More About 'American Gods': American Gods is a Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novel by English author Neil Gaiman. The novel is a blend of Americana, fantasy, and various strands of ancient and modern mythology, all centering on the mysterious and taciturn Shadow. Several of the themes touched upon in the book were previously glimpsed in The Sandman comic book series. The book was published in 2001 by Headline in the United Kingdom and by William Morrow in the United States. A special tenth anniversary edition, with the "author's preferred text" and including an additional 12,000 words, was published by William Morrow in June 2011. The text is identical to the signed and numbered limited edition that was released by Hill House Publishers in 2003. This version of the text has also been in print from Headline, Gaiman's publisher in the UK since 2005.[2] The tenth anniversary edition marks the first time the author's preferred text has been available in wide release outside the UK. Gaiman also did a very extensive sold-out book tour celebrating the tenth anniversary and promoting this book in 2011.

Hassan Thomas I think Orlando Jones proved that when they let him become a writer on the show. He took that character in another direction. A direction that would be considered a red herring. They had no idea what his agenda was until after Mr. Nancy aka Anansi had revealed his true intent. It never crossed their mind that the truth from a trickster God could wake up so many people that usually don't pay attention to the subtleties of info in movies or tv shows. He fooled them all by simply telling the truth.

He didn't tell them the whole story, only the bad parts. Deliberate half-truths and obfuscations.
It was kind of weird because he is a different Mr. Nancy than the character from Anansi Boys, who I felt was essentially benevolent. Although the brief mention he gets in American Gods suggests he is ambiguous but not underhanded.

I just stumbled on some American Gods UA-cam clips and got a bit hooked... It seems seriously bizarre, very creative, and the casting is brilliant. Two of the clips I watched had monologues by Mr. Jones (who I had never heard of or seen before) and I thought they were both riveting.
I am a bit taken aback by people saying that Mr. Jones was "fired". Maybe some can reply to this post and explain why he was, or people think he was, fired. He's clearly a great actor (and I doubt he will have any difficulty getting more work :) ). And was he really "fired"?... Game of Thrones had Ned Stark/Sean Bean's head cut off in the early years of that series but no one says Sean Bean got "fired."

Orlando Jones is an amazing actor. Most people have only seen his comedic skills. I think it terrified those in control of this show that he came out of the gate preaching revolt. And that he got more intense as the series continued, instead of toning it down to the voice of everlasting, and unending patience that whites want blacks to have. "Turn your problems over to God, or Jesus". They had to stop him before he used this as a platform for truth and action.

You missed the point, Beni. Anansi, a legend to the Africans captured by the slave traders, answered their desperate prayers and used his cunning to free them from their shackles. What might be uncharacteristic is the inspired vindication of setting fire to the oppressor's ship, resulting in their double-edged demise. Still, he was not manipulating them when he explained the situation they were in. We can surmise that these people -even if they were able to somehow win over control of the ship from the armed captors- would still be left to a fate just as grave as immolation.
