Yes it's good that you enquired about that pathway! And it also begs the question as to how many other paths or access points are closed for "no apparent reason"!!
I remember a lot of things happening in the late 60s like this when i was a kid and know one did anything about it, i remember a small slip road to some shops having a six foot fence put across to block it off because a bloke didn't like the road going past his property and its still like it today because nobody questioned it at the time.
This appears to be a regular problem. I used to walk my dogs along an ancient ridgeway, which was suddenly blocked off by a local landowner some 20 years ago. The fingerpost disappeared and old barbed wire, machinery was dumped in the entrance from the lane. Not wanting to risk injury to my dogs, I walked them through to gated farmyard, whereupon I was challenged by to owner. I advised him that I would continue to use his yard as an access to the ridgeway until the proper access was made safe. He then made a fuss over my dogs being off lead. This was despite them being trained gundogs, behaving perfectly in the presence of his livestock. Since that time I have noticed several attempts to close local footpaths.

My late Mother used to belong to the local 'Ramblers Association' and this was a common thing they often encountered on walks. Primarily it was farmers putting barbed wire and posts to block footpaths or removing a hedgerow with a parallel footpath to make 2 fields into 1 big field but the footpath now ran thru the middle of the 1 big one. House owners were also complicit in extending gardens to incorporate part of a woodland or a river at the end of their garden and blocking off either side. A property (semi detached) I purchased recently had no fence at the rear dividing the properties, but it was quite clear from the rear bed window that the neighbour had encroached 1 mtr over the boundary line. He claimed it had been that way for the last 40 yrs but after showing him the 'Land Registry Deeds', + a large scale O/S plan he reluctantly moved his greenhouse back to where it should have been in the first place. People will try it on to see if they can get away with it.

Ace, suspect Council Planning oversight in developing the housing estate on the east half of the footpath. The Public Footpath Glossop FP 81 was along the drive when the property was Travis Perkins and no apparent footpath signage back to 2009 street view. Glossop Caravan staff may not have been aware or long since forgot if the signage was missing - but - likely been in documents when purchasing Travis Perkins lot. Suspect at some point in the past Travis Perkins (or Council) removed the signage to secure their rear yard. Also the Council and Footpath maps show the footpath leading to a park to the east before the housing estate was constructed. Appears Council never revised the route of Glossop FP 81 or posted new signage. Need to check the housing estate plate planning application (early 2000s ???) for any revisions or closure to Glossop FP 81. When Travis Perkins owned the property, if fencing was added the footpath should have been addressed in any planning applications. Glossop FP 81 route: Public Footpath 81 went from Wooley Bridge Road along Travis Perkins drive and across the yard behind the building. Path entered the trees and connected to the cycling trail NCN 62. Path continued through the woods and beside 22 Wharncliffe Close in the housing estate. On Wharncliffe Close the asphalt public footpath is clearly visible and maintained 2009 and 2023 street view but there is No public footpath signage and appears on the Derbyshire Council definitive map as a gray walk between homes. The Council definitive map still shows the purple dash footpath south of 23 Wharncliffe crossing several gardens to the park to the east. Could also check if Council intended to reroute the west half of Glossop FP 81 from NCN 62 to the street behind the terrace cottages to the south of Glossop Caravan/Travis Perkins. No street view available. Regardless, definitive map needs updated.
Now ... I know that Google Maps and Street View are quite badly broken so it's no wonder that when you go to drop the lilittle orange figure on the road just the other side of that gate ... you can't drop it there as though it is a private road ... BUT ... if you drop it outside of the gate, you can see the gate then if you click on the road THROUGH the gate, it takes you through but if you then spin the viewpoint round 180 degrees ... NO GATE AT ALL !!! and BOTH pictures have 2023 watermarked on to them. Do the Ramblers Association know about this cos they go about hiking in groups using footpaths specifically to stop scumbag landowners blocking them off.
If you can do that it means the photo past the gate is from older images. Google Earth historical images should show when the change to access was made.
