@azul8811 No public sector job should have the ability to negotiate their own wages without direct negotiation with the individuals paying the wages (tax payers).
There is currently no proper adversarial structure built between public sector unions and the boards/commissions/etc. that they "negotiate" with.
Health and safety standards are another matter.

I began working when I was 12. I quickly learned the better I worked the more hours I got. When my employer retired late 70’s and I worked with others of different ages in different environments the consensus was Union, Federal, State, Civil Service jobs were the right way to go. When pressed why the largest response was because they can’t fire you. I learned at a young age that hard and good work was rewarded but couldn’t wrap my mind around getting a job because I couldn’t get fired. Granted I was poor and get job stability but at that young age I knew I wasn’t entitled to a job if I did earn my keep.
Entitlement is an insidious mindset, it hobbles many and crippled others.

I’ll likely be a NJ teacher when I finish my degree and I’m joining as soon as I can. The benefits of union protection work to keep good teachers from being exploited and I’ve seen it numerous times from my former building rep.
I was out of the union for two years when I moved to a different teacher’s aide position at my job. This was a job where we were doing legal restraints on kids with behavior difficulties and dealing with kids who couldn’t succeed in a typical classroom. I don’t want to be in that position ever again, as I’ve seen parents riled up over the lies their kids tell about their treatment and wouldn’t want to defend against that alone. I don’t agree with the union’s voting power or their policies on the Coof in 2020-2021, so I think there should be competing unions to offset this.

I think you will find that that same union protects crappy teachers who aren't doing their jobs by any standard. If you are a really great teacher you will not be rewarded with better pay or benefits, and may even lose your job to that crappy teacher simply due to seniority. The trade-offs for allowing the NJEA to more or less run the schools because of their numbers and political clout has hurt the students most of all, while the purpose of school is entirely about the students.

Having been both a public employee union member, as well as a contractor for government, I'm very familiar with the problems Howard is talking about. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to realize that the problems stem from the incentives facing politicians, union members and their representatives. All spelled out in the Public Choice literature. Of which, Thomas Sowell's 'Knowledge and Decisions' (which Glenn says he has read) being an outstanding explication.
I also noticed that Mitch Daniels wrote a forward to Howard's book. The former Governor of Indiana would be a good follow-up guest on this topic.

I used to have his views on vaccines until the institutions started labeling things that were not functionally vaccines as vaccines. For laws to be legitimate & enforceable by institutions, they should be rational & logical. There is nothing rational or logical about enforcing the taking of a vaccine that doesn't protect the individual unless every other person takes it. This is evident in the fact that there are several vaccines that are merely recommended but not required. That's because those vaccines protect the individual, but have no demonstrable evidence of protecting the population.

Naturally everyday folks turn on each other. Americans suffer an onslaught of misinformation in the form of rumors, gossip and innuendo. That coupled with corporate media keeps the misinformation and distortion alive.

I’m a consultant on EPA regulation regarding stormwater on construction sites. The primary cause of violation is not pollution, but not keeping long term records of every little thing. The amount of server space that my company keeps for our clients long term training records is astounding. Records that are often pencil whipped, that cause untold numbers of lost man hours, and such that literally add almost nothing when it comes to actual safety, but is only done to comply with mandated regulation that is so blatantly intuitive it boggles the mind.

    • @DeadlyPlatypus
      @DeadlyPlatypus 6 місяців тому +1

Correct. I've argued with the "unionists" that (for instance) teachers' unions should have to directly negotiate with the parents/taxpayers they serve. They always say: "electing the school board IS your negotiation," however they refuse to acknowledge that the EXACT same principle applies to THEM. If the "customers'" interests are being properly represented by the schoolboard and local government, then so are the teachers. If the teachers' aren't, then neither are the customers.

In the Federal Government, one of the Union’s main functions is to protect poor performers from getting fired. Federal Unions have enormous power and use their own lawyers to prevent managers from firing poor performers.
I am OK with unions protecting workers from abusive management (and there are bad managers), but far too much of their time is spent protecting poor performers.

  • @gitchermotrrunnin
    @gitchermotrrunnin 6 місяців тому +2

The guy sounds half baked to me. Some of his points are valid, but he is no Thomas Sowell. I've dealt with a "public" employee union both as a member and as a representative. I also went into supervison, having to deal with the union from the other side. Was the union needed? My particular agency, NYCTransit, began as privately owned companies and the union stayed on when the City took over. As a revenue producing agency, the taxpayer is not the sole source of funding. But having so many skills involved, dangerous conditions and occasional abusive practices of management, the union has a place in my opinion.
I found as a union rep that a lot of resources was spent on keeping the jobs of employees chronically getting written up. A few times I felt bad that the agency could not fire unproductive employees who only increased the work of those employees who did their jobs. As far as the example Howard gives about the MTA track crew that would not cut the tree limb in the way, there are pros and cons to that. As an example, when I was in supervision, had trouble getting my employees to do a job that involved cleaning/mopping. They claimed it was out of "title". It was stupid, the skill sets involved was not beyond them. On the other hand employees without the training or skills attempting to do jobs that are specialized just to please the boss can be dangerous to themselves and the public. Howards argument is not a one size fits all.
In the department I worked in the wage scale for comparable work for private companies was higher, even at the laborer level. The difference is that Transit employees are not let go at the end of a job. Having gone to the burn unit to visit a fellow employee permanently disabled, burned from a third rail explosion, at least one funeral and an inquiry of the death(hit by a train) of someone I worked with, I have little regard for haters. Let them come down on the tracks to keep the city running. My two cents.

