What i used to do if it was a real bad game I'd bring it back and say it didn't work. They would give me a new rental But you wouldn't want to do that too often.
I don't know if I go as far as PTSD, but, the one game that no matter how many times my best friend in myself rented it, denied us a victory, was Ninja Gaiden on NES. I had to be almost 24 years old and, by then I had purchased it, before I finally beat it.

Back in 95’ on a military base I knew a guy who had the game gear tv tuner. He jacked the cable tv line into it and BAM! We had cable tv on a late night desk watch at hq. So it did work but I guess you need to tinker a whole lot.
Biggest disappointment for me was renting "Back to the Future" on NES. I loved that movie and was so excited to play a video game about it. We didn't have a lot of money so renting was pretty much my only way to play new games. After a weekend of trying and trying to get anywhere in the game...I got to the diner stage (which is practically the beginning)...and died before I even knew what was happening. I didn't even know what I was supposed to do because there were no instructions. I was so mad that I got in trouble for yelling at the TV and upsetting my younger sister lol. Years later I saw AVGN review that game and I got angry all over again. Great video as always.
A friend of mine showed me a game that was so bad that I was begging to play Back to the Future. It was called Dragon Power. I have nothing good to say about that game.

Rise of the Robots was a Big letdown. The developers must have forgot to stick an actual game in there before they released it. It didn't even look that good either.
The model 1 Gameboy Advance hands down. Brilliant games, fantastic ergonomics, but a screen that's so dark it makes Mario look like an Undertaker Funko Pop. I really didn't discover how great the library for the Advance was until a year later when I picked up a used DS Lite. I think growing up in the 80s, and with a C64, the licensed titles were often the most disappointing. The C64 versions would often be rushed to release in time with the movie or show they were tied in to so you got things like the C64 version of Robocop, which to this day I have mad nostalgia for, but you can't complete without a cheat code because you can't finish the drug factory level thanks to a game breaking glitch. Good job Ocean. Solid effort. I mean I can't beat Robocop on the Gameboy either, but at least that's because I suck, not because it's inherently unfinishable.
My biggest disappointment in retro gaming was the Game Gear. I already had a Game Boy at the time which I enjoyed greatly. But the lack of color and backlit screen as you mentioned made me wonder what I would be like to have a Game Gear. So it took a lot of begging and pleading with my parents but I finally got on for Christmas of 1994. It came with Sonic 2 and I was greatly satisfied that I could play portable games without having to be under a lamp. What I didn’t realize though and probably the reason why Nintendo didn’t make the original Game Boy with a colored and backlit screen is how much it drained batteries. I kid you not I had to go through at least five sets of batteries within the first two weeks of owning the Game Gear. And yeah I know there was a battery pack for it. But at that point I was so frustrated and disappointed that I actually apologized to my mom and dad for begging them to get it for me in the first place. 😄
When the original Tetris came out for the NES I was about 6 years old, and I had absolutely NO IDEA that Tetris and Arkanoid WERE NOT the same game. In the advertisements for this "new" game I've never heard of, and totally mistook it for something similar to Arkanoid, and that's all I wanted for Christmas that year. Well, I got it, opened it up, and found out real quick that they are NOT in fact the same games in any way! I'm a new sub to the channel, and I really am enjoying your work! Atari 2600 Pac-Man was my first experience with the game and I greatly enjoyed it. I always perceived arcade games as a special treat rather than seeing the console versions as inferior. good video, but i have to disagree with Metroid II. Metroid II didn't need a map because the area you were exploring would let you know you had eliminated all the Metroids in that area by simulating an earthquake, and the main cavern area would drain some lava. Also, if Metroid II DID have a map, the game would be disappointingly simple.

