Today I was in KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken, Hamburg main station). For 9,99 Euro you get a "mixed box" with different pieces of fried chicken, a middle-size French Fries and a 0,5 l drink. The taste of the chicken was fairly good, no reason to complain and you get fed up. Well, fast food is no solution for every day, but the price-performance-ratio was okay.
Different Topic: How will you guys handle the upcoming winter when you have to deal with the costs of energy? Seems there is a rather different perspective between the US and Germany. That whole Ukraine issue is virtually not in the public awareness/mind.
Unfortunately, the time of better prices is over. At the moment we have an inflation rate of over 7%. Everything has become significantly more expensive. Groceries, petrol, gas, electricity.
@@uebelgunne i agree completely. But with the exchange rate right now Germany is much cheaper than where I live in the US. I mean as a tourist bringing over dollars. With inflation in the US being above 9% i think it's never been a better time to go to Germany.

It's a bit insane, to be honest. Healthy foods are insanely overpriced, and even the crap food is not affordable. I try to get a few items and cook creatively. Never buy pre-made or eat out. It's just not doable here in the U.S.
Yeah it's always interesting looking at Aldi products in different countries! We liked some of the options in Spain. It was different than here in Germany!
When Aldi opened its first supermarkets here in Italy like 4/5 years ago,I thought that i would have find more German products,like Lidls here,but you'll find mostly Italian products (in my case),maybe it's just that they try to offer foods produced locally Not that it's a bad thing,quite the contrary,but it's curious at first
I feel the opposite; the USA Aldis have food I grew up with in America (peanut butter, cheetos, actual crackers) and in Germany it's mostly foods Germans prefer, cuz that is what sells in Germany. Also, in America, Aldis have bathrooms specifically for customers, what a luxury! If you had a German Aldi in America, you'd find all types of pork, plenty of hazelnut items, frozen Chum salmon, and you'd have to pee before you go shopping, cuz no bathroom. Aldi in America carries the good German chocolate, so you aren't missing anything.
@@LythaWausW I have not been in one single Aldi that had anything fresh, like the bakery. Also it is more like a super cheap off brand items. Occasionally I can find brand name German items. But I do shop there on an occasion, I will try things at least once and if I don’t like it I just don’t buy it again.
Breakfast points for Phil, as I can't have any sugar in my meals. Lunch points for Phil, because the wrap looked better than the salad option and Deana wins the last points for dinner.
I live in the Netherlands but I visit Nordrhein-Westfalen often with friend for a weekend or so. I keep being amazed by how cheap most things are in Germany compared to The Netherlands. I love going on a nice Nurburgring weekend trip with my friends and getting breakfast from Aldi or Rewe. Its incredible how two countries so close to each other can feel so different.
My wife and I are traveling to Germany gor the first time tomorrow. Just wanted to say thank you so much for your videos. They are very helpful for people who don't travel internationally.
Hallo aus Wiesbaden. You can really find great and cheap items at the bakery section of most German supermarkets (ALDI, LIDL, EDEKA, NETTO, etc.). From the 0,29 EUR Brezel the 0,50-0,70 EUR Börek to the 0,99 EUR Pizza Slice or the "expensive" "Schinken-Käse-Stange" (Ham&Bacon) for 1,50 EUR. There are also many vegetarian options now, like the Mediterranean veggies focaccia (1,99 EUR) or even some vegan items. And then you can find there many nice sweet pastries (like the "Apfeltasche" or cinnamon rolls or donuts etc.
In Poland (I live in Warsaw) probably 5-6 Euros would be enough for eating out on a budget.. e.g. a big doner kebab here costs just 3 euros., a sweet bun filled with apples (practically the same like Deana had at 4:18 is just 0.50 euro (4 times cheaper!).. a basic hamburger in McD is like 1 euro here., but instead try "Zapiekanka" - Polish popular street food (type of Polish pizza in form of a toasted open-face sandwich made of a sliced baguette or other long roll of bread, topped with sautéed white mushrooms, cheese and sometimes other ingredients such as ham.) , it's just like 2 euros... we also have so-called Milk Bars- canteen style restaurants which only serve Polish traditional dishes like pierogi, known for good quality, like home-made meals and really affordable prices.. e.g. two-course lunch (soup and second course) will cost you 4 euros maximum, vegan options are much cheaper.....remember that Polish people earn on average 1000 euros or even a bit less... you definitely should come and visit Warsaw! :)
To read about Zapiekanka makes me hungry. And I have eaten my share of Pierogi and they are delicious. Yes, defo try some Polish food. Hearty meals, love them!
Wow, things are still definitely cheaper there than in the US. I don’t ever remember getting a pizza for $5.00! I was very close to Frankfurt from 1985-1989, the Dollar exchange rate was $1.00 to 3.00 to almost 4.00 marks back then. Of course it fluctuates. I sure miss the fresh bakeries. ❤️. Of course you could eat in Australia for $15. Dominoes still have $5 large pizzas, Aldi have salads for $4 or $5 with meat. You still have $5 for breakfast. Cheese and bacon rolls from Coles are cheap. I bought a grain single bread roll the other day for 70 cents and got a $1.50 worth of cooked chicken breast and stuffed it in and had that for lunch on the run.
Great options from both for all three meals. Can't believe fresh made pizza was only $5. The Aldi's bakery options are great. Deana and Phil could even get dessert with what they had left if Phil didn't have to pay for that pizza slice.

