I love the way you wear your hair in this video, its visible that the hair is overall long and looks feminine, but the face framing shorter strands give a neat contrast. Perfect solution and best of both worlds!
I love having short hair! It's the best feeling if you found the perfect short haircut for your face shape. But i got bored after having the same style bob haircut for years. So i growing out my hair for a year now, is almost below my chest. It feels different and gave a different vibe, especially since i'm a Soft Gamine, i know short hair is better for me. But i love both style. I really enjoy doing overnight curls right now ❤
My hair is short, at chin length currently. It does not suit me at all, I had waist length hair and lost it all due to months of chemotherapy for breast cancer (mid 2023 to early 2024). I want it longer but not waist length ever again. It has returned much thinner, and only now that it is slightly longer, getting my natural loose curls back. It will get there, eventually 😊 Thank you, Jenn, excellent information ❤
the timing is insane! For some reason, I also get the sudden urge of cutting my hair in January and also was playing with the idea untill I realized it wouldn't fit my current style (which is something you brilliantly said in this video and I never see anyone else mentioning when it comes to talk about going the short route). I was already planning on a date to go and chop it when it dawn on me that I often use my hair as another accesory while making outfits and I've been so happy with the way I've been building my personal style that short hair would abosulely change that. Amazing video as always!
Yes! Something I haven't mentioned in the video is that my style when it comes to clothes leans more masculine and I tend to use my long hair as a way to balance that out. It explains why I feel like I need a whole new wardrobe whenever I have short hair lol. Glad you found the tips helpful!
I wore mine in a tousled pixie for about 5 years. I really liked it a lot, but the pandemic, my hairdresser got sick, I broke my leg and ankle-just harder to get around, so I’ve grown it out. I really love it. Think I’ll keep it for now. Thank you for your videos. Yours is one of my favorite channels!
I had waist-length hair when I decided to cut it into a bob a year ago. I had some misgivings about it because whenever I'd had it shorter in the past, I loved the convenience but didn't love the look. Like you, I knew from experience that it would take two years to grow back. I decided to go for it anyway because I was so over the effort of long hair (thick and wavy/curly and very tangle-prone). This time, I freaking loved it. The difference was the cut itself - unlike the previous times I'd gotten a bob, this time I had a fringe (bangs). I'd already gotten the fringe cut with my long hair, and really liked how it drew attention to my eyes and downplayed the shape of my face, and turned out it was a game-changer for how I feel about shorter hair on me. The only downside is that my hair grows fairly rapidly, so it goes from short bob to long bob within a couple of months, and I feel the need to cut it more often.
Such good info! I love the practical advice. I also totally agree with the part about shorter hair looking more masculine on you, i think your current style looks the best on you. ❤
This is so timely! I have a trim scheduled at the end of the month, and I keep wondering if it’s time for a change. The main reason I wear my hair long is ease of maintenance and styling. Detangling twice a day and protective braids and buns are my go to. I love the simplicity of it, and really enjoy having long hair even if I don’t wear it down away from home. (It’s so floaty and cobweb fine that wearing it down in even a small breeze is an invitation to major tangling.) My braid is currently beyond hip length. Much as I like it, I am ready for it to be a bit shorter. Gotta resist the urge to pixie cut. Growing out all those layers is a mess that takes forever.
Love it very interesting ❤ once decided to cut my hair short and my proportions didn’t fit well with it. Now I’m considering to decide to color my long curly dark brown hair baylage blonde and your videos really help me a lot
Thanks so much! I love your videos! You are sooo well-spoken, you cover your topics so well, and despite appearances, many of your traits are quite similar to mine (disregarding age and size, I am probably a flamboyant natural, with light olive skin, a longer face, pointy chin, long philtrum, shortish neck and broad shoulders) so you touch on a lot of points I can relate to! And I am Canadian, too, although I have lived across the ocean for over 30 years! It's a delight to watch your videos and thanks for reminding me why I should continue with long hair!
