow through with it which shows me they could have done more with this film and chose not to & I can't just ignore that & pretend like this was a great movie because I was a Von Erichs fan back in the day
I disagree with your take that Barbie should have been aimed at young girls just because its a toy brand. The Transformer movies and the Michael Bay TMNT movies werent aimed at young boys, despite being based on children cartoons and toys. I think we are just less used to having young girl interests go mainstream. I think grown women can also enjoy some nostalgia packaged with more mature themes. That being said, I also didnt love the movie. Some great performances, beautiful swt design, bit a little too preachy.
Michael Bay's TMNT and Transformer films should have been aimed at young boys and teens, though. That they weren't was a big reason they're such bad movies.
Hey Sean! I’d just like to ask that if there were 5 movies to watch before the Oscars what would they be? I just wanna watch some before the oscars but I only have time for 5
Of the best picture nominees? Oppenheimer, Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon If you want to check out something foreign, Past Lives. if you want to see something very polarizing and sexual...poor things. Holdovers and American Fiction are very watchable and entertaining nominees.
Disagree with your comments about The Zone of Interest. That film is exceptional. It's the kind of movie that will be reflected upon 25 years from now when all the other nominees have been forgotten

My ranking and category predictions
1. Oppenheimer (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Score, Best Sound)
2. Poor Things (Best Actress, Best Costume Design)
3. American Fiction (Best Adapted Screenplay)
4. The Holdovers (Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay)
5. Barbie (Best Song)
Good ranking Sean👍 As much as I hate that you put Poor Things in last place, I respect your ranking.
For my purposes Oppenheimer is objectively the best made film. That said, Past Lives has been my favorite of 2023 since I saw it in July.
Preach
1. Oppenheimer
2. KOTFM
3. Holdovers
4. Past Lives
5. Anatomy of a Fall
6. Poor Things
7. Zone of Interest
8. American Fiction
9. Barbie
10. Maestro
Iron claw snub
We have the exact same top 3. I have Anatomy of a Fall at 4, but I haven’t seen Past Lives
My ranking of the movies I have seen:
1. Oppenheimer
2. Killers of the Flower Moon
3. Barbie
4. American Fiction
As a point of reference, I think all of these movies have quite a bit of artistic merit and value to them. This is just how I personally rank these ten well made movies
10. Maestro-While there’s plenty of talent on screen from beginning to end, because Cooper didn’t specifically find anything in Leonard Bernstein’s life to actually explore, the movie itself doesn’t feel like it has much to say in my opinion
9. The Zone of Interest-An exploration of how easily some of the most horrific of events in world history can be normalized to be as boring as the most mundane of days of life, which is certainly something worthy of exploring
8. Poor Things-While there are several interesting elements in this movie and a fantastic lead performance from Emma Stone, because this film hit the same note for nearly two and a half hours for me, it didn’t make for the most satisfying experience for me
7. Barbie-Despite not everything about this movie fully coming together, I still enjoyed this film both times I’ve watched it because of its clear vision of what it wants be be, making for a movie that was definitely worth conversation
6. Anatomy of a Fall-A well done and engaging exploration of how human relationships decline and the truth being what you believe it is with Sandra Hüller giving a great performance to tie those themes together
5. Past Lives-Even though I’m not as high on this movie as a lot of cinephiles, this is still an incredibly well done story of how we as people long for the feelings of our past and our life choices shape us over the years
4. The Holdovers-A throwback dramedy that’s consistently funny while being heartfelt at the same time with great performances from Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Dominic Sessa
3. American Fiction-A movie that shows you can explore complex real world ideas through film if you find a clever angle to explore those ideas, which makes for a movie that’s both thoughtful and amusing in equal amounts
2. Killers of the Flower Moon-Even though I’m not specifically a big Martin Scorsese person, that didn’t stop from being another great film from Scorsese that made me feel all of the incredibly heavy emotions I was supposed to feel, all told with phenomenal direction, amazing performances, and fantastic storytelling
Good list and thoughts man 👍
Here is my ranking:
10. Maestro
9. American Fiction
8. Past Lives
7. The Zone of Interest
6. Anatomy of a Fall
5. The Holdovers
4. Poor Things
3. Killers of the Flower Moon
2. Barbie
1. Oppenheimer
First year I’ve ever seen all the best pic noms. Usually I only catch about 5 of them tops. Anyways, I’d go:
Of the 6 I’ve seen:
1. Oppenheimer
2. Killers of the Flower Moon
3. The Holdovers
4. Anatomy of a Fall
5. Maestro
6. Barbie
10. Maestro
9. American Fiction
8. The Zone of Interest
7. Barbie
6. Poor Things
5. Oppenheimer
4. Anatomy of a Fall
3. Killers of the Flower Moon
2. Past Lives
10. The Zone of Interest
9. Maestro
8. Past Lives
7. Oppenheimer
6. Killers of the Flower Moon
5. Anatomy of a Fall
4. Poor Things
3. American Fiction
2. Barbie
I have only seen
Barbie
Maestro
Killers of the Flower moon
Oppenheimer
Of the best picture nominees
My ranking from worst to best
Barbie(Still good)
Maestro(on par but I like it slightly more)
Oppenheimer (Awesome)
Killers of the Flower Moon (whole other level)
I only saw 5 of the nominees so:
1: The Iron Claw (The Snubbed Nominee)
2 Oppenheimer
3: Killers Of The Flower Moon
4: Holdovers
5: Maestro
6: Barbie
My ranking of the 7 I've seen so far:
1) Oppenheimer
2) Anatomy of a Fall
3) Barbie
4) Poor Things
5) Killers of the Flower Moon
6) The Holdovers
7) The Zone of Interest (this is the only one I didn't like)
My rank - still need to see Maestro
1. Killers
2. Oppenheimer
3. Poor Things
4. Anatomy of a Fall
5. Past Lives
6. Zone of Interest
7. American Fiction
8. Barbie
9. The Holdovers
Haven’t watched the video yet, but:
1. Oppenheimer
2. Poor Things
3. Killers of the Flower Moon
4. Anatomy of a Fall
5. Barbie
6. Maestro
7. The Zone of Interest
8. The Holdovers
9. American Fiction
10. Past Lives
All are really great movies
Past Lives is so overrated. In what world would a dude fly 14 hours by himself to hang out w his married woman friend for a day.
Past lives at 10 is criminal
Awesomeeee video, congrats, I feel you give incredible explanations for your choices. Mine:
1- OPPENHEIMER
2 - Poor things
3 - Killers of the flower moon
4 - Anatomy of a fall
5 - Past lives
6 -The Holdovers
7 - American Fiction
8 - Barbie
9 - Maestro
10 - Zone of interest
My ranking would be
9.- Maestro
8.- Barbie
7.- Killers of the Flower Moon
6.- Poor Things
5.- Anatomy of a Fall
4.- The Zone of Interest
3.- The Holdovers
2.- Oppenheimer
1.- Past Lives
(Haven’t seen American Fiction but I expect it to be 8 or 9)
It's most certainly extreme to say this when I know there are worst films made out of the large catalogue of films I've seen but honestly I hated poor things so much I am not afraid to label ot the worst film I've ever seen. Even with dysfunctional films like birdemic, I have seen a film like that multiple times with friends as a joke, poor things I never want to watch again
I was fine with it, but I don’t ever wanna go back to it either. Not the kinda film that lends itself to rewatches imo…
I loved The Holdovers and for the reasons you mentioned; it was my favorite movie in this list. I don’t think it’ll win, but hopefully because it’s an Oscar contender, more people will see it.
My Ranking:
10. Maestro
9. Barbie
8. Anatomy of a Fall
7. Past Lives
6. The Zone of Interest
5. Poor Things
4. American Fiction
3. Killers of the Flower Moon
2. The Holdovers
1. Oppenheimer
My ranking:
10. American Fiction (5/10)