Deana your salad was $2 Euros?! $5-$6 in USA. I’m shocked at the price difference. Especially since it was packed identical to ours. (USA) 😱 $5 for a pizza. That’s it. I’m learning German and moving to Germany. I wish. I’m a foodie food eater and love a great value & quality for my hard earned money. Come on USA,we can do better.
there are places in the south of Italy where you can grab a delicious pizza for even less.. I usually pay 3,20 euros/dollars for a takeaway Margherita in Catania / Sicily (pizzeria Del Centro - strongly recommend!).. btw coffee is just one buck :) and one kg (over two pounds) of fresh and absolutely delicious grapes bought from a local farmer on the street market - 1 euro :) most vegetables are also 1 kg per 1 euro (1 dollar)
You'd be amazed how cheap Germany actually is despite it being a first world country. Out of all European grocery stores, I find German grocery stores to be one of the cheapest and restaurants have very reasonable prices

2 euros for a salad like THAT, Deanna!? Consider yourself lucky. It costs about $5 for half of that in the U.S. (Colorado), and the quality here is terrible! Damn, I miss Germany.
Take a look at the price of pizza in Japan, especially in Tokyo. Equivalent to 30-40 dollars per pizza with delivery service. Mostly 24cm to 28cm in diameter.
As a german student, Not cooking for urself will result in much higher food expenses, like a currywurst for 3 Euro. Get a bag of sausages, curry ketchup and a few buns will result in around 6 Euro which equals to 6 portion, so you basically get a portion the same or bigger size for one third of the original prize. But obv you have to cook for urself, Im lazy too but this is why there are TK-products (which are often referred as the typical student diet ^^') or "frozen products" like 1kg of Lasagne for just 2 Euro or less or many other meals. I personally go for TK wings or chicken nuggets for 3,50 per kg instead of going to kfc/mc. It doesnt tast that good but it is waaay cheaper. Another thing which is already mentioned in this video is the bread section in supermarkets. You can get a huge bag of baked goodies for 5-6 Euro which will feed you easily for the whole day. Not healthy, but very cheap. Just gotta get used to eating nothing but bread for a day.
I love Germany, I live about 1 hour from the Dutch/ German border and often drive to for example Kleve for shopping, a Bratwurst and the danishes at a bakery or Aldi/ Kaufland/ Rewe. Maybe it's an idea to do a shopping tour in the DM, I'm sure the price difference with the US is quite big :)
Difficult to do in Cape Coral, Florida where 8 oz of yoghurt costs $1.49 before sales tax. You might be able to get a Cuban sandwich from a Cuban restaurant for under $10 or $11 for a Gyros sandwich from a Greek restaurant. One large slice of pizza costs $3.97 at a privately owned pizzeria, before tax. 1/4 of the size of your pizza. Ironically, there is a place called Bread Pete, a German bakery (lots of Germans in Cape Coral - they have an Oktoberfest here). They have freshly baked German breads, rolls and breakfast pastries most days - the pastries are about $3 after taxes. After taxes, you pay about $4 for a broetchen with bratwurst or ham, egg & cheese. The grocery stores are so expensive and only offer 'fast food' items between $6 and $12 before tax. So, if you ate yoghurt for breakfast and then bought two of the $4 roll sandwiches from Bread Pete for lunch and dinner, you probably could do it. I'd be hungry though! $20 a day is far more realistic!
I loved this challenge! The shops might be different but your choices were very similar to what I would have chosen as well. Overall I think I would have preferred Deanna's meals because I am one of those weird people who actually miss veggies when I don't eat them so the salad would have gone a long way to reducing cravings or feelings of lack on that small budget. The pizza looked amazingly authentic and tasty, but I also appreciated the look of Phil's sandwich. The sushi prices seemed low as compared to what we see in the US. Haven't seen a maki of any type for less than $8 for awhile now. Good choices for one day, but what do you guys think the sustainability of this challenge might be? Could you do the same for a week? A month? How creative do you think you would get by the 3rd or 4th day or even the 2nd week?

