Why are my outdoor outlets not working?

- GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) Trip:
The primary reason outdoor outlets might not work is due to a GFI that controls the outdoor plug, which is typically located inside the garage.
The GFI might trip, especially if there's no seal around the outdoor plug. Without a seal, water can easily enter the outlet, causing the GFI to trip.
Location of the GFI:
Many people might not be aware that their GFI has tripped because it's often hidden or buried inside the garage.
In the video, the presenter's GFI is located behind various equipment, tools, and storage items. This might be a common scenario for many homeowners.
GFIs can be identified by their "test" and "reset" buttons. In some homes, the GFI controlling outdoor plugs might be located behind items like a refrigerator, shelves, or stacks of boxes.
Resetting the GFI:
If the GFI has tripped, the top button (usually the "test" button) will be extended out.
To restore power to the outdoor outlet, you need to push the "reset" button on the GFI until you feel a solid click.
External Factors:
Another reason for a GFI trip or non-functioning outdoor outlets is if something is plugged into the outlet, and the other end of the cord is exposed to water, such as being in a puddle or getting wet from sprinklers.
Additionally, if an item is plugged into the outdoor outlet, the protective door of the outlet remains open. This open door doesn't prevent water from entering, especially during rain or when sprinklers are active. This can also cause the GFI to trip.
In conclusion, if your outdoor outlets are not working, it's essential to check the GFI inside your garage and ensure that the outdoor outlets are protected from water ingress.

Outdoor patio fan and outdoor outlets not working

We never had a sprinkler system in 22 yrs, till now Our sprinkler system came on the other night at our new house and our garage door and front porch and back patio outlets where the Christmas lights quit working. We tried everything... un-plugging and plugging everything back in, turning everything in breaker box on and off, checked to see if there was GFI in outdoor ouets.. there was not...nothing worked. Thanks for this video. YOU SAVED CHRISTMAS FOR THE KIDS...HAHA...I never thought to look for GFI in garage, but it worked!!!

Very Grateful for this video. The key info is ALL outdoor outlets are controlled by a GFCI outlet IN GARAGE. All of my outdoor outlets were not working as water splashed into an outlet (conneted to the grill) in the backyard.
I used a Kobalt Receptacle Tester (which worked fine for my bathrooms to trip in the past) but it didn't fix the issue.
Once saw this video, went to the garage and found the GFCI outlet with the YELLOW BUTTON LIT (AC and water timer outlets in garage were working fine). Pressed the yellow button and all outlets work now like magic!! Thanks again.

Tried using my outlets outside to power stair LEDs and they wouldn’t turn on. Found the GFI in my closet in the hallway that has the water heater because of this video

This just happen to me this year with my lights outside, they stopped working. I never knew until this video it could be on the same outlet GFCI in the bathroom. so this saved me from getting an electrician. way cool.

Worked!! Fyi for anyone having the same problem. I couldn't find an outlet in my garage ( or anywhere else in the house) that had the reset button besides my bathroom. Pushed it and it worked!

Yea, thanks for this. All of the GFI next to the outdoor outlets were not tripped and ALL of the outdoor outlets all around the house were not working. I went to every GFI in the house and they were not tripped. Watched this video and was reminded, doh! there is a GFI in the garage. Boom. there it is.

You saved me! I live in a 1 bed apartment. No garage obviously and the outlet behind my fridge has no reset trip button. BUT, my hallway outlet does have it, which is funny cause its located directly below the fuse box. LOL Its the only outlet in the apartment with a reset/test buttons. Reset.. click sound.. outside outlets work! Tytytyty FYI, Building maintenance man sucks, said it wasnt their problem, re-read my lease and i needed to pay for a professional to come out to fix it.

Thanks! Our GFI for this circuit was of course in the garage. I was thinking I’d have to remove tons of shelves and boxes looking for it, but then I remembered we used to have a freezer in our garage and that plug was behind only a few things. Boom - fixed!

I was able to find mine in a storeroom outside my house and has a water heater in it. I was trying out various gfci outlets in my house until I found this in my utility room outside :)

@@janellechase7407 That's a good question. I did not test the outlet when it was tripped. We are having a wiring problem in general in this house. It appears the two upstairs bathrooms and one of the outdoor outlets are connected to that GFI/GFCI. It goes out almost every day, and we have no idea why. The outlets indoors are not getting wet. The outdoor main circuit breaker is not perturbed. So far we have found 3 GFI's (two in the house and one hidden in the outdoor BBQ island). It will likely go out again soon, so I will update you. All I know is the lights were working in the bathrooms, and only the outlets were affected. It's possible if it's a GFI issue that one may be hidden somewhere. We had to move the outdoor refrigerator to find that third GFI. So far I have not located one in the garage, but we still have a lot of boxes stacked up.
@@janellechase7407 Also, did you test and reset (meaning you heard the click and you pressed the button in again)? It seems to be standard practice that several outlets can be connected to a single GFI switch. My neighbor is an electrician. If I see him I will ask him about this.

Watched 3 "PRO" Journeyman Elertrician videos all jump straight to Bad Breakers, testing breakers, and bad outlet., I have even paid a Home Warranty Handyman $75 to push the reset on a GIF I had no Idea where it was, and If I didn't I would have any idea what it was for (the outlet). You are on it!! Really seriously GFI Floor board height, w ifes closet behind her shoes. Jacuzzi tub GIF. I panited it red, added a "post it" not to the access panel in guest bedroom closet where the Jacuzzi pump actually is. 1 GIF knocked out half the house GFI hidden in a closet for a Jacuzzi tub in Master bath, and pump.and access to it are in another bathroom?! Holy crap! Found it, patients prevails! Thank you SO much.

This worked for us as well! The outdoor outlet had no power and we dint knw what was the reason. Googled and found this video. Went to the garage and saw a switch with the surge button and it worked. Thank you for making this video and sharing with all... saved us alot of money ✨🙏🏻

My outdoor outlet stopped working after I accidentally sliced my lawn mower extension cord in half. I flipped all the breakers, I reset 2 GFCIs in the garage and one in the kitchen and still no power outside. Was about to call it quits when I went in the guest bathroom and found another GFCI outlet by chance. Now I got working outlets! Thanks a lot man.

thank you very much. you saved me panic. I used an Electric Charcoal Starter to turn on Barbeque grill, but I think we left it longer than we should. Then, all of sudden it turn off all the power outlets outside the house and inside my garage. After learning to reset, it worked great and now everything is ok. thank you so much. Very helpful video.

My water pump for my pool stop working in the back yard. I went into the garage and reset it. Boom! Everything is back on. I notice one of the outlets gets sprayed by the sprinklers and might of caused the the issue.

I have 2 GFI outlets inside... didn’t work. Didn’t realize I had one in the garage. I had to press The bottom one first then the top. Wouldn’t think to check the garage. Thank you!!! The GFI was located right behind the refrigerator ~ I was able to peek behind the fridge and saw the little button and just pushed it in (thank goodness I have skinny arms 'cause I didn't have to move the fridge, lol!