An expert hairdresser can cut hair to suit your face and hair texture. I'm 54, silver vixen and just had a haircut. My hair grows quickly in a year, from just above chin level to shoulder length. Longer gray hair will pull any face downwards which is why shorter hairstyles suit older women. Gray hair also has a wiry texture that is not so easy to manage at a long length. Feathering the sides and back of a short to medium length hairstyle provides movement and a feminine softer look. If you want versatility then longer length is best. If you want easy maintenance, shorter hair is best. If you want somewhere in the middle, shoulder length is the sweet spot.
Having the urge now, eight months postpartum. I don't think I've ever shed so much hair in my life; I have bare patches of scalp, which is jarring on a visceral level. But since I know super short hair isn't my best look and I want to keep some length, I'll be happy with a neck-length bob (no bangs, long layers). Gah! Hair.
I tend to shed way too much hair when temperatures start dropping. Biotin made all the difference for me. A year ago around November/December, I discovered a small bald patch in the spot where my part and bangs meet. Started supplementing with 1 capsule of Biotin daily for about 2 weeks, and my hair stopped falling cold turkey. Since then I try to remember to take it every other or second day, and I hardly see any hair strands on my comb. Just throwing it out there.. :) With postpartum, could it be that your estrogen levels remain low? If so, things like flax seeds or fenugreek are 'phytoestrogens' that could help you replenish your estrogen.. (there are others if you look it up :) ). Anyway, good luck!
@AngryTheatreMaker if you are nursing, you'll want to stay away from fenugreek, as it ruins supply in 50% of women. There are other ways to balance hormones, like evening primrose oil capsules or compound prescriptions from your doctor, that will work better. It's worth noting though, that the precursors to prolactin and in general the things that promote a strong milk supply, will suppress the precursors to estrogen and progesterone. So you'll have to decide which you want to prioritize at this time.
I've been thinking about getting my hair cut (significantly). It's nearly to my waist right now. And, I'd like to thank you for talking me out of it. I had it cut in an asymmetrical bob many years ago and I'm not sure I want to go back to the daily maintenance. My longer hair is so much easier to style from day to day. When I had it short before, I'm not sure that it really suited me.
After a lupus flare and low dose chemo. I lost a lot of hair and had to get short bob. Unfortunately it doesn’t suit me at all. My hair was mid back and I honestly cried! Will take at least 4 years to grow back.
I’m older and tired of the chin to shoulder length haircuts with long top layers, which look flat and straggly as the hair grows out. My hair is losing its curl and density as I age. When I was younger I looked good with angled chin length stacked bobs that had eye level side swept bangs (I have a high forehead) or long layered cuts. Now I need to consider a short shag or stacked bob cut close to the nape.
In the last part of your video you showed a clip of yourself in 2022 with a bit of blonde at the front. I think this length looks amazing on you! It looks like it's sitting just above your shoulders, more of a long bob. I have a long face too, but with a lot of softness and low visual weight, and I find that shorter hair is better on me overall, but the sweet spot is just below chin length. Too short and it looks a bit out of proportion, too long and it loses the focal point, I think. I feel like it makes me look more glamorous or romantic somehow.
@@stylerefinement it sure is. I like the look of long hair on myself, and shorter too, but I can't stand when the hair is long and not controlled enough so it goes everywhere when I'm out, in the face etc, and then I will look like a complete mess :/ so I always have it in a bun, which is sad. if one have a long neck and broader shoulder and a short face, does longer or bob length look better?
I think it really depends on your priority if you have opposing features like you described, as well as your preferences! If someone has a long neck and broad shoulders though the length of the neck should be a factor that offsets the shoulder width to an extent :)
I’m 68 and have thin fine hair which now is long, the longest it’s been in 18 years. I know older women always get short hair but I’m lazy! I wear my hair in a French twist or bun and have a ton of hair accessories. It’s just so easy. If I want curls I mostly do no heat curls, like space buns on damp hair overnight. I also have keratosis on my scalp, they are benign but ugly and long hair covers them. So yes, I guess I’m keeping my long hair. I really liked the way you presented all the different things to take into consideration.