5 Euros for this freshly made pizza? In Düsseldorf? That is crazy value for money I'd say. It looks really good. And it's crazy cheap. Granted, I don't usually look for the price of a Margarita pizza, but a regular pizza with some decent toppings runs a tenner around here (Berlin, northern outskirts), easily, even at a pizza food truck.
Toppings are what cut into your budget. Most places charge 1-2€ just for one topping. 5 bucks for a ~26cm diameter margherita is pretty standard even here in Düsseldorf.
I've always wanted to try doing this challenge in Vienna. I don't really keep track, but I tend to be around 10-15 euros in a day with just snacks, like if I'm out working/going to classes and don't have time to cook at home. I have eaten so many of those paprika Taschen from Hofer and Spinat feta Tascherln from Ströck.
I love those salads and do just like Deanna, I bring them home and dress them up further with what I have in the fridge. They can stretch into a couple of meals, that way.
Nice Video :) I also would use the Aldi for breakfast in that challenge. For lunch i would probably go to REWE to buy something from the "Heiße Theke" (i know not every REWE got these, but were i live everyone has them). Maybe a Frikadellenbrötchen and a Fleischkäsebrötchen, each 1.50€ . So i would have left 6€ if the breakfast at aldi cost 1€. With that i can buy half roast chicken with fries. Cost 6€ as a menu at our local roast chicken food truck.
It is not grilled chicken. It is not actually grilled. It's called rotisserie chicken because it rotates while getting roasted. Just to not get people confused.

We moved to Germany from Hawaii (which is so friggin expensive) so the prices here are so reasonable. I live in a smaller village in NRW near the border with Netherlands so we don't have as many options to choose from for a "eat for $10 a day" challenge but hmmm... Id probably get a chocolate croissant from Kaufland for breakfast (that would cost like 70 cents lol), a chicken döner from the place nearest my house, that's 5 euros, and there's a place that has a really good currywurst and fries in the parking lot of the Aldi here and it's like 4 euros so I'd get that. :D (oh no I just looked up the prices of the currywurst place because it had been awhile...6 euros now...so I failed lol)

Exactly, I couldn't get McDonalds for 3$ for breakfast...I never knew how bad it has become. In Honolulu, the 1$ menu is just a cute name for 1.19, 1.29, and 1.49 menu items in the morning. And the 1.19 was just the cup of coffee, not food.

The last time that I ate out at a Restaurant was with my ex-wife in January 2019 . Then a few weeks later she had a bad fall in the kitchen that required her to have brain surgery because of numerous blood clotting. It affected her memory later and in January of 2021 she passed in her sleep of a abdominal aorta embolism . And I just can't bring myself to go to a restaurant to dine by myself since she passed. because we always enjoyed dining out at least once or twice a month togther.
Here in Puerto Rico it would be very hard to do this challenge if you want a meal that is actually filling. My boyfriend and I thought about it and the only way this would be possible here is if you ate from the Taco Bell or Burger King value menu. Healthy food choices and more local meals that are filling usually cost between $7 - $12 dollars. Business owners try their best to keep their prices reasonable but the government is not really in it to support local business owners and on top of that there is the inflation.