One glaring omission from this discussion of public sector unions is whether labor relations are subject to binding interest arbitration. Cannot discuss the issue without separating unions based on this concept. Second, management sometimes fails to hold workers accountable due to incompetence. They are not trained or skilled at documentation, coaching, performance management, corrective discipline. There are union excesses but these two talk about PS unions and leave a lot of critical issues off the table.

Two points: the trust problem and the lack of agency has been exacerbated by the plaintiff bar, which has flooded legislation and regulation with features that encourage baseless and vexatious lawsuits. There was some mention of the malpractice problem, but it's a much bigger issue than that. And second: Citizens.councils, really? If that trash is not specifically on your property's front lawn, but in the street instead, its not getting picked up, despite the fact that your property is within a community which you want to be nice. The public jobs have so much more protection. Everyday you needed to be at the top of your game, as every second of my day for the past 10 years have been timed and scored. I try to explain this to my other family members who have always worked in education or for an academic institution and they think I'm nuts. It was better working for larger highly regulated financial institutions but the mortgage industry became unstable after the bank bailouts of 2008 (we lost over 380 lenders and NO ONE WENT TO JAIL creating huge moral hazard). The difference between public and commercial unions is that the power of commercial unions is kept in check by market forces. If they make their employers too inefficient, or degrade quality too much, the companies go out of business, the union members lose their jobs, and another more efficient company fills the void.
Public sector unions have no such market force constraints imposed upon them since the government uses guns to ensure that you pay for their "services", no matter how inefficient.

The problem is that the private sector unions don't really care if they end up destroying the companies their members work for.
Just look at the UAW. They destroyed Detroit, got countless jobs off-shored, drove multiple companies into bankruptcy and never admitted that PART of what caused that was lobbying for guys who push buttons on the production floor to be paid $30+ per hour. They always turn around and blame "capitalism" and "greedy CEOs" while ignoring their own greed and manipulation of the market through ridiculous levels of government deferrence.

Australia here. As someone who worked for the railway for years i can honestly tell you that the unions definitely need to go. They had created such a toxic, unproductive and combative culture by the time i left that the only people who stayed were the ones who remained were those two incompetent and lazy to get employment anywhere else. Cost the tax payer millions of dollars for chronically late trains, and over priced tickets.

I had thought that In the beginning unions were necessary to counter companies who abused their employees - then some people (like Emma Goldman) thought it was a good idea to advocate for higher wages and whatnot. This went too far, now we have teachers' unions thinking it's okay to teach adult-themed material to children and their parents have to accept it.

In our efforts to ensure equality for all, we have used laws and compliance to those laws, to adjust for the fact that common sense and abilities are not dispersed equally within the population. I live in Canada and do not recall the last time a politician ran on being fiscally responsible in any level of government. Only more compliance and bureaucracy in order to level the playing field, and make us all feel good about being mediocre.

I understand there is good and bad with unions. Coming from a public safety point of view, it would be almost impossible to recruit and retain for police / fire / ems. Many metro area public safety departments are overworked and underpaid, especially after Bidens America. People also should realize the Union contracts is what helps with pay, equipment, training, retirement etc. but also for public safety at least the “no strike” clause. Most people have very little knowledge of the “good” unions do. And media to easily can make your avg firefighter/ police / etc look like a lazy thief. I know this after taking pay cuts, insurance hikes, and finally cutting or stealing our pensions. That’s when many quit!

I had an issue, the firm owed me money, The union
took up the issue and they had a meeting with management,
The union came back and said you are right they owe you money
but if we force them to pay you they have said they will implement
a previous pay agreement we have but they haven't implemented,
So we are not going to take your case further because they would
implement the rule that WE had agreed to..

If unions for government employees worked perfectly , the existence of them wouldstill be wrong, and should be unlawful.
No organization should stand between public workers and the people that fund their operations.
If the money is taken forcefully, ostensibly for the public good, the taxpayers should have direct control through election of the managers.
For example, property owners typically fund ....pay the salaries.....of teachers. Property taxpayers should have the power to fire any teacher by majority vote.

This guy seems incredibly naive about how corporations behave. A general rule that the employer should supply appropriate personal protective equipment was not enough for concrete cutting companies to supply workers with respirators to prevent silicosis, a deadly lung disease. It’s took like a decade of work to get a specific rule because of industry opposition. Corporations won’t comply with general rules. They will just sue the agency for every penalty issued.