I love how you focus on proportion, but what about if your head is out of proportion with your body? I sadly have a tiny head compared to the rest of me yet other ladies have the opposite. Would that impact choice of hairstyle too and how?
You could try styles that would add more volume so the size of the head can appear more proportionate against the body if a small head is an area of concern for you!
I would also add another option such as a shoulder length bob. That would result in a kind of triangular shape and therefore create a wide horizontal line at the base. Or, might I also suggest a shoulder length cut with longish layers that flip and swoop to the sides (creating horizontal and outward lines/movement 😊.
I think your face is perfect 😊. I like long hair on you. For all the reasons you mentioned in your video in favour of long hair. Plus, your layered cut sometimes gives the impression of shorter hair when the longer layers are in the back. You can play around with it to make it look like a bob, too .🎉
I have a longer face and look cute in short styles but also noticed from photos that if I wear a jumpsuit with a sleek short bob, it can make my head appear really strangely small because my body is tall and lanky.
Same here. I do a bob but it has to have some volume on the sides and I like to wear it in big old Hollywood curls, to balance out the size of my body (height not width of body lol)
I would recommend layers or multi-lengths if wanting both shorter face and narrower shoulders. Such as a hime cut or wolf cut that frames the face shorter but is long enough to drape over the shoulders. Usually short hair if you don't mind it growing is low maintenance and budget-friendly (less product use), BUT... When my hair is short like bob-length, it sadly has an issue with one side always flipping outward (probably due to a whorl) and the rest flipping inward. It's "straight" hair but with a single big wave so that's why it does that. If my hair is longer, it's not as noticeable because there is more straight hair and gravity to balance out any unevenness.
I’ve been debating a hime cut!! My hair also does have that weird flip on one side which becomes far more noticeable with short hair and I don’t like having to target the area when styling.
Am not EXACTLY sure what you mean but i THINK i do because i also have that flipping out issue lol 😅 would having a deep side part - to make it look intentionally assymetric - help, you think?
Another great video! Thank you! Off-topic question: what face spray did/do you use in this video? Your skin always looks great and I’m looking for a nice finishing spray. Thank you!
I used the MAC Prep+Prime Fix+ in the video! I did switch over to the 24hr setting spray version recently and I like both - one is more hydrating (the original) but the 24 hr one is a bit better at shine control :)
Thank you so much! I may even have some of that stashed away but wasn’t ready to use it! Thank you and thanks for the reminder! Keep up the wonderful information! It’s appreciated.
In my early 20's I use to have a bob/lob and I liked a lot. But I was a lot more thin and I work in an office. With my face been more angular and the short hair I use to look more mature. Now in my 30's been more heavy and working from home, having elbow link hair helps me to look less round in the face and more long in the neck. And in some way makes me look more youthful
I hope you don't mind me asking, but I was wondering if you'd comment more on your description of your upper lip as being very straight. This is the second video I've seen you say that, and it confuses me, because to me, it seems that your upper lip is kind of mountain-shaped. It's the most vertical upper lip I've ever seen - the exact opposite of something I would call "straight"! I'm clearly missing something.
Actually what I mean is not about vertical / horizontal length of the lips, but the shape of the lines themselves in my upper lip. It's actually exactly what you said - my lips seem to have a mountain shape with defined peaks because the outline of the upper lip consists of very straight (not curved) lines, as opposed to the outline of my lower lip which has a rounder shape. Hope that clarifies what I'm trying to explain! :)
Thank you for this reality check Jenn! For all the reasons you explained so well, I must resist the urge to cut my hair. I have big as* naturally curly hair which always looks like a triangle when it’s short so…NO LINDA! No bob for you! 😂 I might change the colour instead.