Great video! I'm sorry that you got ripped off by the U-Force, I remember seeing the ads for it but I didn't believe it would really work and decided against it. However, I do remember very clearly when Pac-Man came out for the 2600. We pre-ordered it and I went to the store with my mom to pick it up. It was $38 which was quite a bit of money back then. My mom hesitated on the price and asked the clerk if it was like the arcade and he assured her it was. I was about 6 and I remember looking up at the guy and I knew he was lying. We got home and were quite shocked when we saw how crappy it looked. My best friend called and his entire family was angry...his mom went back to the store and yelled at them until they refunded their money. I remember my dad coming home from work and he took one look at the game and said "what the heck is this? Did they forget to finish programming it?". My parents were both really upset and as kids my siblings and I were all upset. We barely played the game and Atari surely took us for a ride. Oh well, live and learn I guess!
No the Lynx did not come out before the Gameboy. It came out after but is the 1st color portable. Yeah it is pretty decent but I still got a Game Gear and Gameboy before I got it. FYI I am in America so perhaps I am wrong if you are from another country
@@hungerforhorror well sorry if I made you feel bad. My memory isn't as sharp lately either . Just hoping I start forgetting more that I wish I could forget and less of which I can't
I had a Sega CD growing up, but my parents swerved through the good games and instead got a bunch of those crappy FMV games like Sewer Shark. I did have Sonic CD, but that was it.
Sonic CD had a kick ass opening segment video and music but.. the gameplay itself was just another sonic game and that's fine if you like Sonic.. but still.
Mario Is Missing hits home for me. I rented it one night based on the box art on the back. I got conned. You really summed up that experience being tricked into renting this turd nicely.
I remember having to pull off a little lie to my dad after going to Blockbuster. dad this copy of zelda 2 wont work and then you would have to hope that was the only copy so they cant just exchange it for another copy lol. also This is seriously is one of the best channels on UA-cam keeps making me tap into my best childhood memories I love it. You're doing a great job man I love the passion you have for old school video games.
#3: I had that but I loved it. The TV tuner worked OK at best, but I wasn't a kid when I got it so my expectations weren't as high. I ended up using it as a monitor for camerawork in one of my production classes. The instructor was impressed with how well I composed my shots. Also, just cuz you're near a TV station doesn't mean you're near the transmitter. The tower and transmitter for my local TV station was about 20 miles away from the city so they could reach over the nearby mountains and serve the rest of the county.
I remember buying Battletoads for Genesis, thinking it was a new Battletoads, and not a port of the NES game I'd already played to death. I was too young to know any better.
Just found your channel. I've really enjoyed the 2 videos I've seen so far, so well done! Most disappointing retro gaming moment that I can recall was Karnov on the NES compared to the arcade. I was a young kid and couldn't understand why the NES version couldn't be as good as the arcade. Didn't quite understand the laws of physics...
If I remember correctly, Mario is Missing was Daisy's secret video game appearance. It was well defined in the SNES port even though the coloring of Daisy was the same as the title screen of NES Tournament Golf.
I love this video, I just had to watch it again tonight (along with a few others I’ve watched a few times already). I hope everything is good for you and your family Tyler. Be good my friend. R
Cool vid... Oddly enough when u mentioned about how bad ET was on Atari... I was watching the Goldbergs episode where they referenced that particular game in the story...
More like Contra FARCE. That was a huge disappointment but, apparently they paid a bunch of people to say it was good. I dont know what game they were playing
As a kid, I knew the activator, uforce, even the power glove weren't gonna work. I stayed clear of even thinking about purchasing those items. It was to good to be true.
Nice stuff and I’d say this list is pretty damn solid. Thankfully I was a Nintendo kid and avoided all those Sega peripherals. I only had to avoid the Virtual Boy which was so dumb to me. I remember my buddies wanting the 32X and when I finally played it, I didn’t have the heart to tell my buddy it blew. Keep it up!
You talk about disappointment with Myst, for a bad ending, my disappointment with Myst was for what ever reason my game would just crash when you tried to launch it.