There's one or two FPs nr me that have "disappeared" over the years due to neglect but they do still show on the map. There's a big leccy sub stn nr me too and they have blocked off everything but left the style available.
A footpath is a public right note right it is your right to walk along it regardless of time these paths have been there for hundreds of years they allow free access along land so prevent you walking on privet land.
Great video Ace. I notice travis Perkins was on the site before the caravan centre, according to google earth history the service centre was bulit between 2000 and 2003. But i did notice the manager take a glup when you asked him why the foot-path was blocked. Have you any updates on this matter. The new gates where put up after T.P was closed. ☘
He's adamant theres no problem, but there is a problem now that he has been informed, therefore he should investigate now that the issue has been highlighted, not keep brushing it off.
How old is the map,? as that path has been built over by a housing estate on the other side of the bridleway which was the old railway with a footbridge (no longer needed)
The company is not allowed to block a right of access point even if the footpath runs through private land. On private land, the footpath is maintained by the land owner who must make the path accessible and unobstructed at all times. The land buyers are made aware of this when purchasing the property.
So the company is willing to wait to get a legal enforcement notice from the council rather than be proactive and fix the issue themselves. So instead of getting praise for acting properly, they project a negative light about how they handle everything. How will they fix faulty caravans?
this company already have a shit name for selling caravans that are complete rubbish, the ysell old damp rubbish and pretend its a one owner or carefully looked after etc.. if someone phones up about one and arranges a preview they quickly wash them.. look at the state of the roofs on all their vans....... anyone who wants a van this place is to be avoided big time.
Glossop caravans is 2 miles from me, my son worked there but unfortunately passed away, his job was fitting carpets in the caravans, the boss Nick is a very good boss that couldnt do enough for his staff, my son thought highly of him, to be fair those caravans you see in the video are not for sale, thats the service area where they're refurbished before they go on sale at the main forecourt which is half a mile down the road, everything is ripped out to a shell before all new is refitted internally, they do have a small selection of old caravans for sale that arent refurbed, that are bought as seen but most are refurbed, this company is the largest caravan company in UK and been open since 1976, it's a family business, his father owned it before Nick, I'm not one to comment on these auditing videos but felt I had to on this occasion, Nick is a kind fair boss with a very successful company, I think you're comment it unfair to the company, as a quick Google search for reviews will tell you most customers are happy with the caravans/motor homes they've purchased and have 4.1 on trust pilot, I've never met the owner of Glossop caravans I just know what my sons opinion of him was and how much he loved working there
It is a footpath, I was born and bread in the house next door to the site in 1966, used that path everyday, it was formally known as Lee Street which was demolished in the early 70s it is a public right of way which can never be taken away, they are trying to steal land that guy is a bear faced liar and if you like I will meet you there, I saw them build Travis perking, the council used the plot for storage after the demolishing of Lee Street, prior to selling it to Travis perking with the agreement that right of way will never be denied that was in the contract 👍
The guy seemed to be pretty okay about the whole thing. Fair enough he didn't want to be on UA-cam and I think an audit would probably produce some adverse reaction. But still, I think he was alright. Good luck sorting it out :)
Hi this was very interesting, how can I confirm who is responsible for an access road, the council say it’s not them but it’s in a public park and has council no trespassing signs on it
I seem to remember a story about someone who built a house that covered a public footpath. They were given two choices. They would have to allow people to walk through their property or pull it down.
Council rights of way officer will have something to say on the matter if brought to their attention. Check out the council definitive map for more info.
Good video ....hope u posted any updates?...looks like you’ve found a different subject to audit as I reckon there are many public right of ways blocked off like this ...simply because some local business owner doesnt want people walking past their property ....when it doesnt work that way ..just because that guy has never seen the path doesnt mean it's 14:34 not meant to be there does it
So... I have contacted the local Ramblers, Peak & Northern Footpath Association, High Peak Borough Council, and Derbyshire County Council I will also be contacting Glossop Caravans for what it's worth, to encourage them to restore the footpath as defined in the property register. How are you all getting on? The more people doing this will increase the probability of this getting sorted :)
So, an obstructed path is one where something is lying (or has been placed) across the path which physically prevents you from using that part of the path. It is a criminal offence, under section 137 of the Highways Act 1980, to obstruct the whole or part of the width of a public path . This should be reported to both the police and local authority and needs to be opened. Full stop.
