    Imagine being the average person living in the Empire around the area of that battle. You hear rumors about a small force of horse archers riding around. One hundred and fifty men March out to meet them. You never see them again. One Khuzait rider is seen leaving the field. He is riddled with arrows and covered in blood. He is smiling. Rumors would spread about some sort of monster or demon sent to punish the land.

    Simo, I have a suggestion for horse archer combat! Try to divide your horse archers into two separate formations and flank the enemy with them. They can't block from all directions now, can they?

      if you mix regular archers and horse archers this also works, but you then have a dismounted force should you need them. the noble Kazuits are good enough on foot to be a good dismounted force, but the Aseri and Empire horse archers have a shield (depending on the version you are playing) which makes a huge difference in some battles/situations.

    • @GilV4lentine
      @GilV4lentine Рік тому +2

      @@jamoecw Agreed, and the tier 5 aserai horse archers also have better arrows, but the Khuzait have more in total. But for a horse archer only playthrough, I think this would be the best tactic, without mixing troops.
      If we did mix troops then I think some high level infantry with shields could work to bait the enemy while the horse archers attack from behind.

      that gets really boring. the AI is too stupid for this to feel like a good tactic. it's too easy to park one formation behind the enemy formation as they mindlessly march towards your other formation. the AI completely breaks down when they get surrounded like this and they just shuffle back and forth until they're all dead. it's cool to do the first couple times but it strips all challenge from the battles.

    Fought an Army that had 144 Horse Archers in it, while I had just 1 cavalry, my character's spouse. Ya I'm an Infantry focused person. Had like 147 Veteran/Legionary Imperial Infantry, and 97 Archers. They had like 770 men in total. What scared me was a lot of it was cavalry as the 144 aforementioned horse archers. Only reason they didn't have more was because a lot of them had fresh recruits apparently but... still huge army. Luckily I was sieging along the coast line and the coast line was crested by cliffs, and a few narrow passages leading down to the beach. So I took the only reasonable decision I could, made a shield wall at the entrance to the beach with archers spread out across it. It was the most lop sided battle I've ever had on mount and blade bannerlord. I suffered 8 deaths, and like 14 wounded, their whole army was pretty much annihilated. What struck me the most was all the cavalry got stuck at the crest of the cliffs, ie they didn't charge down into the death trap as I planned. But once the infantry were wiped out, my infantry pushed up, they kind of did a bull horn effect and circled around the cavalry camping the cliff. Why they didn't run away is beyond me. I think because the main Army "was" there, the cavalry remained there as well... instead of retreating to another location.
    However I do have the Medical Branch maxed out on that character so my infantry have a pretty good HP boost.

      yeah, people saying how OP horse archers are, and in the right circumstance this is correct, but in the wrong one they get killed pretty easily. this is mostly due to the AI taking fights it shouldn't and using horse archers recklessly.

  • @crazybananaman1
    @crazybananaman1 Рік тому +54

    The most overpowered strategy of the real Mongols was the feigned retreat, where they would pretend like they were losing and bait the enemy into chasing them, then turning around and destroying them. It was so OP that there was literally a monk (I forget his name) at one time who just ran around Europe telling rulers not to fall for the trap because it was killing so many people.
    You can do this in Bannerlord if you have a small group of elite infantry, and then rest of your army is horse archers, like 15% infantry, 85% horse archers. You basically just have your infantry attack enemy infantry in shieldwall, run horse archers behind the enemy, and then tell your infantry to retreat in line or loose formation, regroup, and repeat.
    When the enemy infantry starts chasing your infantry, you just shoot them in their asses. When they're chasing, their formation gets messed up and you can pepper the shit out of them. Telling your horse archers to hold fire makes them take out melee weapons, so you can charge enemy archers or cavalry with them as well. You're basically prepared for anything at that point; the only weakness is to a full Khuzait army is sieges. Historically the Mongols weren't super great at sieges either, so they would just terrorize the countryside or starve the enemy out.

    • @jamoecw
      @jamoecw Рік тому +9

      yeah, getting the AI to do some stuff like this would be really cool and make the different mix of troops in the troop trees really shine. right now the AI tries for the same mix of units and the same tactics, generally speaking, so one sort of tactic and mix of troops works in nearly all situations right now once you get the nuances down.

