Same thing just happened to my 2 year old Hobie Compass. Thanks for posting this. The stress crack just appeared and in the same place along the scupper column as yours did. Can't think of a thing that I've done but peddling the boat.
That really sucks and I'm sorry this happened to you. It seems Hobie is not getting a lot of good news lately. I have a 2015 Outback with no issues. Love the boat. I've never used a cart in the scuppers (I suspect that) not because I knew something, just by chance I guess. Please keep us advised how this turns out.
Hey all you kayak anglers: Carry a bilge pump every time you're out on the water, period. This could happen to you in a bigger body of water/ in bad weather. The loss of stability with all that water in the hull could be fatal!! Also the new Outbacks are shit...don't buy them. I've heard a lot of complaints particularly serious leaks in the front hatch. Hobies have gotten so outrageously expensive and yet there are issues like this... It might be actually safer (and definitely cheaper) to buy an older used Hobie! I have a 2011 Adventure that is still going strong. I had a drivewell crack but patched it up inside and out with a lot of G-flex epoxy and fiberglass (highly recommended). Bone dry ever since. And yes I always carry a bilge pump.
Jeff Edwards hey Jeff, are you my cousin? Lol, I’ll be inspecting my 2019 Outback after each outing for that failure. Such good information to know. Thanks for sharing your experience.
That happened to me in the Port Jefferson sound going after fluke and porgies. Had a long crack in rear hull. Luckily I was with a buddy as well. It's the weirdest feeling when the hull fills up, the stability is completely off and then you realize the water level rising on the sides of the kayak. Happy you made it back safely.
Generally pre heating and pre coating of scupper inserts prior to final rotational moulding will reduce stress cracking and thin walled perforation in the scupper holes. This is a very common problem ,particularly on low end kayak manufacturers and given the kayak experiences serious flexing of deck hull and scupper I would definately call warranty.I would suggest you will almost certainly expect a replacement.Cheers.
Not saying it is or isn't a manufacturing defect, but it is a sign of undue repeated stress in that location. The discoloration along the edges of the crack is an indication of stress fatigue. Probably caused by: 1) using repeated excessive force while carting the yak, 2) repeatedly using the scupper as an anchoring point with a stake out pole, 3) repeatedly placing and removing excessive weight on top of the scupper, 4) a combination of all these factors in cold climate. And yes I do have a degree in materials science and manufacturing.
Feels off "liking" this video. Very interested to see how Hobie responds. I have a couple of very simple kayaks and have been considering upgrading to a more serious type with a propulsion system. Not sure Hobie is worth the extra money. Seems like the mirage drive is always breaking down, and if there are hull issues now...I'm just glad to see you made it back safely.
Yeah Elias, you are probably right. Hobie will claim that the crack in the drain hole area of your yak is caused by you using a yak cart and moving over rough ground causing "undo stress and premature wear of said region of your kayak, thereby voiding the warranty" A whole lotta Hobie B.S. for not backing their product, and quality control slipping. That doesn't look like an easy do it yourself fix either judging by the location and size of the split. It sucks, I hope everything works out for you and Hobie does the repairs, or at least covers the cost of the repairs.
For the future Elias.. consider installing a Hobie Mirage Peddle Drive to a really good unsinkable bilge pump and go fishing.... later on you may want to add a really great looking Yellow Kayak to the bilge and drive system.... Old Saying: "Form follows function and if it doesn't... it's called Art."
This sucks but im glad your ok. I had a crack form while in LIS, my family and i were in a 18 foot fiberglass boat. You fill up quick and its pretty nerve racking. Always check around your scuppers!!! Keep up the great videos.
Maybe water got in between that plastic thing and the actual hull and froze just an idea but probably the hobie cart did it I use boonedox landing gear not just for the ease of use but I never liked the carts I bought one with my first hobie and it was always a pain to use and it damaged my pro angler first day out rubbing on the tires plus u can just tell it puts a lot of stress on the scuppers
Holy Crap! I have been looking at the Hobies and now I’m a little worried. Glad you were close to shore. It could have been disastrous in open water. Always carry a bilge pump. But it may not have helped a lot. Glad you are safe.
Very glad you werren't 3 miles out to sea fishing, or this could have had a much less happy ending! Glad you are ok, and you are right - if you are fishing in very light boats like a kayak or canoe, having a friend along is a very good idea.
That sucks bud. At least you weren't at the CBBT. That looked like a pretty trouty creek too. Good luck getting compensated. And I'm not being sarcastic.
