The titanium Grayl, besides being very high priced is subject to denting that may prevent the filter from working as designed.

interesting observation. I had not factored that in. Good idea to treat it a little more gently then because the ability to boil with it validates the extra cost.

@@AndreFavron you can buy a standard Grayl and a pathfinder titanium cup (or Toaks, etc.) the Grayl nests into and still have even more versatility. Why? Because you probably wouldn’t want to cook or dirty up your “clean water” container.

I like the idea of the fold out razor blade for a survival cutter (some folk don't like the fact this is called a knife. Hey Sharp and Pointy right?!). For another choice Amazon has a single folding cutter which is a bit sturdier for those looking for that. One thing I have noticed lately is all the knives that are coming along with disposable blades and a pack of replacement blades. I am not sure how I think about this. Efficient and wasteful at the same time. I think we should really focus on making things last, repurpose etc. The small cutters discussed would do really well in a smaller container, say the one bag you always take. I am currently building bags to donate for auction to raise awareness etc. Thanks for the multitude of ideas!

Just a few things to co sider ..
#1. I saw lithium AAs which is great but no spare 123s... And thats bad. In a bad situation u wanna be able to run your most powerful lights IE your pistol light and your handheld with 123s (since AAs have extremely diminished output in that handheld light tho they do work) ALL NIGHT LONG if necessary. I would have atleast 2 full battery swaps for my pistol light and a couple spares for the handheld.
#2. As far as bandaids, all i recommend or buy anymore are fingertip and knuckle bandaids. The vast majority of boo boos that need a Band-Aid are on your hands and fingers. But those Band-Aids can be used Anywhere regardless, but work far better on fingers and hands and toes/side of foot for blisters than regular bandaids do.
#3. For the Grayl, they can be easily dented and deformed rendering them compromised. I always recommend an additional Pathfinder nesting cup which protects the actual body of the Grayl even more so, plus gives a second container with virtually no space or weight penalty.
#4. HEADLAMP. Flashlights are great, but going hands-free is important, it also helps immensely when using your pistol and weapon light allowing you to have a second light on your head shining around giving you twice as much capability to catch eyeshine from potential predators at night as they shine around independently of each other.
#5 i highly recommend adding atleast 1 space blanket. Especially since your Basha might be dedicated to overhead rain protection.
    #6 signalling devices.
Whistle, glowstick, pen flare launcher ect. And signal mirror which is also medical as it allows you to examine your face and eyes (EXTREMELY important aspect) tho some compasses incorporate this.

    • @PreparedAirman
      @PreparedAirman  10 місяців тому +2

@johnl-cz2qg That's the funny thing the industry tells you need all these things. They are trying to make money. If people would actually get off the couch and use their gear, they would find they don't need certain things.
I don't carry a fixed blade knife for hiking, fishing, camping stuff like that. Realistically, a good folding knife will do the job. I would carry a poncho but it's too large to fit in this kit bag. So I went with something smaller... lol

@@johnl-cz2qg I usually keep a knife in my pocket. Most of the time a SAK ranger is what I go with, gives me an actual locking 4 inch blade with a small saw too. Unless I'm doing some bushcraft shelter building or whatever for fun, I just don't need anything more than that.

Another recommendation, I started have these effervescent tabs called "Voost". You can usually get them on sale, and they have a lot of different flavors and vitamin/electrolyte combos..

Granted it would change regularly due to the ongoing movement. A Sextant may prove more useful, if out in the "doolies" but you can see the North Star. I have not seen any conversation on line re the use of compasses in the face of a major excursion. GPS will work as long as the satellites are working.

Given that the magnetic poles are in a major excursion and are no longer near the cardinal positions a compass is probably not going to be useful. Apart from a daily or weekly updated formula to determine true North which will not be available s/p super flare that takes down grid and net. Cardinal directions in daylight w a topo should work. Nightime, perhaps a Sextent for cellestial navigation especially if in a boat.. 😎

It has in past experiences... so are you wrong for saying it won't work? or am I wrong for actually witnessing a 10mm pistol work on a bear? Lol

Its will not stop conduction, but it will stop water/moisture absorption. It's just a vapor barrier.

Bear spray doesn't necessarily stop armed bipeds! IMHO, they are a much bigger (and common) threat!