I have lived round there all my life and cannot remember a foot path, where Travis Perkins is used to be a row of houses called Lees street, where the caravan place is was known locally as the rubber dump, the bridle path she refers to used to be the old railway line running up to machonacies in Hadfield, why would there have been a footpath leading to a rail way line
Hiya Ace Audits, excellent video job good job so please keep them coming GL&HF coming from Dulwich London England(✌peace✌) p.s. it seems like somebody has been a bit greedy with helping themselves to the public land ( the greedy Bastards)
Great start to your investigation. The caravan man wasn’t to proactive, me thinks he will have to stump up some money to reinstate the footpath stolen from the public. Question: is there a statute of limitations regarding ownership of the land the footpath should be on?
No statute. Will change ownership I should think without a application to change ownership. At which point the caravan business owner would have stated this. Its a bit like the council don't need to declare a footpath as their own at anytime and no-one can then just declare it as their own just because no-one used it
The caravan people have been there that long they've "forgotten" it's in their landregistry deeds.

Your local authority should be made aware and they will sort it.
Local public servants not authority as they have none
@@112boatman Ah, ok, the person to seek out is the rights of way officer.
Looking forward to a follow-up.
Look forward to any progress
When they bought next door was the fence there or did they close it off.
Just a thought on this, but have you tried to access the footpath from the opposite end where it connects to the BridleWay? It would be interestingly see how far you can walk down it until you reach some obstruction or barrier. Fantastic discovery regarding the lack of access to the public, hope you can keep us updated on this.
It's blocked
Great video again, the reaction was better than I thought usually its arrogance and anger, I think he was expecting this, lts hard to think this was an "error" or mistake
He's devoed because he's now going to have to shift all those empty tin cans off that land that he knows doesn't belong to him .... Well done !
Great work here Ace i think he has an idea of what you are saying he has a gulp of guilt just after the 5 minute mark,He knows more than he's letting on blaming everybody but himself, will be interesting to see the outcome
The look on his face when i told him I'm a UA-camr 😂
@@AceAudits yes agreed I think there'll be a lot of head scratching going on after this
Ace, suspect Council Planning oversight in developing the housing estate on the east half of the footpath.
Glossop FP 81 route:
Public Footpath 81 went from Wooley Bridge Road along Travis Perkins drive and across the yard behind the building.
The photo past the gate is from 2016 as when the car came in 2023 it could no longer get access. @@Mr-J...
There's one or two FPs nr me that have "disappeared" over the years due to neglect but they do still show on the map. There's a big leccy sub stn nr me too and they have blocked off everything but left the style available.
Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤
This is a difficult case due to the amount of time passed.
It will also depend on what the land registry have on this.
Very interested. Keep us posted
Thanks. Yes, I posted a follow up video ☺️
He's adamant theres no problem, but there is a problem now that he has been informed, therefore he should investigate now that the issue has been highlighted, not keep brushing it off.
It's not active because it's fenced off !!!. It is a public right of way and on an OS map. Great work, ACE 👏. Extremely good audits. 👍.
Those gates look different to the fencing, so I suspect they have been installed recently?
Does the lend registry have any authority in this case ?
I hope it's reinstated.
Very interesting! If you do follow this up please update us!
Imagine how long that footpath has been there so you had better open it back up.
Would have been interesting to see the other end of 81 at the bridleway, good vid tho 👍🏻
go girl, keep us updated please
Great Video, please do a follow up video showing the result 👍
There will be, am just waiting for an email, then will be able to share my findings 😊
Can you approach the path from the other end, ie the bridle path?