My Ocean Kayak Ultra 4.3 New Zealand 2011 model came with a pinhole leak by the scupper hole corner. They sent me a repair kit and I fixed it. Seems like they join the two halves and weld it there for my model and it wasn’t done perfect. Haven’t had any issues since. I never liked the idea of using a cart that goes through the scupper. I have the C-Tug with the new flex wheel upgrade. Works great on sand.
I’m a structural engineer and that looks like a stress crack from buckling. That is, those scupper tubes are like columns in a building and if it’s too thin for a person’s weight, it will buckle, deform, and crack. I’ll have to check my hobie to see if it has the same design. The most load for those scuppers is if a person sits on the kayak near the scuppers and is still on land or shallow water and the weight is forced directly thru the scupper as opposed to widely distributed throughout the boat hull when it is in water.
Yessss waiting for this episode ^^, it seems broke from a pression on scupper hole maybe someone stand up on this when kayak is still on ground, this thing scare me
Very fortunate not to be out on the ocean!! Do you think this will make you inspect the internals of the kayak before going out from now on? It was good to share that. Thx man.
Sorry to see you having this kind of trouble just before heading to Fla. but my guess is if Hobie doesn't do right by you Three Belles will. I wanted to get out for some blackfishing today but the weather here in NJ, wind and snow, put the screws to that. I am thinking between the weather and watching this video it' time to turn my 2018 Outback over cover it with a tarp and just hit the party boats until it gets warm again. Good luck, have a good time in Florida.
Glad you are home safe, with your gear. Try fishing Banks Channel along the piers, good water flow there and normally can catch a few Specs to size in there because of the vicinity of the Inlet. Stay Safe and Fish On!!
I know some guys put pool noodles/empty bottles in their kayak so if it fills it won’t sink. What did Elias ever decide about the Center console boat anyway
Pool noodles/bottle aren't going to fill up enough volume to prevent your water logged kayak from turning into a rolling log on the water. Furthermore I've read in a few places and have had a TON of water in my Hobie before to know that the hull most likely will not sink. The more immediate concern is staying upright. DAMHIK A much better way to go is to fill the hull with inflatable bags. There are kayak specific ones that are a bit pricey but I'm sure there is a DIY or cheaper alternative. The bags fill the volume much more effectively in case of water intrusion
I know this is a very popular kayak channel. I am curious if hobie has reached out to you with any attempt to make good on their flaw. Glad u got home safe
You can fix that. You won't be able to use that type of cart anymore. In order not to lose the drain ability of the Scupper hole, use a smaller piece of PVC pipe that will become your new Scupper hole. Place it in the middle and fill the void around it in around the Scupper hole with hot resin.
Saw a good video of Zoffinger doing something similar with one of his Pelican bass boats. Not a bad idea, but the scupper hole area on the outback might be ab it tricky to perform such a trick.
do you have any updates, since that happened, if it is fixable and possibly under warranty, since you got the kayak new this year? my sympathies man, now we certainly know why you should never go alone!
RIP to that hobie. Glad you were safe and out there with a buddy. You going to get another hobie or venture out into any other pedal drive kyack companies?
From what I understand, some of the old scupper carts have posts that are too short and don't stick up past the top of the scupper holes, this can damage the inside of the scupper during transport. The new carts have longer posts as well as collars that keep the weight off of the hull and distribute it onto the reinforced scupper. So if you buy a new hobie you can't necessarily use all of your old gear with it.
That sucks man. I've had a 2011 outback since new and use the scupper cart everytime and I'm starting to think I've been very lucky. I really need an upgrade but I hate the nose design of the 2019 and I'm seeing too many failures on the new drives.
Well, that really sucks. Dont you have a couple of kayaks, though? I think a good shop can repair rotomolded boats if you have one nearby and would trust it. Good luck and keep us informed.
really even Gorilla duct tape will fail after a few uses BUT maybe if there is a waterproof duct tape,, I don't know,, and/ or what about using flex -seal in conjunction with Gorilla tape I have never used Flex -seal but they promise that it is waterproof,,,just my idea
Interesting I saw a video not that long ago with another kayak that did the same if I remember correct it also broke in a similar place. Lucky you were not out deep.
And all the equipments putting on too much weight on those tubes. Cold weather doesn’t help either. I suggest hobie makes the hole smaller leaving less room for the cart to wiggle around and/or reinforce that area and make it a little thicker.
for sure , scupper cart loads are the most concentrated loads=highest stress a non whitewater kayak will ever see. Water loads are so dispersed the stress is MUCH lower. Cracks like this , will almost always open up before launching and not initiate once on the water....so it's most important to check for leaks soon after launching...if no leaks then ,unlikely to have any later (on that same trip).