4. The Holdovers (8/10)
3. Past Lives (9/10)
2. Oppenheimer (9/10)
1. Poor Things (10/10)
I've only seen 3 and they're all absolutely phenomenal.
3. The Holdovers(A powerful and entertaining film with some amazing performances)
2. Barbie(A hilarious and creative story with some very strong messaging and excellent comedy)
1. Oppenheimer(This is one of the most hauntingly beautiful stories I've seen in a long while)
I think such masterpieces are not the cup of tea like yours.Differents peoples like different types. My top favourite of 2023 is POOR THINGS.❤️😘🥰
Yeah it seems like one of those movies that if you get it....you probably love it.
But then a bunch of us couldn't get in sync with it
While I enjoyed _Poor Things_ quite a lot, for the reasons you stated, if it DOES somehow win Best Picture (which I don’t think it will), certain groups in the media will be OUTRAGED when they inevitably watch it only because it won.
And let me clarify. I’m not saying that about you. You were very rationale and level-headed. I know others won’t be.
Ngl lmao the way he’s describing the movie even if it wins via that long shot, if I watch it i might lose my mind, is he wrong at all?
@@sakthithanigai5036 I don’t know you, so I don’t know. All I’m thinking about is in 2018 how Ben Shapiro acted when The Shape of Water won.
@@ScottSullivanTV whether you know me or not doesn’t rly matter I’m just asking if what Sean said has any credence
@@sakthithanigai5036 Oh. Okay. You responded to me in this thread, so I didn’t realize you were trying to ask him.
The only one I haven’t seen is Anatomy of a Fall but for the rest:
1) Oppenheimer
2) The Holdovers
3) Poor Things
4) American Fiction
5) Killers of the Flower Moon
6) Past Lives
7) The Zone of Interest
8) Maestro
9) Barbie
Of the BP nominees i’ve seen my ranking was:
Poor things
Past Lives
The zone of Interest
Barbie
American Fiction
Oppenhiemer
Killers of the flower Moon
To be clear, there’s not a single movie on that list I hate or even didn’t like.
1. Oppenheimer A+
2. The Holdovers A
3. Killers Of The Flower Moon A
4. Barbie B+
The only other one I want to see is American Fiction
8. Maestro
7. Barbie
6. Killers of the Flower Moon
5. Past Lives
4. Anatomy of a Fall
3. The Holdovers
2. Oppenheimer
1. The Zone of Interest
I might say that in pretty much every movie there's is a line that says the entire theme of the movie but there are plenty of instances where it has been more subtle.
My ranking:
1. Oppenheimer
2. The Holdovers
3. Anatomy of a Fall
4. Killers of the Flower Moon
5. Past Lives
6. Barbie
7. Poor Things
8. Maestro
9. American Fiction
10. The Zone of Interest
Here's my ranking : 10. The zone of interest 9. Past lives 8. Anatomy of a fall 7. Poor things 6. Maestro 5. Killers 4. The hold 3. Barbie 2. Oppenheimer 1. American fiction
Out of the five I've seen:
1. Killers of the Flower Moon
2. Oppenheimer
3. Anatomy of a Fall
4. The Holdovers
5. The Zone of Interest
Poor Things is such a weird, polarizing and well done film that I can’t fault them for nominating it. I too think it’s very edgy in a way that steps over the lines sometimes but from a craft and talent standard it’s solid.
1. Oppenheimer (10/10)
2. Killers of the flower moon (9/10)
3. Anatomy of a fall (9/10)
4. The holdovers (9/10)
5. Poor things (9/10)
6. Barbie (8,5/10)
7. Maestro (7,5/10)
8. American fiction (7/10)
9. Past lives (6,5/10)
Haven’t seen The zone of interest.
You do a great job really explaining the criticisms of a lot of these movies. Great video!
Thanks so much.
Since I"m more known for franchise films, sometimes I get nervous covering prestige films.
We respect your honesty and we encourage you to watch and review more of these films
6: KOTFM 6/10 (no one shoot me)
5: Oppenheimer 7.5/10
4: The Holdovers 8.25/10
3: Poor Things 8.5/10
2: Barbie 9.25/10
1: Past Lives 9.25/10
We clearly have very different respective tastes in film, but regardless of where we may not line up, I think we can both agree Godzilla Minus One should’ve been nominated, and would’ve if not for the fact that it’s a Godzilla film.
I have not seen Poor Things yet but I’ve heard nothing but praise about it. As you kept describing the plot I just kept saying “how… why is… why isn’t anyone else talking about how problematic that it?!?!?”
Because depiction doesn't equal endorsement

