  • In today's video, we explore six different cases of "Third Man Syndrome", sometimes called the "Third Man Factor". We cover testimonies from Sir Ernest Shackleton, Charles Lindbergh, Joshua Slocum, and others.
Have you encountered a "Third Man" before? If so, I'd love to read your story in the comments.

I have experienced 3rd man syndrome while skydiving in freefall multiple times. When I perceive that I am in trouble, a calm voice, that I can literally hear, will say something like, "DO THIS NOW!" What the "this" is, I already know. The last time I heard the voice, I couldn't find my pilot chute. I panicked, scrambled for it, grabbed for it 3 times, forgot what to do next, and thought that I would die. Then the voice was louder than it had ever been, and yelled with authority, "NO! YOU WILL FIND IT!" I instantly felt the most calm I have ever felt in my entire life, searched for it, and deployed it. That whole experience lasted 3 seconds (I have it on video). It's not my inner monologue. Its not my thoughts. Its a literal voice.

I've experienced the voice too in a dangerous experience. The voice I heard said *"do this now!"* (I knew what it meant)
And I swear the voice wasn't mine or anybody I knew. When I heard it I didn't recognize it, ever. If it was a person, it was someone I hadn't met before. Also, it was clear as a bell, like the person was sitting right next to me.
Now, after the experience I remember thinking "why hadn't it been my mom or grandma?" (Both had passed away) "why hadn't the voice been me?" (I'm 100% sure the voice wasn't mine)
So anyways all I can think of is the voice was someone else's. The closest I could describe it, it was a motherly figure, very warm and nice like Mary (the religious figure). Like a grandma I never knew I had. The voice was older than me but no older than 50.

I've felt the same thing. I used to live in one of the biggest cities and I was a tiny bit intoxicated but I heard someone run behind and I turned around and there was a guy with a gun trying to mug me. I heard someone scream in a calm voice do it now. I threw my wallet about ten fifteen yards and sprinted the opposite way at full speed. I ran about a mile and a half before I looked back. I don't know who told me that but it might have saved my life

Mine wasn't a voice. But a man I didn't know, have never met! I probably should have fallen asleep, and drove off of the bridge I was on, but I was suddenly aware of a man in light colored clothing in my headlights, waving his arms like to wave someone over for help. As soon as I regained control of my car he was gone!

I found out yesterday this is what it is called. I had an experience when I was 16. I got into a car wreck..flipping the car almost 14 times. As I was flipping a man told me to jump in the passengers side. I did but hesitated a sec and as I did, a tree came up thru the driver's side floor, knocking off the headrest and going thru the roof, stopping the vehicle. That voice simply said...jump in the passenger side. Had I not, I would be dead. I got really badly injured but I survived. Thank you so much for this beautiful video. I believe in God but I struggle w that voice. It was very harsh, very loud and very...not human. I can describe it. The reason I hesitated is (of course being in shock) but it scared me. I thought I had died or something. Anyway thank you for listening.

my mom experienced third man syndrome and i hadn’t ever realized that’s what it was until now. when she was young and still in her parents house, there was a really bad storm at night while everyone was sleeping that began flooding my moms room in the basement. she heard a familiar man’s voice say her name quietly in her sleep and over again a few times with more and more importance and volume until she jumped awake and saw her whole floor flooded. the voice woke her up right before the water reached the electrical outlets that would’ve shocked her.

Ok the last story sent chills down my spine because I've heard something similar but from an extended family member. I was told this story as a kid and mostly ignored it until the Lindburg story just now. Apparently my aunt was walking home at night and she had to pass through and alley known for having violent drunks and other attacks. It was the quickest way home considering the time and no one was in sight, so she decided to walk/run through really quick. She said when she started running there was no one half way through until she got to the end where a bunch of men started to show up almost like they crawled out of the shadows, so she picked up her pace and so did they. She said they kept calling to her and yelling for her so slowdown or else but she didn't stop until she got to the street lights. With no neighbors in sight, she kept trying to keep distance when suddenly the men stopped and scattered in different directions, she said she thought she would meet them up ahead but to her surprise no one caught up to her. The next morning her brother walks in and asks her who the two really talk and big men were that escorted her home, she told him she had no idea what he was talking about but he asks her again because apparently those men were so scary that they scared away the men chasing her and everyone had been talking about it because no one came out at that time. To this day, she insists that no one was with her but people saw two men walking side by side with her but she saw nothing