I'd be surprised,if Hobie tried not get in another Kayak for free , most people that have had problems rave about how easy and quick , Hobie took care of them .
Dude Elias that sucks. Please keep in touch about the warranty through Hobie. They can be a pain in the A$$ I hear. I can see why you were thinking a boat now.
I,ll be shocked if Hobie doesn't just give you a new boat. You probably sell more kayaks for them than anyone. Is the reason you changed colors have something to do with how strong the plastic is?
If it was anything but a hobie I'd say the cart is 100% the issue but hobbies have reinforced suppers. If I were you I'd look into a cart that sit underneath the hull instead of thru the suppers. May help in the long run. Ctug has a good one
I kind of see this as good luck. It could have happened in a worse place in worse conditions, and now that he knows this can happen, he can prepare for the next time.
Elias honestly to me you're one of the greatest fisherman I can see myself buying your products or books in a few years, I think you should quit the kayak and get a little boat, take your fishing to another level and you'll be able to generate alot more material for your channel. It's obviously more then a hobby for you
Elias, if you need a boat. I have 2 in the Wilmington area....and would be glad to set in the back, keep my mouth shut... and just watch/net as needed lol
I had the exact problem this fluke season 3 miles from launch area in the manasquan inlet caused by the welds breaking on the hobie heavy duty cart spreading taking on major water in a Hobie Pro Angler had to do an emergency launch at Fisherman's Supply authorized Hobie dealer
I wanna say it was the cart that cracked the scrupper hole but I think it was bad manufacturing. The way the carts and yaks themselves are made, the yaks wouldnt crack like that with rough use. I think maybe the yak was jus to thin in that spot or what have you. Either way I would get a new cart style to avoid this.
This is why I won't pay the price for an overpriced Hobie. I'll stick my with my cheap Ascend 12T. Damn the bad luck, but you were in a safe place for the casualty.
A lesson for all concerned ... especially Hobie's engineering department. That entire wheel assembly was probably designed for hauling over parking lots and sandy beach. Looks like an improper manufacturing or molding stess crack!!!

Almost looks crushed, where the plastic changes colors on that shot you did of the interior of the yak. Glad you weren’t out on the ocean!!

They will make it right they usually do.
Thats why in the westcoast we have a hand pump at all times
hand pump is a must for kayaks

Wow, glad you are ok. Hobie has got to make this right. No way a $3K kayak ought to crack. Hope my 2017 Camo Outback doesn't do this!
Well that blows. Maybe Hobie will see this video and send you a new kayak lol.
Very fortunate not to be out on the ocean!! Do you think this will make you inspect the internals of the kayak before going out from now on? It was good to share that. Thx man.

Just a thought, battery operated small utility pump in case that happens out in the ocean?
And you bought it new this year? Crazy
I know this is a very popular kayak channel. I am curious if hobie has reached out to you with any attempt to make good on their flaw. Glad u got home safe

I've got a leaky kayak too. Going to try and fix it but not sure if that's a fools errand or not.
And... that is why I got the Ctug... assuming you use a scupper hole cart???
do you have any updates, since that happened, if it is fixable and possibly under warranty, since you got the kayak new this year?
my sympathies man, now we certainly know why you should never go alone!
Glad you got off the water safe. Weird how it cracked way up under the protective tube. I'm sure hobie will make it right.
RIP to that hobie. Glad you were safe and out there with a buddy. You going to get another hobie or venture out into any other pedal drive kyack companies?
A guy I know with an outback cracked under his seat.
That sucks just a heads up hobie's warranty replacement will take a while youll have to use your revo for the next 3 months.
From what I understand, some of the old scupper carts have posts that are too short and don't stick up past the top of the scupper holes, this can damage the inside of the scupper during transport. I have a 2019 Outback with the identical problem. My buddy had the same issue with his. Neither one of our boats was ever on a scupper cart.
Wow you are so lucky you weren’t out on open ocean , glad you made it back in safe that’s some scary shit !
Not a big fan of scupper carts. Even with reinforcements HDPE gives out over time under consistent flexing.
Elias, I hope
Hobie does the right thing for you.
