I wandered today to the hills, Maggie
To watch the scene below
The creek and the creaking old mill, Maggie
Where we used to long, long ago
The green growth is gone from the hills, Maggie
Where first the daisies spring
And the creaking old mill is still, Maggie
Since you and I were young
They say I'm feeble with age, Maggie
My steps are less sprighty than then
My face is a well written page, Maggie
But time along was the pen
They say we are aged and grey, Maggie
As spray by the white breakers flung
But to me, you're as fair as you were, Maggie
When you and I were young
And now we are aged and grey, Maggie
The trials of life nearly done
Let us sing of the days that are gone, Maggie
When you and I were young
I miss songs of sentiment.
i REMEMBER THIS 70 YEARS AGO. My dad used to sing it to me. still one of the best. Written in Kitchener Ontario Canada I believe.
Just read your text, God bless you sweetheart, x.. god bless you.....
Beautiful, this is where it all STARTED, I wander today to the hills Maggie, is how we sing it. Welcome to the next 100 yrs,.CLASSIC....
I heard this song in Casa Amor
I first listened to John McCormack sing this on a beautifully reproduced "Angle Records" 78 rpm like the one in the photo. It is no wonder he achieved a level of success in America that could be compared to the Beatles some 45 years later.
excellent old irish tune. ever read Stephen Crane's 'Maggie girl of the streets'? i think of it when i hear this. idk why - theyr completely opposite n content, except for the name Maggie. anyway, great novella and a great song..!
