He still sounds like a baby here. Man, to be a fly on the wall during those sessions, my favorite Metallica album.
You probably wouldn't know what was going on, just be scared of spiders and shit.
@@jackenglish1979 🤣🤣🤣 good
Man could sing his voice out tho
@@jackenglish1979 That's a risk I'm willing to take.
@@jackenglish1979 Clever. 😂
To hear how young and innocent James sounded here... and then to listen to that album.... it's amazing to me how four punk teenagers put together such a mature masterpiece. This is a perfect example of just how damn good James and Lars were/are composing songs together.
It was more like James writing lyrics and riffs,Lars do the arrangement,Cliff fixing the problematic parts,Kirk coming up with ideas and writing solos.
@@Csetnikke not just solos, Kirk is way overlooked when it comes to writing riffs. he wrote most of the Metallicas best thrashy riffs.
And Mustaine telepathicly writing riffs
Accually, James like 7 years ago said in some interview that at that time (what’s on the video) is when he was really toxic and agressive person
You mean they went through Dave's riff tapes.
Their best album. Simply flawless.
Mop?
@@darthmavy1142 The first 3 albums were all masterpieces. Not a single bad song, but RTL will always be my favorite.
@@n3Cr0ManCeD kill ‘em all has some very meh songs
Bass needed to be up, couldn't hear it on ktulu, or fight fire with fire until the internet came along
It's a great album, but Master Of Puppets is better.
They completely changed the game. Best band ever (80’s)
James was still a kid back then to produce that kind of music and play the way they did in the 80s it's amazing been a loyal metallica fan since then 👏
Ride ended out being the more polished album although a much darker production with the mid scoop guitars and less acoustic drum sound. Kill em all still had an old school rockin 70s flavour but faster whereas Ride the Lighting was a much more epic and doomy sound which really influenced the thrash metal guitar sound of the 80s and into the 90s with albums like Sepultura Arise etc
@@Taylor.Dude. I still love listening to it the guitar really cuts whereas the ride guitar is completely different with no mids. I think Kirk said that all they had on Kill Em All was one of those Boss distortion pedals, the old orange one
@@Mike-vq1fm Ride the Lighting had a lot of mids in the mix, and the amps were boosted with TS-9s.
@@TrainsNStuffOn Kill Em All James Used a Proco Rat pedal into a Marshall and Kirk used a Boss Super Distortion into a Marshall. This information came from a Metallica interview in 2008 Guitar World magazine. You're probably thinking of live shows where Kirk used a TS
@@Mike-vq1fm oh I misread I thought you were talking about RTL. With RTL, James did use a TS-9 to get closer to the sound of his older modded Marshall that was stolen. But yeah in Kill Em All he did use a RAT pedal.
@@TrainsNStuff yeah cool I know Kirk said he has always used a TS9 but on Kill Em All they hardly had any money or gear. I played metal but never boosted my signal, I had Bill Lawrence pickups straight into 5150. I wonder if on Load and Reload they were still boosting or just straight into the Mesa Rectifiers. Load/Reload sounds like all amp to me
Awesome to hear stuff like this for the first time! James is so young haha. Wished someone would have thought to film the making of RTL and MOP
Who knows, they may have recorded some of it and they have it looked up behind 5’ steel doors with armed guards just waiting for the day when they’ll surprise all the fans with it 🤤
Remember that they were a very small, niché band back then
@@BarryMcDikkon we can only hope and pray! 😇
There's some small snippets on UA-cam of the Ride the Lightning recording sessions but it's very brief.
@@russkate88 I'm gonna have to look those up
He sounds like a mix of Kirk and Lars
"kill 'em all was a bit too polished" sounded exactly like Lars
@@cornfilms3795 yes thats right
@@cornfilms3795 It's easy to pick up mannerisms when 24/7 with a bunch of the same people
@@FreeTheJambon Indeed
They were simply the best band of my generation period
Thank you for sharing rare clip .Brings back good such memories.
I love KEA, but James must be the only person to have ever describe it as ‘too polished’.
“Kill em all was a little too polished” LMAOOO
Kea did have a better dynamic range.
Hah. Indeed. Polished certainly isn't the word I would use. Rife was far more professional in sound
Cliff would smoke a joint and drink a few elephant beers before recording. 🌿💨🐘🍺
That sounds pretty much like Cliff 😂
How else should one record?
Kill em all was too polished!? Wow, interesting to hear his perspective so early on.
When you're in a ´you know´ contest and see james hetfield walk in: 👁👄👁
lmaooo
I love that album
fun to hear this stuff
Nice to hear it!
probably their best sounding album in my opinion. Phantom Lord could of been on it
Yeah !!
Ride the lightning was my entry into Metallica .. My favourite also 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Ride is the best ever, I follow it up with hardwired to self destruct, then justice, then puppets, then KIA, then LOAD/RELOAD, then the black album.
@@davidstockdale4187 Wat
@@hahnz1 thats how I personally rste my favorite metallica albums. I forgot death Magnetic which I would place before the black album.
@@davidstockdale4187 Hardwired in front of Justice and Puppets? Fair enough dude.