It's blocked of by the company
How old is the map,? as that path has been built over by a housing estate on the other side of the bridleway which was the old railway with a footbridge (no longer needed)
Would love to see follow up's on how this proceeds.
They can’t be that bad as there’s a lot of stock there.
Glossop caravans is 2 miles from me, my son worked there but unfortunately passed away, his job was fitting carpets in the caravans, the boss Nick is a very good boss that couldnt do enough for his staff, my son thought highly of him, to be fair those caravans you see in the video are not for sale, thats the service area where they're refurbished before they go on sale at the main forecourt which is half a mile down the road, everything is ripped out to a shell before all new is refitted internally, they do have a small selection of old caravans for sale that arent refurbed, that are bought as seen but most are refurbed, this company is the largest caravan company in UK and been open since 1976, it's a family business, his father owned it before Nick, I'm not one to comment on these auditing videos but felt I had to on this occasion, Nick is a kind fair boss with a very successful company, I think you're comment it unfair to the company, as a quick Google search for reviews will tell you most customers are happy with the caravans/motor homes they've purchased and have 4.1 on trust pilot, I've never met the owner of Glossop caravans I just know what my sons opinion of him was and how much he loved working there
I lived around there going back to when it was Midco and don’t ever remember a footpath.
Please, to update with further information and conclusion
It is a footpath, I was born and bread in the house next door to the site in 1966, used that path everyday, it was formally known as Lee Street which was demolished in the early 70s it is a public right of way which can never be taken away, they are trying to steal land that guy is a bear faced liar and if you like I will meet you there, I saw them build Travis perking, the council used the plot for storage after the demolishing of Lee Street, prior to selling it to Travis perking with the agreement that right of way will never be denied that was in the contract 👍
Top stuff as always 👍👍
The guy seemed to be pretty okay about the whole thing. Fair enough he didn't want to be on UA-cam and I think an audit would probably produce some adverse reaction. But still, I think he was alright. Good luck sorting it out :)
He’s just not getting it is he.
Let’s get this footpath back!!
Hi this was very interesting, how can I confirm who is responsible for an access road, the council say it’s not them but it’s in a public park and has council no trespassing signs on it
Check with the rights of way team at the council, they should either be able to tell you or direct you to somewhere that can
Also check this www.findmystreet.co.uk/map
it the council who are denying ownership, can I email you direct with the information?
I seem to remember a story about someone who built a house that covered a public footpath. They were given two choices. They would have to allow people to walk through their property or pull it down.
😂
@@AceAudits Oh, and added to the fact that the property was built without proper planning permission.
Council rights of way officer will have something to say on the matter if brought to their attention. Check out the council definitive map for more info.
He acted like he couldnt give a dam
He should of offered you back to his office to check this out and also offered to open the gates for you
Good video ....hope u posted any updates?...looks like you’ve found a different subject to audit as I reckon there are many public right of ways blocked off like this ...simply because some local business owner doesnt want people walking past their property ....when it doesnt work that way ..just because that guy has never seen the path doesnt mean it's 14:34 not meant to be there does it
So... I have contacted the local Ramblers, Peak & Northern Footpath Association, High Peak Borough Council, and Derbyshire County Council
I will also be contacting Glossop Caravans for what it's worth, to encourage them to restore the footpath as defined in the property register.
How are you all getting on? The more people doing this will increase the probability of this getting sorted :)
You got a story there.
Let me know what happens it would draw a line so the company and public could move on and resolve one way or the other.
Yup, my local branch of Travis also did this approx. 15years ago
That fence has not been there 35 years
Stolen public land
It was never accessible when it was Travis Perkins who used it as a bulk storage yard. I am going back 20 or so years.
It's mapped as one 🤷
Maybe it stopped being used when someone put the railway track across it 100 years or so ago and Lee's street was built
Its a bit like the council don't need to declare a footpath as their own at anytime and no-one can then just declare it as their own just because no-one used it
I live in Australia but my parents were from Chesterfield moving to Australia in the 1950’s.
