Thanks Mari 🥹 Hope you enjoy Madam/Miso Soup if you decide to pick them up! 💙 and you have to help me spread the Vladimir agenda since you enjoyed it too lol
Thank you for more recommendations! I read Vladimir - after watching your Literary fiction video - and it was one of the best books I've read this year, you really should keep recommending it! Also read Exciting Times upon your recommendation, and I wouldn't say that Naoise Dolan is like Sally Rooney (mostly because I did not enjoy Rooney much and I very much enjoyed everything Dolan has written), but I would recommend her sophomore novel, The Happy Couple, as well!
I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed Vladimir and Exciting Times!! 💖 I read The Happy Couple recently and I didn’t enjoy it anywhere near as much as Exciting Times.. I was super sad about it!! I had even preordered a signed edition of it. I will still continue reading whatever she puts out though because of how much I loved ET!
@@ExLibrisKari Ah, a signed edition - the dream! Yeah, The Happy Couple is somewhat different from Exciting Times. Tbh, I kinda disliked the first 30% of The Happy Couple, but then something clicked, and I ended up loving it Anyhow, I'll be eagerly looking forward to more recommendation videos from you! I've finished You Deserve Nothing by Alexander Maksik today - upon your rec of course - and yes, a very controversial (the author, the main character, the portrayal of the story all felt very unreliable/open to question) but very engaging read!
Thank you so much for this list! It's great to get some Lit Fic recs that are different, and just in general to get some different books on my feed. One I would recommend is Fault Lines by Emily Itami -- it's a Lit Fic novel following an American-Japanese woman living in Tokyo and accidentally falling into an affair, and it's a really heartfelt, human story with great writing. It's also short & easy to read!
'Exciting Times' sounds interesting! I read 'Vladimir' from your recommendation but it wasn't quite for me, I was just a bit baffled at how the main character reached the point she did with Vladimir...it seemed a bit out of nowhere despite how obsessed she was with him. Currently reading 'The Third Policeman' which I think you might enjoy... it's quite bizarre, only about 30% through though so take the recommendation with a pinch of salt!
I can totally understand that the ending of Vladimir takes a right turn and wouldn’t be for everyone! Ooh I just looked up The Third Policeman and I can see that it could have potential, you’ll have to report back on your final thoughts! Btw, as you could see, Miso Soup is still lingering around my channel thanks to you 🙃
I've had The Collector on my TBR for years, so should get round to reading it, I guess haha. Heard that it also inspired (?) the excellent The Dumb House by John Burnside, which I think you'd like. One book you liked and recommended was My Dark Vanessa, which I recently listened to on Libby and loved it - horrible subject ofc, but excellent writing. Haven't been reading a lot of literary fiction these days, but Madam sounds interesting, as Rebecca is one of my faves. I tried The House of Leaves recently, but I just couldn't get into it. Too many footnotes, and I'm not a patient person lol so don't think that it's for me sorry!
You should definitely pick up The Collector! I just looked up The Dumb House and it sounds really good, I’m adding it to my TBR- thanks for the recommendation 😊 I’m so glad you enjoyed My Dark Vanessa! You’re right that the writing is soo good despite the heavy story Lol it’s true that House of Leaves takes a lot of patience so I understand! I hope you enjoy Madam if you decide to pick it up!
I’ve read several of these books and my all time favorite is The Collector. They made it into a movie as well in the 1960s. Both are wonderful.
I need to watch the adaptation!
I’ve missed you, Kari! Madam and In the Miso Soup sound amazing. I really enjoyed Persepolis and Vladimir. (Loved the blue nails 🪼)

I’m so happy to hear that you enjoy my recommendations ☺️ Let me know what you decide to pick up! Hope you are doing well too 💗
I screen shot every single book except one ..and can’t wait to read them all. I absolutely love videos like this…. so thank you so much.
I’m so glad you found it helpful! I hope you enjoy whatever you pick up 💖
P.S. YOU by Carolyn Keynes is a modern retelling of The Collector (in my opinion) and both are excellent and disturbing reads.
I agree that You is a retelling of The Collector!

@@ExLibrisKari Haha, I'm glad it has an impact! I still think about it fairly frequently and haven't read it for about a decade 😂

There is a movie version of The Collector made in 1965 starring Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar.
I had no idea, thanks for sharing! I’ll have to check it out