Same here 🤘🍻
Love how he refers to kill em all as polished 🤣
tbh the guitar tone is alot cleaner than on rtl
@@Bixxykill em all has my favorite metallica tone. i wish they would've used more cleaner tones with more high end crunch as opposed to the deeper chunky sound of rtl and mop. this is one reason i prefer the megadeth sound
@@somb206 i get that
I love the megadeth sound especially peace sells and killing is my business because the bass is so audible and awesome on those records
@@somb206 Interesting, thats how good metallica is, never hoped to hear someone saying what you said about their first CD.
To me AJFA has the best guitar tone, shame for the bass though...
@@Bixxy production wise it’s reasonable, I remember an interview with Kirk where he said they were on major time constraints and as a result there’s a fair amount of sloppy solo work because he just didn’t have time to do take after take
My second favorite record
That's why they recorded album there 😊
Back when nothing could touch Metallica 🤘🏼
👍🤘
James: It's a real good sound
Me: Yeah..That album of yours, ''Ride The Reverb''
Y'know I think this interview y'know, it's pretty good y'know.
He forgot to say, "Yea"...
This is the "Yaknow" era...
Ride is the best album for me
So innocent and untouched by Bob Rock.
Awwww. Rock-a-bye, Sweet Baby James.
would be cool to have infos on the interview itself.. it's cool though
My love Metallica🤘🤘🤘🤘🎼🎸
i would like some audio or vid where james record some vocals on this album or master of puppets
I think the reason their early albums are masterpieces is because there’s no camera sticking up their ass the whole time. Knowing you’re being filmed probably prevents a lot of experimentation.
There are small snippets of them at the mixing desk in the Lightning sessions.
rip cliff burton 🤘🤘
Jason newsted 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
The only issue I had with Ride the Lightning was that the kick drums were too soft and Lars did awesome double kick drumming on that album.
Good luck to them hope it turns out ok
King James - Thrash Metal God 🤘🤘
James still says ya know ya know lol.
"Kill em All was a bit too polished" I burst out laughing
Love how he gave Dave Mustain credit for song writing without mentioning his name.
when? I missed it
@@andrijasentic9702 comment about the Four horsemen , it a Mustaine song pretty much and I know co wrote some what.
His voice sounds like a radio DJ now and back then, it sounds like Lars. 🤣
heard it before
mans said y'know 13 times in a minute
Easily their best
If they were planning to sound rougher than kill em all they may as well have recorded on a boombox.
"Kill Em All was a bit too polished"?? James was saying "You know" back then too lol. I can't get enough of finding out things about RTL by fav album ⚡
If I just had 1 penny for every time James has said "you know" during his lifetime, I might would be a multi million-heir.
Funny because Kill em all is way more raw sounding than RTL
Songs faster than motor breath, fight fire with fire. Yeah that one will give me carpel tunnel syndrome
James going on a "you know" athon
He sounded super nervous. I get it.
Think about it. James 21, Kirk 21, Lars 20 and Cliff 22 years old.
James was 20
"3 real fast songs" I wonder what the third song was, and whether they ended up recording it for MOP
fight fire, trapped under ice, creeping death
@@darioalaniz-iniguez8750 that's what I thought too but Fight Fire isn't that fast (compared to the other two)
@@andrehb Fight fire is the fastest song on the album..?
@@darioalaniz-iniguez8750 IKR like wtf lol. Fight fire is a thrashy mofo.
You know
Is that hetfield or Lars ulrich
question is now: do we know?
faster than motorbreath? NO WAY HAA!!!!
Ya know
You know...
Kill 'Em All was...polished?
sounds like Lars almost but as he spoke longer I heard it was definitely james
Interesting to hear him be so poorly-spoken. Even with early albums he was good at writing lyrics.
The homie was like 22 23 here. We can forgive him for not being so articulate.
@@ramon2008 20 - 21
He was 20
Guys guys... Ride is a perfect album ok but so is kill em all, master of puppets and justice... However puppets is the best 🙌
Ya know...
LOL. James states that "Kill em All" was more polished?
ykno ykno ykno ykno like like ykno
He sounds Lars with an American accent
"Kill 'em all was too polished" 😄
Kill ‘Em All was a bit too polished?
I thought he was Lars when he started talking lmao
I thought he was Lars for a second damn
"Kill Em All was a bit too polished"
Sounds more like Lars honestly 🤔🥁
So... more of Dave's riffs and less of mine.
Stop it with that bs Dave co wrote 2 songs out of 8 on RTL. Stop it with giving Dave WAAAYYYYY too much credit. If you hate Metallica so much why are you watching videos about them? Metallica live rent free in all you megadeth fanboys heads just like they did Dave's for 30+ years.
@@midnight347 false
2 Riffs on the whole album which contains almost 50 riffs
@@deletedhero5579 yes, but the first two albums are mostly Dave's style of writing riffs.
So I can write a song that's sounds just like Holy Wars and change a few notes or rythems and it would be wrong to say Megadeth was an influence on the song?
He sounds a bit like Lars here. First i thought it´s even Lars
Thats Lars
Kill 'Em All was too polished and Ride The Lightning too Rough? Ride the Lighting had way better production values than Kill 'Em All.
Sounds more like Lars.
Kill em All was ‘too polished’??!! 😂
Is it just me or does that sound much more like Lars?
The only real Metallica album had cliff on bass…period.
doesn't even sound like him, so young... lol
Thats Lars not James. I can hear his accent here & there.
That's Lars' voice.