My 3rd man experience: As a youth, I was suddenly in a potentially lethal situation through no fault of my own. I was loudly given specific instructions and an explanation for the instructions to help me avoid harm. The voice was no one I knew, a man or men, very loud and commanding. I instantly trusted and followed the advice and came to no harm. If I had proceeded with my own actions I had been about to take, it could most certainly had led to my demise or great physical harm. I believe the voice to be supernatural in nature, not from my own mind. I'm very grateful for the help from whomever/whatever it was to this day!

I have experienced it during 100 mile runs. I assume exhaustion, dehydration, and mental distress were factors, but that does not change the fact that it had a profound impact during the event and well beyond it. I do believe it is unexplainable, and I do believe it is often supernatural, a connection with God.

I’ve definitely felt like I wasn’t alone all of a sudden while in a dangerous situation. It’s not usually comforting, but it’s a fantastic motivator to be keen on your surroundings and make good decisions. I wonder if some people just have a different kind of reaction/response to their “hairs standing up on end” or however you might describe that “sixth sense” where you know you’re being watched/followed. It would be pretty hard to get a scan of someone’s brain activity while this phenomenon is happening, so it’s not likely we’ll get a chance to compare any time soon.

It was the second to last day before my brother and I were due to leave Langkawi. I had secretly promised myself that I would swim out to the island across the bay. I was a considerably stronger swimmer in those days, but had never swam far out into open waters before. The island seemed not far to the eye.
Lean and hungry for the challenge I dived into the gentle surf, the warm waters of the shallows giving way to cooler waters as I swam further out from the beach. Hand over hand, breath by breath, I slid out to deep water as the sun, alone in a clear blue sky, looked down on me. Every now and then lifting my eyes to the island I took my bearings.
I knew a little about currents and drift and how they worked, and steadily found myself having to correct my course to keep in line with the island. A minor annoyance, and one I felt more than ready for. Eventually I found myself breathing with the rhythm and welcomed the exertion, which was no less than expected. I had prided myself that my arms and shoulders, chest and back were fit and lean and strong.
I moved deeper into the dark waters, but slowly found that I had to make more corrections to my course. I persisted, headstrong. This was after all what a challenge should be. I had never really questioned where the island sat on a map before, but beyond the bay lay the open waters of the Malacca Straights and the Andaman Sea. I had not thought that the drift would have been this strong but time and again I found myself having to correct, and correct, and correct, to the point where I felt I was almost swimming parallel to the island just to find headway against the current. The sun beat down and with each pull I began to feel a little more strength ebb from my arms as they began to tire. The hard breathing at first relished, now became tinged with flurries of fatigue and impatience. A questioning voice in the very back of my mind began to whisper a near silent mantra, ‘can I do this?’.
Failure had never even been an option until this point. I was prideful then, but did not consider myself rash. I simply dug in, mentally urging myself on. On into the dark waters, on through the current, on to the island. My breathing was becoming ragged. The power in my strokes seeming to make little headway, and each kick from my legs began to feel like they were pumping acid. I think it was then that I realised this may actually not be possible. I think it was here that my eyes suddenly began to look not forward to the island ahead, but back across the waters to the beach. And in my growing state of anxiety I realised that I had already passed the point of no return. The beach behind was further away than the island in front.
It took me a while to get my head around this. Fatigue was clouding my judgment. My eyes moved from the island to where the current was taking me. A clear stretch of blue where the sky met the sea and nothing could be seen for miles. I felt sick, but knew that worrying never helps to solve a problem. Every moment wasted was leading me out into that vast nothingness. No one was near to help or even see me. The beach was a blurred stain behind me and no boats seemed to travel these waters. Rescue became an option I could not rely upon. The only option was ahead.
In an attempt to conserve energy and keep my mouth above the water I turned onto my back and began to kick, eyes to the sky, occasionally tilting my head back to look forward and keep a course ahead of the current. The drift seemed as strong as it ever had, and inch by inch, foot by foot I felt it robbing me of momentum. I forced the mantra to work for me; ‘kick, kick, kick, kick..’.
Eventually my legs weakened to drift wood limbs of bone and sinew moving through molasses. Only the sun was my companion, captured in the high blue vaults of the heavens and tasked to watch over me, ineffable as the currents that moved beneath.
I did not realise the silence, until only the sound of my lungs filled my senses. No splash of broken limbs touched the water, no ripple in the wake of tired thighs broke its surface. The waters had always been deceptively calm, as if watching and waiting in silence. ‘Was, this, how it could end?’ I thought.
My eyes searched the heavens through beads of water, kaleidoscopic beams of light washed the sky ablaze with psychedelic colours reflecting through the haze. I lay there in the silence, the cool waters caressing the aching numbness of my body, sunlight warming me from above. Eyes open, at peace, caught on gently rolling waves, and from that silence a voice spoke to me.
    “You are not alone”
With the words a warm pulsing energy slowly moved through me. My breath shuddered, and tears began to fill my weary eyes. The sky was filled again with refracted light, and the sun shone down from the heavens and warmed me with it’s words. I felt strengthened, fortified. The weariness, while still there seem lessened, and my scattered mind made whole and focused. I stared up into the sun and blinked as if new born, and began to kick once more. Time moved and was still. Silence trilled and was still. The current slowed and was still. My arms reached out and I began to pull through the water. Long steady stroke building on long steady stroke, my arms now woken from torpor and invigorated. I lifted my eyes to the island and it appeared clear and close, far enough to make out individual palm trees above the sandy shore off in the far distance.
Hope filled me, and a new mantra sprang like a well to thirsty lips, ‘almost there, keep going, almost there...’ I began to feel the ebb and flow of waves as I slowly entered warm shallower waters, quicker and more urgent than the cooling swells behind me, until my toes brushed against hard smooth pebbles below the breakwater. Flipping onto my stomach I paddled forward until my feet clearly found the bottom, then my hands. Stumbling as I tried to stand, the strength of my legs denied me, and so I came to the soft white sands at the waters edge like some primordial amphibian learning the weight of the world as if for the first time. I lay there, face part buried, the rattling sound of my lungs in my ears accompanied by the percussive crash of the waves as they spilled out across the sands. Sunlight warmed me, and through beading eyes I looked up at my celestial companion once more, shimmering in it’s golden halo in the sky and offered it far humbled and heartfelt words of thanks.