My brother and I always let our cousin rent or buy the questionable games so we would know how to spend our money! 😆 You had to wait 25 years, Tyler, but you finally have Shaq ...everywhere!! 😏 I don’t recall being too disappointed with early NES games (only in retrospect). However my first disappointment came from a Sierra PC release from 1985 called The Black Cauldron based on the cartoon (based on the novel). Not only was the cartoon a far cry from the novel, but the game didn’t seem beatable. I finally found out last year how to get the optimal ending for the game... I love the discussion! Merry Christmas, man! And happy G3 New Year!
awesome video tyler, very good point especially mario is missing lol Also the controller at the end. It acted like u didnt even need the controller lol. ( uforce)
The TV Tuner worked fine. You were either in a bad area, or did not have strong TV signals nearby. A buddy of mine had the GG and TV Tuner; I had a Gameboy. After school, we would trade and play the other's console. One time, I tried the TV Tuner and watched the Jetsons. It came in perfectly.
My most devastating moment - it was the day after Christmas, maybe 1987/1988. I had returned something to Kay-B Toys, and I saw this gorgeous box art for Deadly Towers from behind the counter. I bought it right away, sight unseen. Got it home and the game was utter crap. Confusing mazes, the most blocky, chunky, plodding character imaginable, etc. I just envisioned that this game was going to be the most amazing RPG ever (yeah I'm one of those "RPG Guys" :-)). I did finish this game on my own by discovering some things completely by accident a couple of years later though. Honorable mention for Atari 2600 pac-man. I too loved the Arcade Pac-Man and when I powered this on the disappointment was painful. The ghosts weren't even different colors!
Sega TV! Had all theses games but only a few would actually play. Still enjoyed myself. But could remember sitting in front of the tv for hrs trying to play certain games.
Love the video! I was also a Sega kid growing up, so the Genesis (Sega TV 😂) changed video games for me. Have you done a Top 10 Fave Sega Games? That would probably be an interesting list 🤯
First of all great timing I just got set down on my lunch hour pulled up UA-cam an you just uploaded an secondly you were born in 82?...that was a good year to be born indeed
Double Dragon 3 in the arcade really pissed me off. It changed the format and graphics of the first two side scrolling gems of DD 1 & DD2. MOST DISPLEASING.
That is no lie. I was tricked by box art all the time as a kid, especially in the 2600 days. Atleast by middle of the NES lifespan, we had Nintendo Power to help protect us from box art deception but, even then some duds would sneak through
I was VERY surprised to see you and I have the same #1 disappointment. I think it may have actually been the greatest disappointment of my childhood. Christmas 1993 when I was seven years old getting the activator...man, I had dreams about that thing! I had a popcorn stucco ceiling, so we tried hanging a white bedsheet up there to reflect the beams. Let's just say the sheet stayed up there longer than the activator stayed out of the junk closet.
Mine is related to one of your picks but has extra disappointment attached- I asked for an NES Advantage joystick and my dad found that they didn't have any at the store he went to, but the guy there apparently said "hey, we have this other new controller you might like instead." And so, my dad came home with the U-Force. Didn't take long before he took it back for a refund.
Oh man, the Sirrus/Achenar thing genuinely disturbed me when I was playing Myst as a middle schooler. I too eventually made use of the strategy guide and then felt incredibly dumb for not figuring out that ending myself....
Game rentals need to be #1, those were constant and left me sooooo pissed. Biggest disappointment at a rental store was The Uncanny X-Men. What an 8-bit turd!!!
I too was (and still am) an Orlando Magic NBA Jam aficionado. There was nothing like draining threes from the top of the screen with Shaq in the arcade, and while I love all forms of the home NBA jam franchise, the missing Big Aristotle was a disappointing omission. Spot on!!