500g mixed minced meat from lidl + 3 or better 5 meals Miraculi -> BAM.. food for 2-3 days for about 6€ + 4€ for 6 0.5l Lidl Weizenbier is the best option for 10€ if cooking is an option. if not - go for Fries & Burgers meals and Döner. without schickimicki-stuff like cheese and cabbage and stuff, you still can get a döner for under 5€.
When I lived in Germany, it had the cheapest food in the EU 🇪🇺 (in supermarkets) but some of the highest salaries. Interestingly, Greece had the most expensive supermarket food, with some of the lowest salaries (this was definitely still true in 2020, when I lived in Athens) A pizza was 13-14 Euro.
When you are in Düsseldorf, you just have to eat a Schweinebrötchen at Schweinejanes, or even better, a Schweinshaxe :) I swear, I have eaten Schweinshaxe at lots of places, but that restaurant is the best BTW I think Deana's German has become much better, I can tell by her accent, her pronunciation has improved a lot over the past two years.
Hi. What about Kantinen or Mensa, if open to the public? Maybe a second part of the challenge? Would try: University, town hall, big companies, library, court, furniture stores,..... There are Bahnhofsmission and Suppenküche, too. But you should only use them if it's really necessary, not to experiment.

I would have bought bread, butter, sausage, cheese and jam from ALDI. In addition, pea soup in a can, 1 liter of milk and some vegetables. Döner already costs 5-6 euros here. Currywurst without fries about 3 euros and pizza 4-10 euros. pizza delivery service does not come under 10 euros minimum order value. I don't think you can get very far with 10 euros if you buy stuff like that. I know what I'm talking about. Lived and survived for some years with 80-150 euros per month (2,66 - 5 per day). Mostly there was canned soup or noodles with ketchup. From time to time there were 'meatballs' made only from breadcrumbs, eggs, milk and spices. Also 1 bag of potatoes (on sale 4kg 2 euros, sometimes 10kg for 4 euros), boiled or fried in oil, with onions and ketchup or some cream cheese with herbs. Water from the tap with concentrated lemon juice. A big help was a turkish doner restaurant, from which i got leftovers at the end of the day. Of course it was not healthy food, but I managed to survive.

I'm an expat in Switzerland and things are so expensive in this country my guess is you would need at least 20 bucks to be able tu fullfil your challenge. Even a frozen margerita pizza is more the 5 Euros 🤪 I'm curious to what your both food choices would cost me in Switzerland, we have Aldi stores too so I should be able to find all the goodies you had, plus the kebab and the pizza 😎
Well, Switzerland is really very expensive, compared to Germany. The Margerita in a German Pizzeria costs about 8 Euro. In Switzerland you will pay about 17 Euro for the same. I love Switzerland and it´s people but it is too expensive to visit it often
You should try the Terbuyken Bakery in Düsseldorf, way better than Kamps 👍🏻 And there are lots of better Pizzas and Döner in Düsseldorf too imo. You need to get around more 😉 Great video 👍🏻
12:20 So either you have it really good in D'dorf, or something is wrong. Here (outside of KA) I have a minimum order value of 10 € or more for all pizza delivery services. In addition, most pizza stores still want to have delivery fees of 1-3 €! Yep... that's why I only order where I don't have to pay extra fees, or max. 1 €. And in addition, all, really all, have increased their prices by 2-3 €! No matter what it is! But if I convert that, 10 € / day and that 30 days long, makes min. 300 € only for food in the month. Some people don't even have that today! So shopping and cooking yourself is clearly the cheaper method!
In 1978 my high school buddy and I took our back packs to Europe and spent 10 weeks there on $20/day. That included our food, drinks and lodging. We found that Northern Europe was more expensive then the southern part. We found the best deal was in the train station in Zürich Switzerland, for $2.00 you could get a bratwurst, hard roll, glob of mustard and a beer. We did sleep a few times in our sleeping bags in train stations with no problems. We didn’t have any money to buy souvenirs so we came back empty handed….but have great memories of our trip. I am planning to attend Aldi, Bakery for breakfasts and lunches and cheap eatouts for dinners in Frankfurt and Berlin. I can eat Asian, pasta, Japanese, Italian - vegetarian pasta or pizza seafood, Turkish, fruit, veggies, yoghurt, and some apple juice, lemonade, soy milk, water or white wine all from ALDI to enjoy and relax in the evening! Hinkel ist echt die beste Bäckerei in Sachen Brot. Probiert mal das "Dinkelsprösschen", das saftigste Vollkornbrot dass ich kenne. Die Hinkelsteine sind sehr leckere Brötchen und im Sommer müsst ihr den Sommertraum probieren, ein sehr leckeres Currybrot. Gebäckmäßig würde ich den Apfelberliner empfehlen und in der Weihnachtszeit machen die richtig gutes Spekulatius. Achja: Dene Gör ist tatsächlich der beste Döner in Düsseldorf
A Brezel for breakfast would have also been nice. Belegtes Brötchen are also good options for lunch or dinner. The salad from Aldi was a really good deal.
Aldi North and South is not just a German thing. Aldi North and South do not just split Germany in half but all of Europe and beyond. On their website you can see a map of what countries and regions are serviced by N or S. Düsseldorf, btw, is literally on the border between N & S. If you go to Wuppertal, you're already in North territory.