I experienced this during a burnover as a wildland firefighter. ( you get trapped and have to deploy a fire shelter until the fire burns over/around you) Me and a couple of friends got isolated from our crew when the wind changed rapidly on a very active fire and had to deploy in a rocky area by a creek where there was less fuel, It was beyond intense I thought we would die. Lips going numb head and face tingling legs gone from under you, stomach and heart changing places saying sorry I am so fcking stupid Mom in my head fear. When fire like that burns over/around you it sounds like a freight train. And I remember screaming to the "warrior" to my right to keep your face to the ground it will be ok, thats how they presented in my mind. And I felt better and kept the intense panic under control knowing they were there. When the situation was over there was just water to my right, nobody there. I could see both my friends to my left as we were deploying, I personally think its psychological given how much I identified as a warrior in those days. But it certainly helped

When I was a child, I was walking along a creek with a neighborhood friend. Mid winter, creek frozen over. The ledge we were standing on broke off, I fell in through the ice. The ledge was too steep and he couldn’t pull me out, and ice was too thick to swim to a place I could get out. He ran home to get help and I held on to a root. After what seemed like years, I heard a voice that said “let go” and calm came over me. I let go of the root and started to succumb to hypothermia. I was pulled out by ems shortly after, with water in my lungs.

My experience was unlike any of the others I've read about. In the early 1980s I was alone, driving a very isolated gravel backwoods road on a fall day having visited friends who were 'off grid' for a year in a teepee. I was maybe two hours from home heading back to Revelstoke BC where I lived. I rounded a corner at 80 kph and there were two guys waving at me to stop. My speed carried me past them some distance before I could stop. I waited, engine idling as they walked slowly towards me. I watched them in the mirrors. As they came within 10 metres of the car they split; one heading to the driver's door the other to the passenger side. The driver's side guy began reaching into his pocket as he got closer. At that moment a piercing siren sounded inside my head, not in my ears. It was unlike anything I'd ever heard. It only stopped when I took off, leaving the guys cursing at me.
I've experienced many dangerous situations before and since, but never had that siren sound. I've often wondered what it was. It certainly urged me to get the hell outta there.

