As a huge Godzilla fan ( I watched all 37 movies) I'm so happy Godzilla Minus One is getting the deserved attention and hype and that people see what Godzilla was originally meant to be, the metaphor of the horror of atomic bombs and an anti-war film. Out of all the Godzilla films clearly my favourite film.

The two biggest surprises for me this year was The boy and the Heron and Godzilla Minus One. The Godzilla movies tend to focus on the monster, while minus one focuses on the characters making such a good movie out of the Godzilla can be plucked out of the movie and not hurt the story whatsoever.

Biggest surprise for me was Pixar's Elemental.
Saw trailers and did not think too much of it. Watched it this week with my wife and we were both moved by how relatable the love story is and the quality of the animation!
It is now one of our favorite movies to watch together! That is saying a lot as I am not usually one to gravitate to a romantic comedy or even get emotional over it.

Hot take: the most underrated movie of this year was The Last Voyage of the Demeter. I thought it would just be a generic horror movie, but I was genuinely blown away by how well-made and entertaining it was.

It was well done, but it is pretty generic and forgetful at the end of the day.

    • @joeyk107
      @joeyk107 9 місяців тому +1

@@brianng8350 I'd say that's just because there are SO MANY dracula movies that exist, as well as vampire and horror movies in general.
But I like how Last Voyage changed Dracula's character from what we are used to, making him scarier in a different way.
The other characters also made the movie much better, and there were some great emotional moments (the last scene with Toby comes to mind). I also liked how the characters were different from the typical characters in most dracula movies.
Those are just 2 reasons why I really liked the movie, but I'm probably not going to change your mind. But hey, to each their own

Biggest surprise would easily be Godzilla Minus One. Top 3 of the year for me. D&D was a surprise. I think Totally Killer was a pleasant surprise (thank you Sean for making me aware of its existence). There's also a smaller Tamil film, Chittha, that came out this year. Not a blockbuster, not an action film, it is a drama (and a hard one at that). Did not have it on my radar, and it is easily my favourite Indian film of 2023.
Stand out disappointments would be Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Wish, as well as Animal (sorry to the fans, but it did not float my boat). Obviously every Indian would say Adipurush, but I guess I expected it to suck after that first teaser. I did like The Creator and The Flash, but they were below my expectations. However, my biggest disappointment of 2023, is easily Dunki. Shahrukh Khan in his 'return from hiatus' year. Back to back with Pathaan, and Jawan. This time a comedy-drama, with a message, and with the director of 3 Idiots. Did not expect it to be so mediocre.

    Top 5 Biggest Disappointments:
    5. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania-While a lot of elements of this film are now pretty much meaningless, for the introduction of Kang the Conqueror, this one was definitely disappointing
    4. The Creator-To be very clear, I’m positive on this film, but for how much it was being hyped up for being an original sci-fi epic, this movie certainly let me down as it was essentially a bunch of elements of previous sci-fi projects thrown together to make The Creator
    3. Napoleon-On technical levels, this is a well made movie, which made for a decent movie but when it came to the story, characters, and themes, there wasn’t an actual exploration of who Napoleon Bonaparte was, which was rather disappointing
    2. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny-While it’s a good enough closure to the Indiana Jones franchise and character, it lacks the classic movie making of what makes the original trilogy special, and takes Indy to emotional places I think I could’ve done without
    1. The Flash-Despite enjoying this movie both times I watched it in theaters, this movie has aged rather poorly for me because of how it executes multiple of its ideas, its terrible CGI, the way the story plays out, and especially how hollow Barry’s journey is by the time the movie wraps up

    Most disappointing for me:
Indiana Jones and The Dial of The Destiny, Napoleon, Scream VI, Quantumania, The Creator (it’s not bad, but I bought into the massive hype most were creating and it didn’t work out for the best)
My picks for hidden gems: Suzume, The First Slam Dunk, Past Lives, Blue Giant
I won’t say Minus One was surprising for me because I knew it was gonna be great, and I won’t say Wish was disappointing cause I already knew I wasn’t gonna be big on it personally

(Spoilers for Godzilla minus one in this comment)
My biggest disappointment: Napoleon, you have one of greatest directors teaming up with his fellow coworker who’s a Oscar award winning actor in Joaquin Phoenix who is playing one of the greatest war generals in history and it just seemed bland. This movie should’ve been much more action packed and less romantically focused than what it was making the film messy and a complete head scratcher.
Most surprising: Godzilla minus one. I was never too fond of the other Godzilla movies but I saw this one because I was hearing good things about so I watched it with my aunt and uncle and I was blown away. From start to finish I was immediately captured by the main character and his emotional journey from when he first survives the Godzilla attack to him falling in love with a girl he randomly met because she was struggling to take care of a random baby she had to take care of. Godzilla was fantastic and the score they had playing in the final fight scene is honestly iconic as I’ll never forget that. Then to put the icing on the cake, the plot twist at the end that reveals the main character’s girlfriend/wife never actually died had me in complete shock and just blew we away with how everything was perfect as my only complaint was that the movie unfortunately ended. Was my 3rd favorite film of 2023 and easily the one that surprised me the most.