I heard of POOR THINGS and admired the makeup and happy to see Emma stone win an Oscar. However I had no idea what the movie was about. Now that you broke down it’s plot, I’m not surprised why Hollywood loved the movie. I’d never watch that movie as it sounds gross and perverted.
Great list! For me, Barbie deserves a lot higher. I thought it was really good and a very beautiful film with gorgeous scenes with the bright colours
3. Past Lives (B+)
2. Barbie (A-)
1. Oppenheimer (A)

Enjoyed the ranking Sean. Here’s my ranking of the Best Picture nominees (w/ ratings)

2. Poor Things (10/10)
3. Past Lives (10/10)

7. Barbie (7/10)
8. Oppenheimer (6/10)
9. American Fiction (6/10)
10. Maestro (4/10)
I wanted to like American Fiction way more than I did. To me it came across as structured like Spider Man 3, where different storylines kept interrupting each other. If it had just been a 90 minute, well written satire, or just kept the sibling dynamics without the death/dementia subplots, it would have worked way better.
Pretty much my thoughts. There’s so much to love- but also so much that is underdeveloped imo
MASSIVE respect!!!!
so people arent allowed to love poor things ?
Pathetic comment
Thank you!! I couldn't aggree more about Poor Things. A BRILLIANTLY crafted movie thats absolutely disgusting
I totally get why people love the technical aspects and humor....but the concept...yikes!
Agreed
Depiction ≠ Endorsement

Would just score Past Lives slightly higher hehe.
barbie won‘t go down as a classic cause it‘s just not a good film, period
@@sebi17107 I disagree. It is a very well made movie and it could have easily gone so wrong.