This video just blew my mind! Here in Brazil we pay R$ 30 (Brazilian Real) for a really small Pizza! I understand it occurs because of the currency but what a huge difference! You guys are amazing! Keep up with this amazing job here on UA-cam!

It's a bit insane, to be honest. Healthy foods are insanely overpriced, and even the crap food is not affordable. I try to get a few items and cook creatively. Never buy pre-made or eat out. It's just not doable here in the U.S.

When Aldi opened its first supermarkets here in Italy like 4/5 years ago,I thought that i would have find more German products,like Lidls here,but you'll find mostly Italian products (in my case),maybe it's just that they try to offer foods produced locally

I feel the opposite; the USA Aldis have food I grew up with in America (peanut butter, cheetos, actual crackers) and in Germany it's mostly foods Germans prefer, cuz that is what sells in Germany. Also, in America, Aldis have bathrooms specifically for customers, what a luxury! If you had a German Aldi in America, you'd find all types of pork, plenty of hazelnut items, frozen Chum salmon, and you'd have to pee before you go shopping, cuz no bathroom. Aldi in America carries the good German chocolate, so you aren't missing anything.
@@LythaWausW I have not been in one single Aldi that had anything fresh, like the bakery. Also it is more like a super cheap off brand items. Occasionally I can find brand name German items. But I do shop there on an occasion, I will try things at least once and if I don’t like it I just don’t buy it again.

I live in the Netherlands but I visit Nordrhein-Westfalen often with friend for a weekend or so. I keep being amazed by how cheap most things are in Germany compared to The Netherlands. I love going on a nice Nurburgring weekend trip with my friends and getting breakfast from Aldi or Rewe. Its incredible how two countries so close to each other can feel so different.
i find it the other way round. Living between Roermond and Venlo on the German side. I Love doing shopping and eating in Netherlands!

Hallo aus Wiesbaden. You can really find great and cheap items at the bakery section of most German supermarkets (ALDI, LIDL, EDEKA, NETTO, etc.). From the 0,29 EUR Brezel the 0,50-0,70 EUR Börek to the 0,99 EUR Pizza Slice or the "expensive" "Schinken-Käse-Stange" (Ham&Bacon) for 1,50 EUR. There are also many vegetarian options now, like the Mediterranean veggies focaccia (1,99 EUR) or even some vegan items. And then you can find there many nice sweet pastries (like the "Apfeltasche" or cinnamon rolls or donuts etc.
In Poland (I live in Warsaw) probably 5-6 Euros would be enough for eating out on a budget.. e.g. a big doner kebab here costs just 3 euros., a sweet bun filled with apples (practically the same like Deana had at 4:18 is just 0.50 euro (4 times cheaper!).. a basic hamburger in McD is like 1 euro here., but instead try "Zapiekanka" - Polish popular street food (type of Polish pizza in form of a toasted open-face sandwich made of a sliced baguette or other long roll of bread, topped with sautéed white mushrooms, cheese and sometimes other ingredients such as ham.) , it's just like 2 euros... we also have so-called Milk Bars- canteen style restaurants which only serve Polish traditional dishes like pierogi, known for good quality, like home-made meals and really affordable prices.. e.g. two-course lunch (soup and second course) will cost you 4 euros maximum, vegan options are much cheaper.....remember that Polish people earn on average 1000 euros or even a bit less... you definitely should come and visit Warsaw! :)
To read about Zapiekanka makes me hungry. And I have eaten my share of Pierogi and they are delicious. Yes, defo try some Polish food. Hearty meals, love them!
Wow, things are still definitely cheaper there than in the US. I don’t ever remember getting a pizza for $5.00! I was very close to Frankfurt from 1985-1989, the Dollar exchange rate was $1.00 to 3.00 to almost 4.00 marks back then. Of course it fluctuates. I sure miss the fresh bakeries. ❤️. I don't think it is possible in Australia too. Our Aldi isn't as good either. The doner I had for dinner tonight was 13 dollars.
Of course you could eat in Australia for $15. Dominoes still have $5 large pizzas, Aldi have salads for $4 or $5 with meat. You still have $5 for breakfast. Cheese and bacon rolls from Coles are cheap. I bought a grain single bread roll the other day for 70 cents and got a $1.50 worth of cooked chicken breast and stuffed it in and had that for lunch on the run.

