- Bram Stoker was an Irish author who is celebrated for his 1897 Gothic horror novel Dracula. During his lifetime, he was better known as the personal assistant of actor Sir Henry Irving and business manager of the Lyceum Theatre, which Irving owned
Alan, yet again, may I take this opportunity on behalf of everyone to thank you for your time & effort in creating & sharing with us another masterpiece. You were shocked when I donated £30 on your last live - this is why!!!! It really does make me wonder if the internet & radio & TV disappeared today, what would people's imaginations create as Mary Shelley was inspired to create Frankenstein in the absence of the aforementioned technology. Another joy to watch & learn. Thank you.
Pantherking. I completely agree. Well done again Alan!! 😊 xx
That was exceptionally kind of you. Panther King, as you know I was very startled. I don't think about donations and when they happen I'm always surprised. On that particular weekend when they were relaxing without any stimulus from the outside world, they came up with the two most enduring characters which have been popular and stood the test of time for well over 100 years. I agree it's good to have head space. Thank you my dear friend Alan
Ohh what an excellent video report Alan! TONS of information and heaps of things to see and learn about.
I freely admit to feeling like this could be a bad decision to watch this, at 11pm of a night time, just before I went to bed, but I ignored my brain and clicked to watch anyway, and am so glad I did because this really was such a great watch.
Thank you Alan. I feel like my knowledge has been expanded! To pinch the title of a TV series from not so long ago (but long enough) ... Absolutely Fabulous!
Regards ~ Cobs (without the dogs trapping me by laying on my feet, because they're on the sofa, snoring their heads off -- deafening, and I'm not joking either!)
Hi Cobs I'm super pleased that you found it interesting because I realise Dracula is probably not everybody's cup of tea And I'm not a super fan, but it's an interesting backstory to its origins and ongoing popularity for such a long time. I had a ginger cat which lived to be 23 and it's later years. It used to lay on me virtually every night. I used to speak to him as we watch TV and sometimes thought 🤔 am I losing it? But we do have a connection and it's lovely... But I don't know about the snoring that could be pushing it .. good peaceful night Alan
Whenever you gift us a new video I know it's going to be a delightful experience. I feel as if I'm walking beside my favourite brother who loves to entertain me. You have such a warm personality, I always feel uplifted after journeying with you.
Avril what a beautiful reply! You truly made my evening to read it. The truth is that I did this film very quickly because I only had my phone and I had some technical difficulties, but I always enjoy the film and I enjoyed the research just before it and I love Whitby so it was a joy even though it was pretty cold. I absolutely adore reading the comments, not for ego boost mostly ..we love a little prase but mainly because I enjoy doing it and it's lovely to think people enjoyed being with me on the trip. Much love to you, Alan
Bram Stokers final resting place looks like somewhere straight out of a Dracula story! Thank you Alan for taking the time to research and film this for us, excellent stuff.
Hello Jude, I know it's kept out of the way now in a private section. Seems such a shame that people can't. Just wondering but they used to. But thank you for the great encouraging comment. You're a star!
Many thanks Alan, from Merritt, B.C., Canada. What a treat for all of us Bram Stoker/Dracula fans across the globe!
Thank you Carol. It is a great story. The history of how it all came to be. I only touched on the basic facts. Take care, Alan
What a wonderful story. Was going to mention bela Lugosi being buried in his costume, but you beat me to it. Christopher Lee was a lovely man.
Hello mortuary artist, yes, Christopher Lee was such a intelligent man. He spoke many languages and was super nice. I did have the pleasure in meeting in briefly once. Bela Lugosi I don't know but he certainly love the role. They said he thought he actually was Dracula :-)
Absolutely brilliant I have loved the book since I was a child my mum even bought me a audiobook (on a cassette tape) hehehe 🤭 that’s giving my age away lol thank you so much for taking the time to make this recording for us hugs Shelley ❤❤❤
Hello Shelley what are cassettes? .... Joking. I can remember real to real ahah It's an interesting backstory on how Dracula came to be and if people come for a day, it's interesting to look at the locations in Whitby. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Great to see you Alan
I enjoyed this very much. Loved the church interior. Love your tours as I don’t travel much these days and this is a great way of visiting historical places and learning more about people of interest. Sorry you were outbid by the Aussie! Thanks again.
