I tested if and how the lens works on my RED.
Quickly checking if the lens is parfocal and if the aperture can stepless be adjusted.

Hey! Thanks for the video. According to RED, the lens corrections won't be applied in-camera the way they are by default on Canon cameras. Do you see dramatic barrel distortion on the RED at the wide end compared to the C70?

I honestly tested the lens most of the time with the c70.
I did shoot some stuff on the Red as well and haven’t noticed any barrel distortion. ☺️
Nice. @@pauleporterdp I'm working on a video about the lens corrections right now. At 24mm in photos in Lightroom when you toggle them on and off it's DRAMATIC. You lose quite a bit of field of view with the corrections enabled, but it kills all the vignetting and distortion. The C70 doesn't seem to have a way to disable them, and ironically the Red doesn't have a way to enable them.
Ok that’s crazy.
I only had the lens for a week and a project at the other Side of the country.
I took the lens with me and shot the project with it.
I would have preferred to spent more time and do more tests with it 😊 so I’m looking forward to your in depth tests 😎

Hi Paul. What is the focus throw like. Have they made it a little longer than their other stills lenses. It’s really hard to do a focus pull zoomed in on a stills lens… no room on the focus ring..

As far as I remember the throw was longer than on photo lenses but it don’t know by how many degrees

How does it perform on full frame? Especially at the 24mm setting it seems to not cover the whole 3:2 full frame are - I wonder if this is also true for the 16:9 and/or 17:9 crop, we usually record videos in.
I haven’t tested it on a full frame camera I’m sorry
@@pauleporterdp It seems to be fine for the 16:9 and 17:9 crops from my research, but at the 24mm setting it does not cover the whole 3:2 area. So for documentary film makers it is still a very good full frame lens but for photographers on full frame cameras, the first couple millimeters arent all that good.

I can’t decide between this lens or 28-70 F2 from Canon. I have the Sigma 24-70 Art now and it is great also.
True this is a great lens. I think with 105 from canon you have a bit more flexibility and the 4mm on the wide end do make a difference
@@pauleporterdp The 24-105 doesn't impress me. It's a weird shape lens with a robotic zoom but it isn't a big enough zoom range that you'd ever really need a robotic zoom. 10x zoom with a robotic zoom ok... 4x robotic? What is the point? Most people can zoom 4x by hand. So.. my opinion, the design is bad because of the zoom and the end result is not worth it so much.

Die einfache Version ohne den zusätzlichen Stecker kostet knapp 1000€ und die mit Stecker kostet dann fast 1500€. Damit kann man den Zoom mit einer Kabelfernbedienung betätigen! Wegen diesem Firlefanz ist das Objektiv so lang und schwer geworden! Die Gewindebohrungen am Objektivkörper sind nicht abgedeckt!

So I balanced it on my Glidecam easily.
I don’t use gimbals so that’s why.
But if you use an R6 I assume you will have to counterweight it on the back of the camera since the r6 is soo lightweight.
On the c70 with a v Mount our oven bp 60 battery it was pretty balanced already

Do Canon mirrorless cameras still have that weird issue when shooting video that makes the footage look wobbly, especially in the corners? Like the whole image plane is shifting around. I think it must be a stabilisation issue. I noticed it in a few of the DPReview videos.

Just to clarify, it’s electronically parfocal and some people showing that show that there was a little bit of lag if you’re doing rapid, but in real world most people don’t do whip zooms where it would be an issue

This lens makes more sense on R5c, which ironically is the only RF full-frame cinema camera with autofocus.
There is just no native RF super35 zoom lens with AF or IS, e.g. 16-55 f/2.8, like you'd find on Sony E-mount.

I've been a huge fan of the 24-105 focal length for a while... I've owned both EF versions and the RF version for my R5c and while I did love it and IMO F4 was still plenty good and for it's size it was the perfect all around lens. The 2.8 version just is way over prices and massive for just 1 more stop of light IMO. I loved the F4 because even used RF version is $850-900 for such a versatile walk around lens it's the do it all. I could not even imagine walking around town with this thing, or hiking with it. It's specifically a Hybrid cinema / photo lens mainly for smaller productions. I actually just recently sold the 24-105 and replaced it with the 14-35 F4 and the 70-200 F4. They cover more focal length for not much more room in the bag.
Yeah definitely not a hiking lens. But could be extremely useful for more production focused gigs.

The 24-105 F4 "L" has the worst IQ of any lens in Canon's L lineup right now though, and afaik it's not by a small margin. I'm curious if this one is sharper than the 24-70 f/2.8 or not. The 24-70 has only been "ok it's a good lens", nothing magical in my experience. If this lens brought prime-like sharpness to the 24-105 range, then that would be really killer.
I don't understand why they didn't do a 16-70 or something similar for Super 35 sensors. Canon has only one cinema camera that is full frame and this 24-105 is definitely for a full frame camera.

The problem is Canon only has one camera that uses the full potential of this lens (R5c). Untill they bring out a pro full frame cinema camera with RF mount it is not worth the money for me.

great video :D awesome lens.. filming on the C70, R5C and the R3 my self... problem is:
- C70 needs speedbooster.. then its not RF anymore.. and without, its a crop sensor makes the 24-105 a 38 mm. - 168mm lens..
- R5C needs ND filter adaptor behind the lens (build in) and that makes it EF s well.. Canon almost had it right..
- R3 is full frame but not cinema menu, and nu build in ND.. and really its a photo camera for me.
Canon PLS let 2024 be the year that they make a no compromise C500 mark 3 that has:
4K 120
Full frame
RF mount
Build in ND
Opengate recording

@@SneakyCalebthe focal range is more useable for events + 1 stop brighter at wider end. With Canon 24-105 2.8 price, you can buy 1 fullframe mirrorless body + samyang 35-150.
Here the Russians are going to achieve movie effects with simple lenses, this lens is too expensive for me, in my city you will not see the price for it, you can hang on it and arrange a podium

When I had the lens there was an update available for many RF Cameras which enabled them to fully support this lens did you install this?
