- We're back with another Cel / Toon Shader tutorial today, this time looking at creating some cool water ripples or caustics using just a single material. It's all procedurally generated, so let's jump right in!

For those Struggling in blender 4.1, the Musgrave texture has been merged into the Noise Texture node, the correct parameters are:
3D
fBM
Unchecked Normalize
Scale: 0.1
Detail: 0.03
Roughness: 1 - 0
Lacunarity: 2
Distortion: 0
what is fBM

thank you!
you're a lifesaver muAH
I swear, all your tutorials are great and beginner friendly. I can't wait for you to get more recognition🔥
this is insane, i just searching on yt how to make anime water blender, and then i got this tutorial, so simple, fast and easy to learn , thanks for making this .
Have never even touched Blender but this makes me wanna give it a go, looks ace
You should, it's lots of fun!
Thank you SO much for this tutorial, it was so easy to understand you, you explained everything so well, simple, clear, understandable, this was just what I needed, thank you very much for your tutorial :)
This is so cool! I love it, thank you!
Glad you like it!
amazing tutorial! thank you so much for this!
Just what I needed, thank you so much
Thats a smart way to make Toon Water !
Nice! It didn't work out how yours looks - instead I messed up some settings and created a water texture similar to Sonic Adventures from the Sega Dreamcast... Thankyou for the creative direction!
Thank you so much for teaching me this technique, peace
Thank you! I was looking for this!
No problem!
This is great! More please.
Any suggestions leave them in the comments!
awesome tut, thanks a lot bro
can i asking incase we wanna export it out to using in Unreal Engine, how should we export it ?
This is why im subscribing you
Love it!!
So glad!
GORGEOUS, Thanks m8!!!
Glad you like it!
Thank you very much
what a legend
this is an super tutorial 👍
Glad you think so!
AMAZING!
Thankyou!
Awesome!!!
any tips on how to get a foamy perimeter? Im making a winding stream, in my testing to outline the water Iv needed to create a seperate object. it looks alright but is pretty janky and takes awhile
🙏🙏🙏 Thanks for this tutorial
i love it thank you
You're welcome!
Wow !!!! You've really blown my mind with how simple you've made this look. Will it work with cycles also ?
Thank you very mucho. Is there a alternative to the Fresnel node so that waves can be seen from a top view?
Thx vor the tutorial! I'm wondering as others in the comment section how to loop perfectly this shader, if you can make an update it would be soooo apreciated!
Have a nice day! thx again ;)
nice tutorial, easy to follow
Those damn nodes drives me crazy really
How about making it interact with something threw into the water?
thanks you
How can I make a loop with this? It's for using this as an animated background. Many thanks!!
Simple and effective. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Thanks a lot!!
You're welcome!
Awesome tutorial, but I ran into 1 problem, when I add light (spot), the light will not reflect on the surface when pointing at it, but instead you can see the light reflection behind (under) it, anyone have a work around for this? thanks!
I have a problem: Everything looks great on the viewport, but when I render it, the transparentBSDF seems to not be working :S How can I fix this?
- SO useful - thx!! :^]
No problem!
When I put an object above the water, no shadow is visible, how can I fix that?
Hey how's it going? I saw this video and I was delighted with this effect, but I would like to know if there is a way to do these "caustics" in another way because my model, a lake, is not straight.
Might be a dumb question but is there any way I can make it all react to like a stick or something that's interacting with the water?? If there's a video anyone can point me to that would be extremely approciated 🙏🙏
Is there anything I should do differently for this project if I'm working in Blender 4.? It doesn't seem to be working the way its supposed to when I follow the steps you do. Specifically, it doesn't seem to do anything when I add the wobble driver, and the swirl effect from the F1 Voroni node doesn't go away and leave just the caustics visible. Any suggestions?
in blender 3.5 the "blend mode" and the "shadow mode" at 2:25 are not in the settings of the material but in Viewport Display -> Settings. I couldn't find it in the first time so, if it can help
Thank you
Question, is there a way to make it interactable with objects? Like to make ripples around an object that enters said water?
ua-cam.com/video/uOXagWeOAv4/v-deo.html
Probably with geo nodes and proximity, but im still too dumb to figure it out.
Vertex groups and planes for each object to follow the waves then just location frame set for where you want the objects to start and end at.
In have a problem when I copy the plane, when I tried to modify the copy's color it changes both planes, anyone know how to fix it?
Question why do mine come out really blury?
Can these textures and animation be transferred to Marmoset?
any way to get a loop out of this procedure?
how do i make it so it just just cut at the end of the animation? and so it continues or loops
I'm not getting the wobble effect at 2:05. I can make the water move, but it won't wobble no matter what I do.
question, at 1:20, it doesn't work for me. I don't get the same moving like you
(btw, hitting play is not the answer. It just doesnt work)
(okay what i just messed around, and after I clicked "delete drivers" and did it again, I DID IT!?)
how to export that to unity ?
So I turned my water effects into a node group but when I bring it into another project I can't change the color with the transparent node only with the color ramp does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
Question, my water seems to 'reset' around frame 1200. By reset I mean that the material seems to be starting up again and displays the way the water looks at frame 1. Any idea how to fix this?
i need an answer to this as well. it's not a smooth loop.
Is there a way to animate this as a perfect loop?
was thinking the same thing
Its possible putting some something to make a light reflect in the water?
There is shadow caustics in blender you can enable for the water, the "pool/rock" surface, and anything in the water to allow the shadow caustics to work masterfully like in real life.
nice
Thanks
Hello friend, I loved the tutorial but I had a problem. when I add the #frame/500 and want to move the Y value, I get this message "Can't edit driven number value, see graph editor for driver setup".
Is there a solution or is it because of the version difference?
I am having the same issue. :(
Try entering just
frame/500
In the x,y z positions
@@dimension-ji7xk yes this is right. Drop the #
it doesn't create a smooth endless loop though. i love the way the toon water looks but i don't know how to make a clean endless animated loop.
Is this possible to export to unreal engine? Do you think it will recognize all these settings?
wondering the same thing!!
So when I add the rock texture underneath, it shows through 100% - I cannot see any part of the water texture on top of it. Yet it shows up in the render. That being said, the colors are much, much darker than what I have them set to. Any ideas what's going on?
The answer is you have to add the image as a texture - not a reference image!
Also, for everyone having issues with the #frame/500, try dropping the "#" in front.

I have a question to you. How do you know all that? You didn't, in all seriousness, find out all that yourself by trying it out, did you?:D
No it's a combination of a few different videos
Shaders are a masterable art, once you get the fundamentals down, you can do a lot even without trying over and over too much...

I got a problem, when i put in mapping and write #frame/500 in x,y and z it won't move? plz help 1:17 and in 2:04. It just won't move at all.
Did u figure it out yet?

+Updated Info for Blender 4.0+
-For the animation drivers don't type "#frame/500" just type "frame/500"
-If you still have issues, try typing a number around .06, hit Ctrl + D while hovering over it, and just add the driver that way.
-Be sure to install Node Wrangler by going to: Edit > Preferences > Add Ons > Node: Node Wrangler. Look up a tutorial on how to use the basics of the add on and it'll help a lot!

Is this blender guru Talking?
can't get it wobble at 2:01
Had to change to 3.3.1 instead of 4.1.1, man why did they have to remove musgrave makes no sense
noticed the ai text to speech, but thats ok. I just couldnt get the same results following step by step.
The bottom shader should be white as the light is refracting more into those spots.
mine looks great but dont move :/
