Hiding the tool in the pouch lining, in my opinion, breaks the "no external tools" rule because that is, by definition, an external tool. Anything that is not contained within the puzzle itself is considered "external" (no the key doesn't count as that is a functional part of the puzzle). As someone else pointed out, that tool is small enough to fit within the key, and some clever uses of magnets and springs could keep the tool hidden in the key until some specific condition is met and the tool is released.
4:02 that does like manufacturing defect. When drilling, metal shavings can build up on the drill and scratch circular patterns into the material. If it was done by the key, it would have been a semi-circle, not a full circle.
I agree with you about the hidden tool. Who would ever think to look in the packaging for a tool? "No external tools" to me means you'll find what you need along the way during the solving process. If there was maybe a written clue that would lead you to check the bag, that would be OK.

This puzzle took me (literally) *months* to solve... I can't believe you solved it without finding the tool that was hidden in the bag! 🙂 I agree with your disappointment at that aspect of the puzzle.
Loki is one of my most hated puzzles because of the hidden tool. Its not a puzzle at that point. Im glad you managed to solve it in a reasonable time dispite it!

He did a video on this puzzle lock two years ago. See video 1453. It’s a 20 minute video, unusual for LOL. Most of his videos with real locks are only a couple of minutes.

Loki was the trickster of the Gods, so if makes sense they did something that tricky with that tool. It’s in character for sure.
If the tool is just in the top of the pouch and so small like that you could easily lose it and never know it was part of the puzzle at all