Great options from both for all three meals. Can't believe fresh made pizza was only $5. The Aldi's bakery options are great. Deana and Phil could even get dessert with what they had left if Phil didn't have to pay for that pizza slice.

Deana your salad was $2 Euros?! $5-$6 in USA. I’m shocked at the price difference. Especially since it was packed identical to ours. (USA) 😱 $5 for a pizza. That’s it. I’m learning German and moving to Germany. I wish. I’m a foodie food eater and love a great value & quality for my hard earned money. Come on USA,we can do better.
there are places in the south of Italy where you can grab a delicious pizza for even less.. I usually pay 3,20 euros/dollars for a takeaway Margherita in Catania / Sicily (pizzeria Del Centro - strongly recommend!).. btw coffee is just one buck :) and one kg (over two pounds) of fresh and absolutely delicious grapes bought from a local farmer on the street market - 1 euro :) most vegetables are also 1 kg per 1 euro (1 dollar)
You'd be amazed how cheap Germany actually is despite it being a first world country. Out of all European grocery stores, I find German grocery stores to be one of the cheapest and restaurants have very reasonable prices

these are not American pizzas. German pizzas are 10.5 inches and thin crust and weigh about 10oz.

As a german student, Not cooking for urself will result in much higher food expenses, like a currywurst for 3 Euro. Get a bag of sausages, curry ketchup and a few buns will result in around 6 Euro which equals to 6 portion, so you basically get a portion the same or bigger size for one third of the original prize. But obv you have to cook for urself, Im lazy too but this is why there are TK-products (which are often referred as the typical student diet ^^') or "frozen products" like 1kg of Lasagne for just 2 Euro or less or many other meals. I personally go for TK wings or chicken nuggets for 3,50 per kg instead of going to kfc/mc. It doesnt tast that good but it is waaay cheaper. Another thing which is already mentioned in this video is the bread section in supermarkets. You can get a huge bag of baked goodies for 5-6 Euro which will feed you easily for the whole day. Not healthy, but very cheap. Just gotta get used to eating nothing but bread for a day.

I love Germany, I live about 1 hour from the Dutch/ German border and often drive to for example Kleve for shopping, a Bratwurst and the danishes at a bakery or Aldi/ Kaufland/ Rewe. Maybe it's an idea to do a shopping tour in the DM, I'm sure the price difference with the US is quite big :)

Difficult to do in Cape Coral, Florida where 8 oz of yoghurt costs $1.49 before sales tax. You might be able to get a Cuban sandwich from a Cuban restaurant for under $10 or $11 for a Gyros sandwich from a Greek restaurant. One large slice of pizza costs $3.97 at a privately owned pizzeria, before tax. 1/4 of the size of your pizza. Ironically, there is a place called Bread Pete, a German bakery (lots of Germans in Cape Coral - they have an Oktoberfest here). They have freshly baked German breads, rolls and breakfast pastries most days - the pastries are about $3 after taxes. After taxes, you pay about $4 for a broetchen with bratwurst or ham, egg & cheese. The grocery stores are so expensive and only offer 'fast food' items between $6 and $12 before tax. So, if you ate yoghurt for breakfast and then bought two of the $4 roll sandwiches from Bread Pete for lunch and dinner, you probably could do it. I'd be hungry though! $20 a day is far more realistic!