May the rest of your trip be trouble free! 🍺
Nothing that a couple of wraps of Duct Tape can't fix...! :o
really even Gorilla duct tape will fail after a few uses BUT maybe if there is a waterproof duct tape,, I don't know,, and/ or what about using flex -seal in conjunction with Gorilla tape
I have never used Flex -seal but they promise that it is waterproof,,,just my idea
have you ever had luck with hobies?
I know this was a couple weeks ago. Did you get any type of response from your dealer or Hobie?
Thankfully you were close to shore. No boat, especially one with a battery should be without a simple electric bilge pump.
That is scary dude, glad you didn't lose any gear or worse.
Interesting I saw a video not that long ago with another kayak that did the same if I remember correct it also broke in a similar place. Lucky you were not out deep.
Could it have been the kayak cart that caused the crack?
And all the equipments putting on too much weight on those tubes. Cold weather doesn’t help either. I suggest hobie makes the hole smaller leaving less room for the cart to wiggle around and/or reinforce that area and make it a little thicker.
Scupper carts are a terrible idea. They put too much stress on an already weak spot.

Cracks like this , will almost always open up before launching and not initiate once on the water....so it's most important to check for leaks soon after launching...if no leaks then ,unlikely to have any later (on that same trip).
Ya thats possibly because I remember reading that you should not put to much weight in the boat when using them
@@nolanyork733 i'm def guilty of that....this has re-inspired me to make a "cradle" type cart
From the inside view, appears to have been compressed vertically to crack that molded tube? But how?
How often does that happen?
You should sell the broken hull on facebook for cheap...LOLOLOLOL sorry couldn't resist
Like to know what the outcome of this is. Did Hobie warranty it. This seems to be a common problem with them.
They should make the area where the cart goes in a bit thicker.
glad your safe to fish again elias
Looks like weight/ pressure has caused that tube to expand and rupture. If the manufacturer won’t cough up it looks fixable.
I'd be surprised,if Hobie tried not get in another Kayak for free , most people that have had problems rave about how easy and quick , Hobie took care of them .
If it was out in the open ocean what would you have done?
Dude Elias that sucks. Please keep in touch about the warranty through Hobie. They can be a pain in the A$$ I hear. I can see why you were thinking a boat now.
Sweet, 4000 dollar kayak and it leaks....Scratch the '18 model off my wish list, I wanna go off shore.
I,ll be shocked if Hobie doesn't just give you a new boat. You probably sell more kayaks for them than anyone. Is the reason you changed colors have something to do with how strong the plastic is?
looks cold.
What kayak was it
If it was anything but a hobie I'd say the cart is 100% the issue but hobbies have reinforced suppers. If I were you I'd look into a cart that sit underneath the hull instead of thru the suppers. May help in the long run. Ctug has a good one
BAD LUCK. Very helpful video. I have been in market for Kayak. Will this change your opinion of Hobie. If so what are you suggesting.
I kind of see this as good luck. It could have happened in a worse place in worse conditions, and now that he knows this can happen, he can prepare for the next time.
Thank goodness ur not out in the open water. That would suck really bad
Happened to me today with my Hobie revolution 13... Damn you Hobie!
Elias honestly to me you're one of the greatest fisherman I can see myself buying your products or books in a few years, I think you should quit the kayak and get a little boat, take your fishing to another level and you'll be able to generate alot more material for your channel. It's obviously more then a hobby for you
Damn, you're the last person to deserve this. Glad you made it back ok and had your buddy with you.
Glad you're ok
I'm glad this wasn't in the ocean man , could've been a lot worse ..count your blessings dude ✌🏻
That scupper hole cart is what did you in. Hobbies should take care of it for you. If not plastic weld it
Elias, if you need a boat. I have 2 in the Wilmington area....and would be glad to set in the back, keep my mouth shut... and just watch/net as needed lol
That's awesome!
Good thing you weren't out very far. You were close to the shore line.
The music at the end was sick
Damn Elias, I'm sorry this happened to you.
Hobies have 2 year warranty, so no worries on getting your kayak fixed or replaced. Tho it sure ruined your fishing trip that day.
bro what’s going on with HOBIE with these new Kayak had same problem
I am glad you made it back safely. You need a hand bilge pump.
Damn that sucks. Sorry man.
So sorry! A real bummer! Looks like Santa might be bringing you a new one!
In the classic words of EliasV ... “DAAAMN SON!”
Any reply from Hobie?
Glad I kept my 2015 outback!! Sorry to see this bro gl
Glad you're okay. Pumps are cheap ya'all.
Sorry to see this happen to a guy like you. But on a funny note flex seal it up lol you’ll be swimming with the sharks in no time
