Suppose you had kinesiotape. How would you tape for anterior ankle impingement syndrome?

      Thanks for the question
Kinesio tape is basic cotton. Think of rigid tape but super weak and also has spandex. So it has no actual capacity to provide “support/mechanical correction” like some brands profess.
The best thing with kinesiology tape is to apply with no stretch with the foot plantar flexed and over the area of pain as a pain relieving tape. I usually explain to a patient it’s like a pain relieving medication but in the form of a tape.
To mechanically correct the impingement you would need to use many layers of Kinesiotape which is not how it is used hence using rigid tape or nylon based activetape
      Hope that helps?!

Thanks for the great video! Very cool tape job which I just practiced on myself as I have anterior osseus impingement.
Quick question: I’ve always been taught to do AP mobs on the talus to increase dorsiflexion but if I understand this tape job correctly, you’re goal is to pull the tibia posteriorly relative to the talus which is the opposite of what I’ve been taught and has left me a tad confused.
Right now my thought process is....
Anterior impingement=decrease in dorsiflexion therefore do AP glide of talus (or PA glide of tibia).
Clearly I’m missing a piece of important information. Could you please explain. Thanks!

I am not saying this is correct but here is how I would clinically reason this. Following your concave-convex rules you are correct when trying mobilise the ankle to increase dorsiflexion.
In the case of impingement in some athletes we try to minimise dorsiflexion to prevent/reduce impingement to allow them to carry out the season. Hence in the video they are trying to limit dorsiflexion by applying an AP on the tibia. I would also support this strap with the use heel wedges to further reduce dorsiflexion.
Obviously there may be some sacrifice in athletic performance but it enables the athlete to continue playing without imminent need for surgical intervention, time off and/or other more intensive physiotherapy.