"I knew it was imagination, but the feeling persisted." Uncanny.
I like the bicameral theories; lives lived too deliberately and alienated by the immediate, unplanned action of their intuition, as though it were another person altogether guiding them. I don't really know what I'm talking about but its a fun subject to speculate. Of course, we can't rule out supernatural influences.

I stumbled upon this video and I was curious because I’ve experienced something similar May 2023 -indeed a moment when I was in need of love and reassurance. Mystically, a great angel was looking down upon me, what appeared to be a man just by his body, he was handsome although I can’t make out or distinguish his features, but it was like he was saying he sees me and acknowledges me and is watching over me. I was alone and praying and just in a desperate moment when this happened. I wasn’t hallucinating, perfectly healthy. It’s a day I’ll always remember.

i wouldn’t say ive had a third man experience but I have had something similar. During a turning point in my life when I was feeling really down, I sometimes got this feeling that someone else was in the car with me when i was driving. it happened twice that I can remember, I even would turn to talk to them and then realize nobody was there. I thought maybe it was me thinking my girlfriend was still in the car after I had dropped her off or something but I really cant say for-sure. whatever it is, the brain sure can do some crazy things.

My friends and I climbed Mount Washington many years ago. There were 5 of us. Except that I always felt like there was a 6th person that for the life of me, I cannot remember or name.we were stranded a mile from the summit and had to camp overnight. Mount Washington is famous for having the worst weather and the highest recorded wind speed on Earth. People die frequently. We survived, though one person died the day before from an icefall and we noticed the trail of blood coming down. I keep trying to remember who the 6th person in our party could have been.

Ive wondered if i have experienced 3rd man syndrome. Ive been through several situations where i shouldve died, or at the least felt like i was. Im not sure how i made it through. The only one i really ever talk about was when these boys set me on fire when i was seven. It was crazy. They say 3rd degree burns hurt less than second because your nerves get messed up, but all i know is i was in crazy pain. I still have dreams about it, but its usually isnt when i was on fire. A couple weeks or so later i woke up in the backseat of my moms car, and the pain i felt was insane.

I was driving along a straight road at night. As I approached a T junction connection to my right, my foot, totally of its own accord, came off the accelerator and hit the brake. The instant I stopped , a car on the road to my right, that had not seen the stop sign for the junction, crashed headlong into the wall I was driving along. If my foot had not hit the brake, that car would have wiped me out, and also my family who were in the car with me. I believe that the Lord, who knows the end from the beginning, had sent an angel to save us that night.

there are many stories like this of angles who help us during our life. in the Quran Allah says
every person has two “angels in succession” who protect him/her from harm, unless the harm is divinely decreed. The Holy Quran states,
“For each (person), there are angels in succession, before and behind him. They guard him by the command of Allah…” (13:11).

@@thenavidsonrecordd My bad didn't see. I'm dumb. Thank you! As a reward I'll tell you a scary story.
On March 12, 2021. It was blood moon night, and I was bouncing outside a club. For some reason, that night we had 12 different individuals attempt to either kill me or my friends with guns. All separate instances happening within a 3 hour time span. I've never experienced a gunfight, being shot at, or threatened with a gun before.
That night everything that could have gone wrong went wrong. While every single armed bouncer was dealing with separate issues, I was pointing my gun at someone who wanted to shoot my friend in the back. Eventually I managed to convince this drunk armed man to walk away. However, I didn't realize that there was a 2nd man with a gun behind me. He racked a round into his gun and I was immediately aware that I was dead. I knew no matter what I did I was a goner.
Within a fraction of a second I saw my ex telling me that everything was gonna be ok and that all I had to do was follow her to the light. She smiled and I was at peace, happy, and ready to die.
HOWEVER, the asshole NEVER shot me. Instead, he made fun of me and RAN AWAY. That man made me see death and laughed at me. I haven't been the same person since. I know now death flies over you and your mind slows time down to comfort you before death. Being in a state of complete happiness and it being taken away. I'm glad I'm alive, but at the same time I have to wait to die to feel alive once again.
I've been trying to read anything I can ever since. Thank you for making this video and giving me some sort of comfort.