I loved this challenge! The shops might be different but your choices were very similar to what I would have chosen as well. Overall I think I would have preferred Deanna's meals because I am one of those weird people who actually miss veggies when I don't eat them so the salad would have gone a long way to reducing cravings or feelings of lack on that small budget. The pizza looked amazingly authentic and tasty, but I also appreciated the look of Phil's sandwich. The sushi prices seemed low as compared to what we see in the US. Haven't seen a maki of any type for less than $8 for awhile now. Good choices for one day, but what do you guys think the sustainability of this challenge might be? Could you do the same for a week? A month? How creative do you think you would get by the 3rd or 4th day or even the 2nd week?

5 Euros for this freshly made pizza? In Düsseldorf? That is crazy value for money I'd say. It looks really good. And it's crazy cheap. Granted, I don't usually look for the price of a Margarita pizza, but a regular pizza with some decent toppings runs a tenner around here (Berlin, northern outskirts), easily, even at a pizza food truck.
Toppings are what cut into your budget. Most places charge 1-2€ just for one topping. 5 bucks for a ~26cm diameter margherita is pretty standard even here in Düsseldorf.
its not really cheap, if i make myself a pizza, that can last a couple days and costs under 10 euros, this is expensive and not even good pizza
I've always wanted to try doing this challenge in Vienna. I don't really keep track, but I tend to be around 10-15 euros in a day with just snacks, like if I'm out working/going to classes and don't have time to cook at home. I have eaten so many of those paprika Taschen from Hofer and Spinat feta Tascherln from Ströck.

I also would use the Aldi for breakfast in that challenge. For lunch i would probably go to REWE to buy something from the "Heiße Theke" (i know not every REWE got these, but were i live everyone has them). Maybe a Frikadellenbrötchen and a Fleischkäsebrötchen, each 1.50€ . So i would have left 6€ if the breakfast at aldi cost 1€. With that i can buy half roast chicken with fries. Cost 6€ as a menu at our local roast chicken food truck.

We moved to Germany from Hawaii (which is so friggin expensive) so the prices here are so reasonable. I live in a smaller village in NRW near the border with Netherlands so we don't have as many options to choose from for a "eat for $10 a day" challenge but hmmm...
Id probably get a chocolate croissant from Kaufland for breakfast (that would cost like 70 cents lol), a chicken döner from the place nearest my house, that's 5 euros, and there's a place that has a really good currywurst and fries in the parking lot of the Aldi here and it's like 4 euros so I'd get that. :D (oh no I just looked up the prices of the currywurst place because it had been awhile...6 euros now...so I failed lol)

Exactly, I couldn't get McDonalds for 3$ for breakfast...I never knew how bad it has become. In Honolulu, the 1$ menu is just a cute name for 1.19, 1.29, and 1.49 menu items in the morning. And the 1.19 was just the cup of coffee, not food.

The last time that I ate out at a Restaurant was with my ex-wife in January 2019 . Then a few weeks later she had a bad fall in the kitchen that required her to have brain surgery because of numerous blood clotting. It affected her memory later and in January of 2021 she passed in her sleep of a abdominal aorta embolism . And I just can't bring myself to go to a restaurant to dine by myself since she passed. because we always enjoyed dining out at least once or twice a month togther.

Here in Puerto Rico it would be very hard to do this challenge if you want a meal that is actually filling. My boyfriend and I thought about it and the only way this would be possible here is if you ate from the Taco Bell or Burger King value menu. Healthy food choices and more local meals that are filling usually cost between $7 - $12 dollars. Business owners try their best to keep their prices reasonable but the government is not really in it to support local business owners and on top of that there is the inflation.

500g mixed minced meat from lidl + 3 or better 5 meals Miraculi -> BAM.. food for 2-3 days for about 6€ + 4€ for 6 0.5l Lidl Weizenbier is the best option for 10€ if cooking is an option.
if not - go for Fries & Burgers meals and Döner. without schickimicki-stuff like cheese and cabbage and stuff, you still can get a döner for under 5€.