      @@mihailmilev9909 super advanced AIs are specialized towards whatever they are used for. if you just plop the AI into Bannerlord they will fail the same or worse than the existing AI. the newest type of AI (neural network) that people are hyped about need a ton of repetition since it is basically an AI that builds and AI through trial and error. something tailored to Bannerlord that remembers things you did and does them itself across multiple playthroughs would be neat, but might lose some of the nuance to make it work (which wouldn't make it worse than it is now). a lot of newer strategy games are starting to do this and it would be pretty cool for Bannerlord to do as well.

    • @jamoecw
      @jamoecw Рік тому +1

      being on a horse incurs an accuracy penalty, and moving incurs a further penalty. so even standing still horse archers are less lethal arrow for arrow, but they are hit far less often which more than makes up for it usually. using them as an extra mobile archer force can help quite a bit at low levels, but you should expect to have to micro them to really get good use out of them at low levels, using them to flank the enemy while another force distracts, or to use them as a distraction while your archers go to town on the enemy. since they can't get ridden down they do much better against other cav compared to other high level archers, which makes them keep the same dynamic of being more likely to survive even at higher levels while doing less damage (at least with their arrows, once they get good at riding down the enemy they will do more damage overall than high level archers). given that only kazuits have low level horse archers, and that low level archers tend to need several arrows to kill an enemy that means that you really do need high level horse archers to really make them worth it, but that means that you need to pay a lot for your force and avoid bad battles that will kill lots of your troops as they will take time to train new ones up.

    Ransoming lords through the ransom all button, I noticed, seems to not pay you their ransom (you got 1.5k when the projected profit was 4k at around 6:28). Doing it through choosing the prisoners to ransom seems to work fine in my experience.

  • @jamoecw
    @jamoecw Рік тому +1

    i created a 400 man horse archer army. tell them to follow you and manually circle the enemy, going slow enough to keep them on you. the AI tends to charge at the worst times, so you lose too many if you just tell them to do their thing. as long as your troops don't run out of arrows you will win if you can keep them out of melee. so 2 to 1 should be able to winnable, or more if you retreat when out of arrows. of course if you get caught in a pass then you might only be able to handle 1 to 1 if they have the right troops to counter you. most casualties will come from Aseri with their light cavalry with javelins. a mix of crossbows and archers which the Empire does results in a good separation of ranged troops, so if you keep at long range of the archers and circle you will kill the crossbows and cavalry by the time the archers out of arrows, wasting them with low odds of hitting your troops. many of the shock troops will be dead as well, though their shielded troops will help keep them alive. if the enemy is not too large then you will have enough arrows to station your troops on one side as you get the infantry to turn towards you, or vice versa resulting in good casualties on the shielded infantry. after that they should be dead enough to ride them down.
    maps that are small with large battles, or canyon battles will result in the horse archers being slightly worse than an all archer army versus infantry, and slightly better than an all archer army versus cavalry. given that the AI always mixes its troops this is how you end up with only being as good as 1 to 1 (an all infantry army of infantry should defeat you if matched 1 to 1). so an all horse archer army is OP if you pick the right battle fields, which your speed should be good enough to ensure. getting an all horse archer army is only possible with Kazuits, Aseri, and Empire, and then only really feasible for conquering the map with just your party and maintaining a full 400 man army with the kazuits since they have both a noble line and a standard line of horse archers, with the standard line starting early enough to not have to train them to high levels to start using them as horse archers (which if you are baby sitting the horse archers then you would have trouble leading your non horse archers since they don't play well with others).
    of course all of this is with standard AI with you with the horse archers. some small clans will have mostly or all horse archer parties in small numbers, and when used correctly strugia and Aseria are both good at countering them without much or any change in composition from a normal mix of troops. this means that horse archers are OP due to the AI not being good at countering them rather than being OP in of themselves.

Having a percentage of your force, say 20-30 percent being horse archers and the rest being heavy cav is probably the most efficient use of your troop limit outside of cheesing fights with battatian noble archers.

    I normally love your videos, they're quite entertaining. However, saying horse archers aren't overpowered, when you stand still with them, attempting to beat a foot troop army is never going to work.
    Toe to toe, archer vs horse archer while standing still: archer should win every time & in a situation like this, with an imperial shielded line in front of it, they will win.
    You have superior mobility & that's what you should be using. You can use it in multiple ways:
    Drawing the infantry line away from the archers & then circling around them & charging the foot archers to engage in melee. Withdrawing when the infantry line is closing in & repeating the process till the archers are dead.
    Then using your arrows on the infantry, & as someone else mentioned: splitting into multiple groups for this, as the shields can only block one direction.
    Hopefully you try it again, with tactics designed for horse archers. It'll yield greater results & be far more enjoyable 👍