I remember playing Myst back in the early 90’s, I got stuck after 2 hours and turned it off lol....My biggest disappointment in gaming was playing any game on the N Gage, I bought it on release and was blown away by all the features. Sadly gaming on it was horrible, I tried to play Sonic and Red Faction on it and was confused to why the graphics where so weak. Once again you’ve outdone yourself with this video, please don’t stop working hard and I’m hoping to see a ton of content from you in 2019
Dude I never had an Ngage but I have heard nothing but horror stories lol. Having a sonic game on there did get me intrigued but I never pulled the trigger.
The tv tunner for the game gear worked fine here until recently, I live in Portugal. A few years ago all the analog signals were shut down, still didn't try but I guess it will not work anymore unfortunately, unless I could connect it to digital signal
I'm totally with you on the Game Boy Color. I was so mad when I turned it on and it was still not backlit. I didnt care as much about battery life as I did performance and the Game Gear blew every 90s incarnation of Game Boy out of the water.
Well I just wanted to say that this is a great channel....thanks for being back memories i miss.... and thanks for reminding how bad I hated some of the games we grew up with lol 😂

Mario is Missing, I fell for that one. Your description of it being click bait, 1993 style is spot-on!
The Lynx came out before Game Gear and Game Boy. I love it and still play with it often. The games are great too.
Hunger for Horror I also love my model 2 Atari Lynx I used to have a model 1 but now I have a model 2 Lynx
No the Lynx did not come out before the Gameboy. It came out after but is the 1st color portable. Yeah it is pretty decent but I still got a Game Gear and Gameboy before I got it.
FYI I am in America so perhaps I am wrong if you are from another country
Nah you're probably right I was going off my memory which isn't what it used to be
@@hungerforhorror well sorry if I made you feel bad. My memory isn't as sharp lately either . Just hoping I start forgetting more that I wish I could forget and less of which I can't
I love your vids man ...good job
I had a Sega CD growing up, but my parents swerved through the good games and instead got a bunch of those crappy FMV games like Sewer Shark. I did have Sonic CD, but that was it.
I love sonic CD and the cheesy FMV games lol. I love the cinematic part of it but I can see where it would annoy people too.
Dude I actually have a copy of ground zero Texas a few months back after a friend recommended it. I need to try it out. Thanks for reminding me
Sonic CD had a kick ass opening segment video and music but.. the gameplay itself was just another sonic game and that's fine if you like Sonic.. but still.
@@xenxander Eh, better than a lot of the Sonic games we're stuck with today. And back before it was flooded with useless side characters.
Love your work sir. You really are great at what you do we are lucky to have you on UA-cam :)
Ricky my man! Great to hear from you. Thanks so much man. Really means a lot to me. Love your streams too
I will stop by soon! Happy holidays!!!
Mario Is Missing hits home for me. I rented it one night based on the box art on the back. I got conned.
You really summed up that experience being tricked into renting this turd nicely.
Great video as always brother.
Thanks again for the entertainment man. Was a great video as always.happy holiday to you and your family dude.
Happy holidays to you and your family as well William. Always great to hear from you man.
NBA jam was good on super nes
Love love love it as always
Awesome man! Thanks for the support as always my NES brother!
Thanks for the kind words man. Glad you enjoy the videos 🙏
Those commercials, though. Classic. Thank you for the memories!
Man. I always wanted that Game Gear TV tuner. But if it wasn’t good then I don’t have to feel bad. Thanks and great video.
I do like the 32X though.
I dodged almost all that gimicks and man am i thankful. Great vid.
Shaq behind that tree had me dyin omg.
Rewatching these videos and my gosh, I forgot how much I freaking love this channel 🤍
You mean you didnt play as Bob Dole in NBA Jam!? Haha great moments man. I dont think I've even heard of some of these Sega add-ons
Great video. There were a couple I hadnt heard of. And mullet boy is an awesome idea!
Thanks David. I hope people find mullet boy fun lol.
If I remember correctly, Mario is Missing was Daisy's secret video game appearance. It was well defined in the SNES port even though the coloring of Daisy was the same as the title screen of NES Tournament Golf.