For Gran Turismo, the plot was just so bizarre that it’s enough to check out but it gave a good story, good acting and when we got to the racing scenes, I was always on the edge of my seat.

For Dungeon and Dragons, I just thought it was better than I expected.
Some other movies I was surprised by…
The Super Mario Bros Movie- everyone thought this would be a flop but instead we got one of the highest grossing movies of 2023 so it’s clear the team making this movie put a lot of work into it.
Nimona- seriously how did this movie not get into theatres? It’s so good it should’ve been on the big screen.
Dumb Money- I feel like this film just doesn’t get talked about enough. While not mind blowing new, it’s still really good.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes- it manages to add more to both the world of Hunger Games and to the character of Snow.

Quick disappointing mention: Quantumania (I still enjoyed it but it could’ve been better)

Most surprising flicks for me were Dungeons and Dragons, Mutant Mayhem, and Fast X.
D & D was legit great. Really fun family movie with heart. Really Recommend it.
Did not expect Mutant Mayhem to be this good. That ending where people know about their existence was a great surprise too. Well executed.
Fast X was way more enjoyable than F9. John Cena was way better in Fast X than F9😂. And Jason Momoa was really fun.

I don’t have any hidden gems, so I’ll just do the other categories
    Disappointments:
*Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.* - I was so hyped for this one because I’m a big MCU fan and the trailers made it look like a high stakes, action-packed introduction to Kang. Unfortunately it wasn’t really that. I still liked it a lot more than most people, and the final fight was super intense, but it didn’t meet my expectations.
*Wish*: It was the 100th anniversary Disney movie but it was just a cringey mess and it was hard to sit through. It was also kinda generic and the songs were mid.
    Biggest Surprises:
*TMNT: Mutant Mayhem* - I really wasn’t expecting much out of this one because the premise just didn’t sound promising, but it’s a really solid movie and is very heartwarming and entertaining.
*Elemental:* I really didn’t care to see this one at first and I didn’t even see it until it came on Disney Plus, but it was actually really fun and super heartwarming. The animation also blew me away.
*Diary of a Wimpy Kid Christmas: Cabin Fever* - The first two animated wimpy kid movies were pretty awful, so my expectations were as low as Earths core for this one. But it was actually decent. Compared to the first two, it’s a massive improvement and it’s a fresh story since there’s never been a Cabin Fever adaptation.
*Five Nights at Freddy’s:* I’m not the HUGEST FNAF fan, but I definitely know most of the lore and references and stuff. My expectations were neutral since I heard the reviews were mediocre, but I throughly enjoyed FNAF. I understood all the references which made the experience 1000x more enjoyable, and all around it was just really entertaining for me.

@@noobmasterruben5167 felt like nothing happened throughout the movie, I was left underwhelmed by the entire thing. Normally I’m ok with a 2 part movie (example being Mission Impossible) but this one didn’t work because the ending didn’t leave me satisfied, the whole movie felt like one very long 1st Act, and when done right it can workout incredibly well but for this it just didn’t work out for me. It left me wanting more but not in a good way.
What sucks is that first movie is my favourite animated movie of all time and I desperately wanted to love this movie.

I don't really have any hidden gem movies here, so I'll just cut to the biggest disappointments
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The only thing I'll give it praise for is Jonathan Majors' portrayal as Kang the Conqueror! He felt really threatening and you could just feel his presence coming. It's a shame with what happened recently. Also I was pleasantly surprised with the twist they made with MODOK. Other than that, they just kept on dragging the jokes out for too long, the story was completely wasted, and... that's it.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. While not as bad as Crystal Skull, it just didn't live up to the magic and legacy of the first three movies.
    Most Surprising Films.
Elemental. I had no interest in watching this movie. But I gave in and gave it a try and... I really liked it. It surprised me a whole lot.
Five Nights at Freddy's. Now I would say I had no intention on watching it, because I don't like horror movies, but the trailers kept on pulling me in and so, I watched it, and I gotta say. While it's not perfect, I still had fun.
Migration. Sinilar thing with FNAF. My grandpa normally convinces me to watch Illumination movies with him, and it was a really fun movie!

  • @crko34

    My picks
Most dissapointing: -Quantumania (They removed all the charm of the first two movies and replaced it with the most bland and generic mcu stuff. I could forgive it if the movie had some stakes at the end. Instead, Kang got beaten up by ants)
-Five night's at Freddy's (Instead of delivering scares and kills, the movie delivered 100 minutes of exposition and dreams)
    - Indiana Jones (I can't believe they made such a forgetable Indy movie. I forgot about the movie immediately after watching it)
    Most surprising:
    - Saw X (I had zero anticipation for the movie because if franchise's poor track record. It ended up being one of the coolest horror movies of the lat few years)
    - John Wick 4 (I liked the first 3 movies but nothing besides the action stood out to me. The plot and the characters were pretty generic. This one however had one of the most memorable and coolest supporting characters of the year. It really elevated the movie and it's one of my favourites of the year)