Thank you Mary. Look after yourself
Alan, it really is so kind and generous of you to give us your time, effort and expense to show us all of these remarkable videos.
Today's one was particularly informative and very interesting. I want to say, along with many others I am sure, a big Thank You.
Hello Valerie, it's not a chore. I really enjoy doing it and it's very lovely when people enjoy it back. I really just want the channel to be a homely place where everyone can interact and get to know each other. Thank you for your lovely comment Alan
Phenomenal grave and town. Love Whitby I believe there is actually a Dracula museum
Hello Joseph, there is the Dracula experience. I went through it last year and it's good with a nice film at the end. I had some of the footage but couldn't use it because it would make mine too long. But if you ever come it's worth the money, especially the last bit the film.. all the best mate
Hello Alan thanks for this very fascinating and interesting video, I learnt so much and really enjoyed it. Love the historical ones. Take care of your lovely self.
Thanks a lot Joan I had to do this one with it being centred around Whitby :-) Great to see you! 🙂
Loved this how very pretty the area is Alan, glad you got into see his ashes too. Brilliant ❤️
Thank you serenity Sue he's inspired so many great stories he needed to be celebrated... Very kind of you
What a beautiful place, great video thank you
Thank you very much Sue :-)
Alan another gret video from alan basingstoke
Such a beautiful place, fascinating tour.. thankyou Alan really enjoyed this 😊 👍 xx
Thank you Sandra. He gave you the basics of the Dracula's conception and Whitby is a nice setting. Thank you
Another fantastic video Alan. Always wanted to go visit Whitby.. I tried my hand at photography many years ago with my old Praktica camera.. and love the photos that Francis Meadow Sutcliffe, from Whitby took. I believe there was a musium of him and his photos there somewhere. Maybe you could do a little graveyard tour of him one day, as if you aren't busy enough. LOL. Take care and thanks very much. :-)
Hello Graham, ada used to be a shop selling his photographs by one of his relatives at the bottom of flowergate but it's gone now. There isn't a museum at the moment, but I love the story of him coming to photograph the rich Victorians when the train connected Whitby and in his spare time only did he take the photographs of the fishermen and the farms. None of these were sold. They were as hobby. All the plates and all the photographs are still in existence unlike the former which would all sold to the public. So it's the opposite way around now. The real life photographs not the posed posh Victorians are the ones we can see. He started off in Waterloo yard which is above the yard where my cottages in just a little building. I was super successful but his era. I love his photographs and so do a lot of other people..... I am going to look for his grave but I don't think it's publicly known but I'll try. Thank you for your interest. It's super nice of you Alan
Never been to Whitby, I have now, thank you Alan, brilliant video , now here's a strange thing, I was talking to my cousin who's mum loved Bram stoker and Dracula and basically all things Vampire, when , and I kidbyou not, the notification of yours popped up, needless to say we recon her mum my aunty was with us xx
Well that's great to hear Wendy Dracula is such a big part of the tourism for Whitby along with the goth element so I had to do this at some point. It was such a pity that Bram Stoker never knew how successful his book was If he could see now it would be really pleased. If you ever get the chance and you liked old world charm and history Whitby is a good visit. I'm glad you've had a glimpse. Bye for the moment. Alan
Hi Alan. Started watching last night but with not sleeping for 48 hours I actually fell asleep. I've just finished watching your video. So interesting I have been to whitby many times I've walked up those steps sat on that part of the beach but didn't know you could go in the church and didn't know about the museum. So glad you showed everything and told the story so well. I really enjoyed watching and listening thank you so much 💕 from West Yorkshire ❤️
Hi Gill I'm sorry that you haven't been sleeping well. You must have missed a whole night's sleep 😔 Whitby is a small place but it's pretty but I just wanted to tell the story of Bram Stoker and Dracula without making it too long. I'm glad you enjoy. I hope you can get a good sleep. We all need it to be healthy :-)
Isn’t Whitby the most visited seaside town? It seems that the story of Drac will be ongoing. Didn’t know it was the second most read book. I like that you do such a lot of research for your podcasts. Tfs. 😊
And you also do you have research Mary 👍 I thought the best thing I did was to actually find the ashes of Bram Stoker. They're locked in a room so I was very pleased to get access. Thank you, Alan
Whitby, Captain James Cook's home town!