A well deserved like and sub here. Great content. Need more !
Thanks so much! Welcome to G3!!!
I love this video, I just had to watch it again tonight (along with a few others I’ve watched a few times already). I hope everything is good for you and your family Tyler. Be good my friend. R
Reagan it means a lot that you truly enjoy to rewatch my videos. We are doing well and I hope you have been too. Talk to you later buddy.
Great video! Loved it!
Cool vid... Oddly enough when u mentioned about how bad ET was on Atari... I was watching the Goldbergs episode where they referenced that particular game in the story...
My biggest disapointment in mid 90´s? The "classic" known as Contra Force
You had to wait 25 years, Tyler, but you finally have Shaq ...everywhere!! 😏
I don’t recall being too disappointed with early NES games (only in retrospect).
Well done video. Brought back some memories for me as well. I am 42 years old as of 2020
Thanks Joshua! Glad you enjoyed it and it brought back some good times 🙏
Dude nice vid! I can’t agree with the nba jam one tho cause I never played the arcade version
awesome video tyler, very good point especially mario is missing lol Also the controller at the end. It acted like u didnt even need the controller lol. ( uforce)
Thanks man. Yeah the uforce sits on a throne of lies!!!!
Browser's lives in a castle full of lava and breathes fire, but ...but he needs hair dryers to melt ice. Brah! ❄️🔥🦖
Very entertaining. Keep it up!
that was a spectacular mullet LOL!
The Mullet Boy is an interesting, fun and unique idea. I've seen it done in magazines, but never videos. Kudos for the creativity.
Thanks so much. I thought of it while editing our last video and wanted to introduce it in this one. I hope everyone has fun with it.
Yep born in 82 Jim. Great year for sure. Hope you enjoyed the video man.
Double Dragon 3 in the arcade really pissed me off. It changed the format and graphics of the first two side scrolling gems of DD 1 & DD2. MOST DISPLEASING.
Oh man I remember some doozies from back in the day! The problem was when box art looked amazing but the game was nothing like it!!
I think mine was either playing Taboo: The sixth sense, or renting Rise of the Robots
I had a 32x too. Simular note i loved my Turbographix16 but i still dont know what the turbo booster add on for it actually did
Oh man, the Sirrus/Achenar thing genuinely disturbed me when I was playing Myst as a middle schooler.
Enjoy your videos. So far I have to agree with you on how some of these were just life lessons waiting to happen. Cheers, -J.O.
Yes these moments definitely help build character lol. Thanks for taking time to comment!
Love this channel
I too was (and still am) an Orlando Magic NBA Jam aficionado. There was nothing like draining threes from the top of the screen with Shaq in the arcade, and while I love all forms of the home NBA jam franchise, the missing Big Aristotle was a disappointing omission. Spot on!!
Great video bro
For the record, the TV tuner worked amazingly well for me.
The tv tunner for the game gear worked fine here until recently, I live in Portugal. A few years ago all the analog signals were shut down, still didn't try but I guess it will not work anymore unfortunately, unless I could connect it to digital signal
Hope all is well with you. Sure miss the videos. Good luck to you my friend.
I'm totally with you on the Game Boy Color. I was so mad when I turned it on and it was still not backlit. I didnt care as much about battery life as I did performance and the Game Gear blew every 90s incarnation of Game Boy out of the water.
I love your accent so damn much, I just can't tell you. Subbed.
Great video! I agree with your video/picks.
Thanks Linda! I always appreciate you taking time to comment
I definitely got duped on the Mario missing game and this brought back that exact memory of how mad I was after 5 mins into the game lol.
Well I just wanted to say that this is a great channel....thanks for being back memories i miss.... and thanks for reminding how bad I hated some of the games we grew up with lol 😂
Thanks for the kind words about the channel and I am glad you are enjoying the videos. Really appreciate you taking time to comment man.
