  • Is Fanchen's Rush E mediocre? Spoiler alert: no, but let's talk about why.
Rush E is one of the internet's latest hot topics, but how does Fanchen go about playing this arrangement and how does he make it musical? And beyond that, what can you take from this technical performance and implement it into your own?
Big ups to ‪@Fanchen‬ and his playing and for sending me the sheets! Go listen to his original performance and support the video: • Guy thinks I can't pla...

Hell yes, we needed this! Great analyzes man!
In the whole meme debate I think many people overlooked just how good and polished Fanchen's performance actually is from a musically point of view. I saw many people comment how there are better pianists, harder pieces etc. without realizing that that's not what this was all about, you can't really compare two pianists when they play different pieces. In fact this wasn't even about showing who is the better pianist or flexing some very hard and technically demanding piece. This was about showing how you can take one piece, one arrangement (although he of course did make some changes) and play it in such a way that it draws a picture in the listeners head, emphasizing each note in order to produce something that is truly musically. This was about showing what sets a performance that is good or even great apart form one that is mediocre.

I think the reason why everyone thought Fanchen was being offensive because everyone was praising the guy in the video, seeing a person who’s not praising like everyone else feels out of place and weird, especially if you’re not a piano professional, you think that guy is really good and impressive and the person saying otherwise is just mean. I have brother like Fanchen, and it sucks arguing with him. He's too blunt and literally has high standards.
I once taught him to cook, but he didn't want to listen to me. He told me that I was a too-beginner for me teaching him. Honestly, it hurt my feelings, but I do admit I'm a beginner. It's much better if a professional could teach him so he wouldn't waste time at my not-well-polished skills and instead take advices from those are professional who are knowledgeable and experienced.
Efficiently is everything in his life. He does not waste time and suck all the advices and criticism from the professional and hear nothing from his peers. It is his greatest strength, but also can be his downfall.
People may seem see my brother as an arrogant person. But as his sibling, I always see him the most insecure and at the same time most confident person ever.

RE playing the full 'unplayable' version:
Looking through the most difficult part, it would be playable with 21 pianists and 11 grand pianos. The 4 pianists playing the melody share one piano, the 8 pianists playing the constant repeated notes section all share one piano, and the other 9 pianists have a piano each as they need to use a whole piano. One of the pianists however must be allowed an engine to play with - probably 2 blocks of wood one strapped to each hand, one 9 keys wide, the other capable of playing all the keys at once.

Duly note at 13:56 that required pressure along the length of the keys is due to how close the pivot point is on most digital pianos and keyboards. This is a significantly less, if at all, noticeable problem on acoustic pianos, particularly grands, or keyboards incorporating acoustic piano action.

Great. I love the analysis. I play the piano for over 28 years, but since it stayed just a hobby and I usually only play by heart and memory, I haven't yet attempted Rush E. It's awe inspiring to see such a more than mediocre, I'd even dare say impressive, performance from fenchen and SMB (they have a two-player version).
Also your analysis is on point and even made me understand certain techniques, that I apprently already have been using, but didn't know how/why (it just felt natural whenever I used them - e.g. playing the same note with different fingers if playing it with just one is not fast enough).

I don't think he's talking about the music theory, I think he's talking about the techniques what Ranchen used. I'm not a a pianist or something, so I'm not sure, but yes.
Also the musicality, the way he delivered Rush E. The thing is Rush E is just literally a meme, but Ranchen made his own interpretation or version of Rush E. Ranchen is a well-trained and talented musician, he made Rush E from a meme to classic music, that is pleasing to the ears.
There's no music theory in this vid aha, this is more technicality and musicality. I think.

The reason why the majority went after Fanchen is because the majority is neither talented nor hardworking nor taught in behaving accordingly online.
Saying that you know something is great or mediocre in a field you have no mastery of is the norm online, yet it's neither valuable nor legitimate. Taking offense that someone who does have such mastery, build upon both skills and hard work is in his place to rate things differently than you are is the actual arrogance. If you suck at something, you have the right to shut it when competent people are talking and... no, nothing more. Shut it. If you want a sit at the big boy's table, you have to earn it. Fanchen certainly did.

    definition of arrogant:
having or revealing an exaggerated sense of one's own importance or abilities
    definition of confident:
sure of oneself or ones abilities
Fanchen is confident, not arrogant, he defers to piano players better than him and doesnt pretend to be better. The 4 pianists playing the melody share one piano, the 8 pianists playing the constant repeated notes section all share one piano, and the other 9 pianists have a piano each as they need to use a whole piano. The response itself we can call criticism, not at all constructive, but the way it was worded sounded like Fanchen was being an asshole for the sake of being an asshole regardless of his intentions.