It's always so tempting until you actually get the cut isn't it 😂 For me, I think short hair is going to be inevitable sometime this year as I'm trying to grow out my undercut and my hairstylist told me I'll likely want to go with an even length at one point 😭 At least I know it won't be so terrible on me proportionally!
I’ve been covering topics for the eyebrows series every now and then. I know they were kinda far and in between but I have 3 videos on them so far and another (last) one coming next week!
I sometimes miss my grown pixie look which was so effortless other than cutting for maintenance every 2 months. I have dense wavy hair and it'd fall the perfect way vs the frizzy medium length it is now. I want to tough it out and see if proper long hair would weigh it all down, if not then ✂️✂️✂️
I have my curly hair back to pixie for the 3d time after 8 years. People have always told me that it looks amazing for my face. My hair is so thick and curly and it swallows my narrow face if it’s longer
Hey Jenn, great content as always. I have a question abt this subject. I cut my hair very short a few months ago. I have a long face so i thought they would be a good fit for my face but since the width my hair gave me before my cut is gone the length of my face is emphasized. I also have a prominent lower face which takes attention away from my eyes. To kind of balance my lower third, i draw arched brows slightly higher so as to give my middle part more length. Any hair style suggestions for my face?
Am I understanding it correctly that you got a pixie cut and now the narrowness of the face is emphasized more due to the hair surrounding the face being gone??
@@stylerefinement yes jenn basically like pink. But now the length of my face and my U shaped prominent jaw are emphasized. And I also want to say subscribing to your channel was the easiest subscribe ever. I like the way you present the insightful information. I also sense an individuality in you that i dont usually see in other creators. Dont ever change Jenn. Thanks in advance.
I think you look gorgeous either way, the short hair does not bring out your masculine features imo but makes you look younger and more feminine in a playful, cute way. The long hair looks also faminine but in a more mature and "grown-up" way. And I don't think your shoulders/upper body is particularly broad or wide, to me you look pretty balanced.
I just cut my hair yesterday. I went too short but I haven’t expressed that to anyone bc I want them to think I like it 😂 the length is actually cute and it’s a great haircut, it’s just too short on me. It’s above my shoulders but below my jawline. It widens my face bc I naturally have a lot of volume. I’m remediating by clipping it half up with a claw clip and it actually looks so cute. Looks like this is my new hairstyle for a few month
@ there are subtle layers! That way it doesn’t have a triangle effect. But even with the subtle layers it just has too much volume and ends up looking like a Karen haircut 😂 like shirt in the back and long in the front. Even though it’s all one length
There is nothing more beautiful than healthy, styled hair. It beautyfies a woman of every face shape and every age. Cut your hair short only if you don't want to take care of them much or you dont have time for them
And I am so glad you dare to use the words masculine and these days, instead of this yin & yang that are just coverups for masculine and feminine when it comes to style.
I, too, fight the urge to cut my hair short! My hair is wavy curly and a few inches psst my shoulders. I have a long face (lower part is most prominent). Im not quite sure which haircut I will do.
I truly believe that some women complement and recommend short hair, because a very rare minority actually look their best in short hair. So if some other woman has short hair, the one - often long haired - looks all in all better compared to the woman who cut the hair short. I have often times had a very short and short and short bob and very often got compliments - only from women then. Even if it is so obvious that I look my best with long hair tied up. Because since I am a woman and want to look attractive in a feminine way, short hair that emphasizes my masculine features is never the most beautiful choice for me. And now I just hope my hair to grow FAST 😂
when i have the urge to shorten my hair, mostly due to dry ends, i cut it to the chest length... and it grows healthier without giving more masculine look
Just chopped my hair 3 inches yesterday to a long bob. I wanted to tell you that the plopping sound doesn't sound nice in my ears. It's quite annoying, sorry.