Absolutely Craig
Another great video Alan. Thank you for all your hard work and the research you do.
Hello joy, it's nice to see you thanks!
I read Dracula when I was about 15, I am now 74, I seem to remember some of the story took place in Tilbury, I must get a copy and read it again
Hello Peter, I've never actually read the book so you'll know more about it than mate. Never heard of it taking part in Tilbury but I bet you're right.
That’s amazing, I never realized it was next to the bible in sales
I read it when I was 12 as I just love horror, an excellent book in every way so sad he didn’t live to see its rightful recognition
🦇🦇
Fangs Very much.
Fun walk, Dracula was very different as a character in his book as the movies, even Copolla didn't really capture the book ..
Looking forward to new walks.
Tom, Belgium.
Hi Alan, another great video, interesting, and makes you aware of what history and stories places hold, place's we have been lots of times but don't realise what happened there in the past! Keep up the good work. Steve from Hull!
I can't recall if I have already commented on this. Never been and always wanted to visit. Last night I watched "Dracula Prince of Darkness" another great Hammer production, love all things Hammer made, they were terrific, I loved this yet again, goodness knows how many times I have seen it, apart from the very first time LoL, now I don't know if it was deliberate on the part of Hammer but at the part of the film where the butler brings out an urn it is exactly the colour and style of the one shown by you here - amazing!
Somehow I missed this video earlier but I caught up today and thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot Thank you Alan.
Thanks Al... love your vids
Cheers, Pat
Hi Alan, loving your videos as I've heard or seen most of your feature people on tv here in New Zealand... keep up the good work pal
Well that's super Steve because when you remember the characters it means so much more. That's why I enjoy doing them myself. As what places with you? It's a bit cold in the UK at the moment :-)
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep its just starting to cool down here, we have had a lot of bad weather and flooding with a lot of property damage and unfortunately a few people have passed away.... cleanup and road rebuilding will take some time
I’m hoping to visit Whitby this year. Something for many years has drawn me there.
Hello Bohemian, if you do and you want any advice I'll be happy to do so. It's a lovely place if you like old fishing parts. It's got quietness.
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep It’s a Shearings coach holiday I’m looking at booking for.
This is fantastic Alan 🙂 for an aging Goth like me lol 🦇. I read Bram Stoker's book years ago. I can only echo the other wonderful comments on Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee... wonderful 💀🖤
Hi Liesl don't The goths in Whitby have a fantastic time. Some of them spend all year in costume 😜 I love to watch them. Never been one but whatever floats you boat is great. I could still lose myself in the horror which I watched as a kid. Love your comments.
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep Thank you Alan, you're right 👍. I must visit Whitby again one day.
The legend of vampires has existed for millennia before the early 1800s though various changes and editions happened over the centuries. For example, the idea of vampirism as a contagion that is passed on from vampires was invented by Stoker.
Also to say Dracula wasn’t a success as a novel at the time is a bit hyperbolic. My understanding is it was only a moderate success, Stoker being far more well known at the time for his biographies. Of course it was later that it became the cultural phenomena as you said.
