Absolutely wonderful! Annie's talk should be mandatory viewing for every pre-school, primary, secondary teacher in the world - for all parents and grandparents. I'm a step-grandparent and both my step-daughters work in Science, Math and education - I'm enrolling myself on a coding course so I can have fun with their kids. A marvelous talk. High five Annie!
Annie delivered a very clear lecture in plain English describing how the education is facilitated and translated into the digital learning environments with a final humans-robotics interaction aiming in a potential better future. Of course, the general language for the digital world of Oz is the mathematics whereas the coding languages look like as slang of them! Good job Annie! And…Congratulations!!!
Well, in terms of geography, of course a country like Singapore would be ranked higher on such educational lists compared to the US. In fact, most of countries that placed higher than the US are typically smaller in size and population. I feel like this is a factor that tends to be overlooked during such discussions, but I won't blame a 15 yr old for not regarding such things (just the adults who probably helped her conceive this talk). Secondly, at its core, the idea of education is not strictly about individual growth tailored to said individual's desires. It was always about prepping and integrating new generations of societal members that could meet the bare minimum requirements to function properly and economically so as to keep the community "machine" working efficiently. It was only during the last century that we as a species saw a change in perception regarding education and its merits for individual enlightenment (hence why there was such a huge boom in the film and music industries from the 50s through the 90s). But, such lofty ideas were never going to last forever as those who worshiped those titanous content creators of old had hoped (UA-cam personalities being an anomalous exception). With so many countries not including the US moving up the industrialization / urbanization ladder into 2nd and 1st world status, the competition, of course, became tougher, especially when the US was/is the country to beat leading to the decline in value of art-related ventures. Back to Singapore: their top industry sectors are integrated circuitry manufacturing and oil refining. For a country of its size, having these 2 sectors be your top grossing industries is a veritable gold mine no doubt. And with that, of course STEM is being pushed harder onto its younger generations,. thus tying back to the "education is for societal purposes" theory. Now, the US has these industries as well, and I suppose we do rather well with them, that is, within the confines of the states that lead in those sectors (e.g., California and Texas). But what about the rest of the country? IMO, USA's biggest exports are services that benefit consumers. An industry like that doesn't take 10 years of STEM education to pull off properly, just an entrepreneurial wherewithal, people skills, and a high level of charisma, things that seem to be on the decline due to the stigma that has been placed upon these traits by recent generations out of spite of the old guard and the strange sex appeal of being "awkward" or "introverted" or "troubled", no doubt an odd consequence of the internet/social media boom of the last decade (ironically, glorified UA-camrs tend to be possessors of most to all of these traits, but since they're products of the internet, they get a pass).
