BMW E30 Gas Tank Restoration | Steel Fuel Tank Refurbishment | 010
Following the removal of the E30 gas tank in my previous video, it's time to start my BMW E30 gas tank restoration.

The petrol tank the E30 uses pre-dates plastic fuel tanks appearing on BMW models, it's an old school metal fuel tank made from steel. This is both good and bad news really. Bad because they can rust and get pinholes or other damage, good because working with metal tanks can be easier than working with plastic tanks, and they are more easily repaired if they have holes.
As I keep mentioning, the condition of my BMW E30 fuel tank seems pretty good, despite the scruffy outward appearance. There is a bit of rust to contend with, but generally, it's around the edges, outside of the sealed area that holds the petrol.
In this video, I get the E30s fuel tank cleaned up with a degreaser and a pressure washer, stripped down including the fuel level sender and pump, and then de-rusted with a wire brush and sandpaper.
Following this, I move on to getting the tank in primer. Before I eventually notice there's a tiny hole in the fuel tank! Fixing that will certainly be my next challenge.
