    Note that since we want to have a little cloth left over it can be 2 harvests before they start making it, since the first harvest may not have the resources required to make everything + have stuff left over. You can also have the farmer process additional plants at that stage since storing the extra pigtails/reeds isn't really needed like it is for thread/cloth.

    It is possible to set conditions for making clothing to make it produced at need. BUT it will lead to a lot of owned clothing in cabinets. Just set conditions like this: make 1 hood when hoods available less then 1 and cloth available more than 10. It will make 1 new hood every time someone takes the last hood from stockpile.

    Automation has become a stable in my fortresses for such multistep products. You have less to worry about and even less cancelation warnings. I use it on drinks to keep an acceptable level.

    • @GeneralLudwigSteiner
      @GeneralLudwigSteiner 2 роки тому +2

      You basicly have to use it for everything to keep it at an acceptable level and not run out with, same goes for fuel of any kind (as long as you dont have magma set up) cooking, cloth, smelting, crafts and jewels. As soon as you set it up properly you are good to go and dont have to check in manually. I even automate bed/door/table production so I always have them on hand.

      @@GeneralLudwigSteiner How do you automate it without getting the cancel orders? I tried with food and stuff, but it kept giving the cancel orders even after putting in the conditions to do it if they had a certain amount of unrotten food to use

      @@GeneralLudwigSteiner Of course I should automate furniture to keep basic stock! Thank you for the advice. Sometimes, you are so used to manual labour you miss the solution to your most basic Problems.

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  2 роки тому +5

      @Red food is a bit more complex as it is based on stacks of ingredients. Like for lavish meals it needs 4 stacks, so unrotten food > 4 could be true for just one stack of 4 celery leading to a cancellation.
      It also ignores restricted items (I think) so like the Rope Reed you're waiting to get processed counts towards whether the food order is triggered.
      What I do instead is order it based on the meals being less than what I need for the following 1-2 seasons. I'll get spammed of they can't finish it, but if they can't finish it that's potentially a big problem and that's useful spam.

    I love your guides, it is super helpful! Most of the vids I've found so far do not contain enough details. Your tips are valuable. What's missing though is to actually see you doing these stuff, for example I'm not familiar with clothing workshops, so I wasn't sure in which one you actually find these options. Getting there slowly in more advanced video, step by step, with dyeinig as well, would be super helpful. See you on twitch :)

    For whatever reason, my dwarves do not know how to make robes. They can make ropes, and they can make dresses, and the wiki says something about dress robes, but alas, I have no robes available. Edit: Also, no shirt. I have tunic though.

    • @FurtherReadingTV

      Yeah some clothes may not be known by your civilisation. Using coats and tunics can work as alternatives to robes and shirts.

    I've been automating stuff for a while now and thought: "Meh, probably nothing new, but lets check anyway."
    TIL: You can have work orders queued to start one after another.
    That might help with some I'm having trouble finding the proper item conditions for.
    As long as the starting order has proper conditions, I can make the rest just follow.
    Problem currently is lye production. Can't get it to stop once I have a bit of lye in a pot. It goes on forever (as long as I have ash).
    Um yeah: Could you show some other automations?
    Soap making (from start to finish) might be nice.
    I also have trouble to automatically restock on gypsum powder. The work order for that goes on forever as well, as I can't find the proper [have less than x bags with gypsum powder lying around].

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  2 роки тому +2

      You can try saying not to make ash if you have some amount of Lye, which should then cause the Lye to stop as the Ash would be used up (assuming you also aren't running something like clear glass or pottery which might require ash too). I had some weirdness though in my last fort where I felt they weren't making Lye as often as they could. I want to pay a bit closer attention to my soap flow in my newest fort to figure out if maybe I got the orders mixed up or something before I make a soap video.

    • @dkSilo
      @dkSilo 2 роки тому +1

      @@FurtherReadingTV Figuring the amount of lye I have is in fact the problem.

    My only issue with making work orders for only 1 object is then it's the opposite problem of getting a "job canceled" spam, you get a"job completed" spam.

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  2 роки тому +5

      This is a starter farm where you only make stuff once per harvest. If you get to the point where you're making stuff fast enough that it is spammy then you just update the orders to match.

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  2 роки тому +4

      This is something I touched on in one of my farming videos - they are harder to automate as you can't have a "if unsheared/unmilked animals at least x" requirement. I recommended just adding the workshop orders every now and again, while someone in the comments recommended keeping a count of shearable/milkable animals and having orders to do that many every month/year.

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  2 роки тому +2

      Somewhat, yes. The best way I've found is to make a monthly/yearly job to milk/shear x animals where x is the amount of animals that can be miked/sheared. You'll need to keep a count of your animals to manually update the order every now and again but that's it.

  • @skabba

    Nice video. How would you go about making sure your dwaves use non-worn-out clothing? AFAIK there is no way to automate "make 1 trousers if there are less than 5 non-worn-out trousers in stock". How have long time players dealt with that?

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  2 роки тому +2

      Your Dwarves will automatically replace worn out clothes if they can find some. As for removing, I think that they will go to a standard quality only stockpile once ruined so you could have one that is set up for atom smashing but I'm not sure - I usually just sell them to traders.

    • @ShattForte
      @ShattForte 2 роки тому +3

      Dwarves automatically replace worn out clothing. Dwarves should keep their worn out clothes in their bedroom cabinet/chest, but in my experience they'll also just pick up new clothes and change them right there, tossing their old clothes on the ground. Because they are owned clothing, other dwarves won't touch them.
      But, one thing I do is whenever the trade caravan comes around, I'll sort through all the clothes and trade away any clothes that have an x, X or XX tag on them (example: xpig tail trousersx). Good way to make money with garbage!

    • @skabba
      @skabba 2 роки тому

      @@ShattForte @FurtherReading yes selling them is what I do too. However it is very cumbersome to have to furiously click all clothes with an X. It would be great to have them filtered so all worn clothing put in bins, and selled with a couple clicks.
      So I guess you just manually order cloth replacements for all your dwarves every year?

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  2 роки тому +2

      @@skabba I'm using the system in the video to always make clothes when possible. One thing you could try is to make a stockpile that takes anything above standard and have it fed from another clothes stockpile - your clothier should level up pretty quickly so most of what comes out should be higher than standard. The use a quantum stockpile on the good clothes stockpile and bins on the trash clothes stockpile eventually every clothes bin is gonna have trash in it.

  • @adlhbgreqk
    @adlhbgreqk 2 роки тому

    Thanks again for the best guides! I wonder if 10 orders to make 1 item takes more effort for the manager than 1 order of 10 items? will be the workflow effective enough?

    • @FurtherReadingTV
      @FurtherReadingTV  2 роки тому

      Having more items per order would be more efficient, but only if you have the cloth. The point of this is that they make one entire set every harvest. Once you're big enough to either have a more robust farm or just buy cloth in bulk from traders then it's time to revisit the workflows.
      Even then, a legendary organiser can mow through the checks pretty fast so by the time it could matter it might be hardly enough to make your experienced manager sweat.