No! No! No! Please don't.. Keep it long but have it heavily layered so that it curves around your head and then feathers down over your shoulders. Sort of how you've had it this last year. I think it just needs shaping rather than cutting.
I really wanted to do a peroxide cherub curly cut but had short curly hair all throughout my childhood, which I hated. I'm honestly going to invest in a decent wig so that after I'm done with having short curls, off the wig goes, and my hair reaches lower back again instantly 🫡
I love the way you wear your hair in this video, its visible that the hair is overall long and looks feminine, but the face framing shorter strands give a neat contrast. Perfect solution and best of both worlds!
I love short hair- it looks chic and styled. I feel like long hair looks like a pioneer . lol
I love having short hair! It's the best feeling if you found the perfect short haircut for your face shape. But i got bored after having the same style bob haircut for years.
This video was great
Thank you for this! Have you done a video like this but for bangs? 😊
I do have an older video on bangs, but I think it’s time for a refresher ☺️ thanks for the suggestion! 💕
At 11:04 with the side by sides of different lengths on you, I do like you in the long hair best!
Maybe she means straight in a vertical way? Like this /\
Actually what I mean is not about vertical / horizontal length of the lips, but the shape of the lines themselves in my upper lip. It's actually exactly what you said - my lips seem to have a mountain shape with defined peaks because the outline of the upper lip consists of very straight (not curved) lines, as opposed to the outline of my lower lip which has a rounder shape. Hope that clarifies what I'm trying to explain! :)
@@stylerefinement It does! Thank you so much for giving your time to answer.
You remind me jennifer anniston and your mid length hair looks so good on you like jennifer
What a compliment thank you!! 😍
Jennifer Aniston?! Jenn is much cuter! 😮
I would love to see you with highlights around your face
Girllllll where is the eyebrow seriesssss
I’ve been covering topics for the eyebrows series every now and then. I know they were kinda far and in between but I have 3 videos on them so far and another (last) one coming next week!
@stylerefinement thanks Jen:)
I love having a bob but hate the grow out stage. always looks dragged down. So I've stopped cutting it too short.
Can you please make a long for long face
I have hair just brushing my shoulder and have noticed how much longer my neck looks when I wear my hair up.
Wow first time here 1 minute after posting hahaha
😍
I like my hair super short (to draw the eye up) or quite long because my neck looks so ugly and short with mid-length hair
Get a wig until the urge is gone!
So fascinating! I want to have short hair but I look like a bowling ball head …
HOW DID YOU KNOW?!
Now I have an explanation for the fact that I always felt shorter bob styles only ever look good on more petite and thin appearing women
Looks like this is my new hairstyle for a few month
subtle layers to lighten the volume in the ends could also be helpful in reducing the width! Just something to think about for your next cut maybe :)
@ there are subtle layers! That way it doesn’t have a triangle effect. But even with the subtle layers it just has too much volume and ends up looking like a Karen haircut 😂 like shirt in the back and long in the front. Even though it’s all one length
What about doing visible layers?
Yup I have a separate video on layers :)
There is nothing more beautiful than healthy, styled hair. It beautyfies a woman of every face shape and every age.
Cut your hair short only if you don't want to take care of them much or you dont have time for them
I don't like you in short hair. But I wouldn't say your face has masculine features. From my perspective you look super feminine and soft.
I want to cut my hair shorter because I think it's a better length on me. HOWEVER I will first grow it out until my waist
No! No! No! Please don't.. Keep it long but have it heavily layered so that it curves around your head and then feathers down over your shoulders. Sort of how you've had it this last year. I think it just needs shaping rather than cutting.
Long hair >>
I really wanted to do a peroxide cherub curly cut but had short curly hair all throughout my childhood, which I hated. I'm honestly going to invest in a decent wig so that after I'm done with having short curls, off the wig goes, and my hair reaches lower back again instantly 🫡