Hi Alan lovely video weather looks Grimm I used to love those old Dracula movies with cristopher lee when I was younger used to scare me half to death I was afraid to go upstairs in the dark to bed but I loved them anyway great movies can’t beat them thanks Alan take care ❤️😊👍🏻
Hello Crystal, there used to be a program on Friday nights about 10:00. That was called appointment with fear and I think it was because I was about 10 years old and I loved it. Isn't it a shame we have to grow up?😄
Wow really enjoyed that one Alan .. love Dracula 🧛🏽♂️ .. what a beautiful place Whitby is 😊
Hello Debbie, I'm a bit biased cuz I leaving Whitby but it is quaint and beautiful and for people like the goths and Dracula it's a dream place. Thank you for the comment 😊
Love your channel , it’s a history lesson today 😊 thank you 😊
Thank you my friend
A fantastic video. I have heard of Dracula of course but not of Bram Stoker! I enjoyed this presentation very much.Thank you.

Hi there Sally, it is It's very quaint. Thank you! Great to see you
Whitby should have a Dracula statue to remember him. Brilliant video, thanks.
I totally agree. There should be a Dracula. Statue or maybe even better a Bram Stoker Fangs you very much. Tim
Hi Alan. I'm so glad I found your channel. I've been watching a marathon of your videos to catch up 😂. Thankyou for showing so many of the lovely buildings and the stories about them. I'm so sorry to hear you lost your partner. I hope you are doing ok. You come across as a lovely compassionate guy. All the best and keep up the good work
Hello Donna, that's so sweet of you too to take interesting the films I did last year and I'm doing okay regardind losing Pauline she wouldn't want any different. I haven't made any new films this year. I still got the few left but I intend to carry on because she backed me on the films and I want to resume my travels. So thank you for the encouragement. I'll remember you That was very kind of you to taking off interest. Much love to you, Alan
Wow beautiful Church❤❤❤❤❤ thank you for your story❤❤❤❤❤❤
The village was super as well. Obviously it's a wealthy area. I guess that helps 😉 All the best Breanna
Author, not Auther in your title.
Another superb video!
Have I asked before, do you leave a floral or any tribute. The touching of their stone is always poignant.
Well Bohemian I did mention this on my live the other night that I'm going to leave not living flowers so I don't have the idea of that but I'm going to leave a tribute on each one in the future. The visiting of the ashes on this one was done in November, but the new ones when I set up in 3 or 4 weeks time we'll have the new tribute. Thank you for taking the time too. Take interest that's very kind of you Alan
No I didn't miss this video but I didn't remember it.Sorry I didn't mean to fib!!!
Thank you, Jacqueline
Brilliant Alan. Everything you do is excellent - well-researched and respectful, but this is one of the best. I have read "Dracula". It's very long and not easy to read. I can understand why it wasn't one of his most popular at the time. He wrote other, much shorter adventure stories that are easier to read. But he captured the public imagination in a way no other author has.
That's extremely interesting Elizabeth, that you've read the book. You know more about it than me and I should take the time to do it myself and make a comparison with this works. Thank you for the very interesting comment.
My favourite location in the U.K.
I visit at Lear twice a year & also for WGW in October
Fantastic Lune It's a lovely place

Hello Sue and Vic, that's very nice for you to tell me about that channel. I will look it up now and tell you what I think about it. I hope you're both feeling good and what a shame about the engine. All the best, Alan

I have been to Whitby a few times and always injoyed it and will be making a trip to Whitby this summer and all the places you pointed out on the video I will definitely give them a visit
Thanks again Alan take care
Hello Karl, definitely he never knew obvious success which is a shame he's widow. She did so I guess that's one cancellation. When you think he took 10 years to write the book he put a lot into it....
@@MotorHomeBeepBeep Hi Alan thanks for a tremendous video I had a visit to Crowfield church to see Roy Hudds restiing place and yes what a lovely little church keep the good work up

Thanks for another great video. Was that an old penny on the left hand side of his urn? x
Hello Caroline, honestly I don't know. I'm going to have to take another look when I went to visit it. A nice gentleman. Let me up to the fourth floor of the building, but he didn't have much time so I had to be really quick so I'm afraid I miss that
@MotorHome Beep Beep I once read somewhere that you left a penny to pay the ferryman to get you to the other side... just reminded me of it. I'm not even sure it it was true, though. x
Thank you Alan x
