  • In this video I will show you how to connect or setup Home Kit (Home App + Siri) with OpenHAB 2. I will be connecting my Home app on my iphone and ipad to OpenHAB 2 but the same process can be used for other ios devices. We will be able to control openhab 2 with siri and the Home App! Siri will also control my sprinkler system and lights! All of this is going to be possible because we will be using the homekit integration binding in openhab 2.

    Great video, but why not setting up homkit without OpenHAB from the start? Does it have any advantages?

    Thanks for the video! I'm so glad someone is finally making videos on openHAB2. Forums online are okay for troubleshooting but as someone who is new to home automation how to videos make it so much easier. Finally got HomeKit to cooperate thanks to this video!

    A lot of things has been changed since 2017. Today all that I need to connect openhab system to Apple home app is Openhab server and apple device ? Am I correct ? Must I download some other software to connect to Openhab Server (for instance Homebridgre or something else) ?

    Is there a way to make an alias of some sort to make HomeKit open and close the garage doors? Kind of like the dummy item you made but can translate 100% to be open and 0% to be closed.

    Hi Matt, thanks a lot for your awesome video's! I followed every step you describe but when I trie to add OpenHab in the home app it's not visible at all. Any ideas what the problem might be?

      Yeah I did. Still didn't work. So then I uninstalled the binding, restarted the pi, reinstalled the binding, uninstalled the home app, walked through every step again. Still no success :'(

      To keep it simple I only added the [ "Switchable" ] tag to one of the dummy switches in my items file. But OH is still not appearing. Maybe the add-on has some settings in other config files too. Or maybe it's in conflict with my Philips Hues. I'll try some other approaches, when I succeed I'll let you know. Thanks anyway!

    Looks like I am about 5 years behind here and maybe things have changed. I'm new to openHAB and wondering if this can also be used in reverse to control HomeKit devices? i.e. use OpenHAB to control a device which works with HomeKit but does not have its own API or binding. Specific use case is Velux (300) Active window blinds. No binding or API for this. Works with HomeKit and also Google Home. Thanks!

    Hi Matt, BEFORE adding [ "Switchable" ] to the item: (Switch DEMOSW "Demo Switch"), Basic UI and Classic UI will show friendly name with the on/off switch. AFTER adding [ 'Switchable" ] (Switch DEMOSW "Demo Switch" [ “Switchable” ]), all UI's will show the Variable DEMOSW with the on/off switch. Any idea why? Thanks in advance!

    Hi there, well done for this very good publishing and sharing.
    I have few questions:
    -. Did you manage to control volume and controls of Chromecast using Siri? If so, can you share the method or config?
    -. Is it possible to pass variables to openhab using Siri, for example you ask her to set a motor speed to a certain speed like 10 or any other value or ask her to set the motor speed to fast, slow or normal strings?

    • @yousafsyed3109
      @yousafsyed3109 7 років тому

      Alexander Rincon yes it require dedicated device. Openhab is opensource replacement for google home and other devices like that but ofcourse you have to install it on some computer. I recommend rpi 3 since its cheap and low power consumption. Rpi3 has wifi and bluetooth you can get a used for very less.

      MK-SmartHouse hi Matt thanks for you reply, yes I did! I forgot about it and started to learn new stuff... today I decided to give it another try and when I try to add device... I saw 2 openhab, ( openhab and openhab(2) ) so this time i selected the one without the (2) and it worked!!! I have another question... don't know if you can help me... I'm
      Using openhabian 2.1 I'm trying to control the gpio but without any luck... any advice?? Been reading everywhere but know... I'm just learning about this... I got working my wemo switch and Siri but can get the gpio to turn on a single LED...

    I’m new to OH2 and HomeKit for that matter. I have some z-wave switches that I’m able to get configured in Paper UI, but I can’t seem to get them to work with HK. I created a .items file and added the tags, but when I add openHAB to the iOS Home app, all it does is add the openHAB accessory and stop and I can’t do anything with it. It doesn’t take me through the other items. What am I missing? Should I not configure my z-wave items through Paper UI first and leave it all to manual entry? I can’t seem to figure it out. I’m running OH2 on Win10, btw.

    • @MKSmartHouse
      @MKSmartHouse  7 років тому

      +Jon Fuller for home kit to work you have to create the items in the items file and add tags, that is the only way ik

    • @13sqmaddog
      @13sqmaddog 7 років тому

      MK-SmartHouse Thx for the quick reply. I didn’t see bindings for some of your switch items in the .items file in your video. Do I not need to set bindings up for them to work with HomeKit?

    • @MKSmartHouse
      @MKSmartHouse  7 років тому

      +Jon Fuller those switch items are Belkin wemo devices that I configured those in the paper ui, so I am simply forwarding the commands.

      MK-SmartHouse I removed all my items and things and went step by step through your setup videos and I got it working with HomeKit! Thank you so much for providing all this info! Don’t know how I would have figured it out without you!

    • @crabsodyinblue

      found it? openhab (web)server uses port 8080, so if you have OH2 running on a mac, and made sure no other webservers use 8080, just go to :8080 in a browser to get to the GUI.. otherwise open terminal on mac and find the config dir: 'cd $OPENHAB_CONF'

      I Have Openhab 2.0.0 on a windows server based machine with the firewall etc disable. and on the iPhone I'm currently running iOS 10.3.2. I also tried to remove my home and clear homekit pairings on openhab with the command "smarthome:homekit clearPairings" and start again but that didn't work, the home app still says that openhab is not supported yet by the home app :(

      I Have found that if you are running openHAB on a Windows machine, You have to put all the items that you want to control through HomeKit in the beginning of your items file and you should be good to go :) it's looks like OpenHAB on windows is a little bit different than the raspberry version

    Many thanks Matt for the great tutorials you've made! They are very useful and I have just achieved my first home automation project largely inspired by yours and used many of your Arduino sketches! Good stuff! I did obviously many mistakes but at same time it was a great learning process and nothing I couldn't eventually overcome. It feels so great when it works :) I'd have one question, I am running Openhab2 on a RPI 3 and noticed that Home Kit sometimes hangs. Looking at the log (var/log/openhab2) I saw that Home Kit is creating a Java exception and loses connection with Openhab. I was wondering if you were running into the same issue. I've looked at community forums and several people are having the same issue but couldn't find any solution. I've obviously checked that I am running Java 8 and not 9. Cheers