When I lived in Germany, it had the cheapest food in the EU 🇪🇺 (in supermarkets) but some of the highest salaries. Interestingly, Greece had the most expensive supermarket food, with some of the lowest salaries (this was definitely still true in 2020, when I lived in Athens) A pizza was 13-14 Euro.

When you are in Düsseldorf, you just have to eat a Schweinebrötchen at Schweinejanes, or even better, a Schweinshaxe :) I swear, I have eaten Schweinshaxe at lots of places, but that restaurant is the best

There are Bahnhofsmission and Suppenküche, too. But you should only use them if it's really necessary, not to experiment.
All the UK Aldis don't seem to have fresh bakery. Lidl do and is pretty good (and affordable)

I would have bought bread, butter, sausage, cheese and jam from ALDI. In addition, pea soup in a can, 1 liter of milk and some vegetables.
Döner already costs 5-6 euros here. Currywurst without fries about 3 euros and pizza 4-10 euros. pizza delivery service does not come under 10 euros minimum order value. I don't think you can get very far with 10 euros if you buy stuff like that.
I know what I'm talking about. Lived and survived for some years with 80-150 euros per month (2,66 - 5 per day). Mostly there was canned soup or noodles with ketchup. From time to time there were 'meatballs' made only from breadcrumbs, eggs, milk and spices. Also 1 bag of potatoes (on sale 4kg 2 euros, sometimes 10kg for 4 euros), boiled or fried in oil, with onions and ketchup or some cream cheese with herbs. Water from the tap with concentrated lemon juice. A big help was a turkish doner restaurant, from which i got leftovers at the end of the day. Of course it was not healthy food, but I managed to survive.

Well, Switzerland is really very expensive, compared to Germany. The Margerita in a German Pizzeria costs about 8 Euro. In Switzerland you will pay about 17 Euro for the same.

12:20 So either you have it really good in D'dorf, or something is wrong. Here (outside of KA) I have a minimum order value of 10 € or more for all pizza delivery services. In addition, most pizza stores still want to have delivery fees of 1-3 €! Yep... that's why I only order where I don't have to pay extra fees, or max. 1 €. And in addition, all, really all, have increased their prices by 2-3 €! No matter what it is!

In 1978 my high school buddy and I took our back packs to Europe and spent 10 weeks there on $20/day. That included our food, drinks and lodging. We found that Northern Europe was more expensive then the southern part. We found the best deal was in the train station in Zürich Switzerland, for $2.00 you could get a bratwurst, hard roll, glob of mustard and a beer. We did sleep a few times in our sleeping bags in train stations with no problems. We didn’t have any money to buy souvenirs so we came back empty handed….but have great memories of our trip. I spent my 20th birthday over there

I am planning to attend Aldi, Bakery for breakfasts and lunches and cheap eatouts for dinners in Frankfurt and Berlin. I can eat Asian, pasta, Japanese, Italian - vegetarian pasta or pizza seafood, Turkish, fruit, veggies, yoghurt, and some apple juice, lemonade, soy milk, water or white wine all from ALDI to enjoy and relax in the evening! Hinkel ist echt die beste Bäckerei in Sachen Brot. Probiert mal das "Dinkelsprösschen", das saftigste Vollkornbrot dass ich kenne. Die Hinkelsteine sind sehr leckere Brötchen und im Sommer müsst ihr den Sommertraum probieren, ein sehr leckeres Currybrot. Gebäckmäßig würde ich den Apfelberliner empfehlen und in der Weihnachtszeit machen die richtig gutes Spekulatius. Achja: Dene Gör ist tatsächlich der beste Döner in Düsseldorf

A Brezel for breakfast would have also been nice. Belegtes Brötchen are also good options for lunch or dinner. The salad from Aldi was a really good deal.
They were in Dusseldorf Ria. Much too far away from Baden-Wurttemberg where the real Brezels come from

Aldi North and South is not just a German thing. Aldi North and South do not just split Germany in half but all of Europe and beyond. On their website you can see a map of what countries and regions are serviced by N or S. Düsseldorf, btw, is literally on the border between N & S. If you go to Wuppertal, you're already in North territory.
