Two things to day about the mining trip, that raw iron block and all the iron and tuff around it is part of a large iron vein, and can have around 2000 iron ore, which makes it a great find! the other thing is that you will have to go mining above y:0 for coal, as coal does not spawn below y:0 at all (which also makes deepslate coal ore an incredibly rare block, ironically)

Last time I found an iron ore vein, I got over two stacks of raw iron blocks... very profitable!

When you found compacted iron, it was actually an ore vein! If you keep mining you will find a ton of iron!!!

Fr i mined all of the iron in one of those once and got over 30 stacks of iron it was insane. Mining it took a whole day

@@iskall85 thank god they didn’t get you to set your spawn before you logged off. 🤣😂🤣 You really should have replanted all of those trees, from your original build site, preferably right in the middle of xisuma’s build area. 😈 There are definitely some very different views here of what constitutes a “starter base”. You won’t find coal AT ALL below Y zero. Mountains are your best choice for that. There are some city sized caves in this update though, so that should be doable. A deep hole covered by carpet, with spikes at the bottom, would be such a nice addition to Grian’s build. You should look into that. With the right setup, using signs and a piston, I’m sure he would get a deep appreciation for your effort. 😁👍

I've found that caving yields more diamonds than branch mining more quickly, because although diamond air exposure has been decreased, cave sizes have increased much more! Branch mining is still more efficient, but caving is faster
as much as I agree with you, the Hermits are all in close proximity this season, there is a good chance that most of the "exposed caves" have been looted early on. so the best option would be to strip mine to avoid wasting time on caves that have already been looted, plus there is a good chance that he can get an unexplored cave by strip mining too
In addition, he only wore leather boots for his armor, despite finding lots of iron. So, mob-free mining was best under the circumstances.
And, like a puppy dog, he was so happy to see everyone that he couldn't focus on survival and acquisition.
I've found that if I do go mining for diamonds though, I have much better luck on -58

I'm so hyped for season 9. Also when you found the compacted Iron ore block, that meant that there was an iron ore vein and if you keep on digging away at those, you can get some easy iron.

Starter Dirt House of Doom
You need to dig more vertically where you found that raw iron ore, follow the tuff blocks and you will find a ton more iron there.
Whenever i watch these people together, i always feel welcomed and actually safe for once, and i thank them for that, because i miss that feeling. Its fun to have friends, they show me that :)

ABout the diamonds, you need to find a “big” cave down low, and bring a bunch of torches. Then you’ll find a lot more.
No you get more by strip mining
diamonds don't spawn exposed to air much anymore. So you need to strip mine
Guys, guys, guys, you must've never heard of flooded caves.
It's true that diamonds generate less when exposed to air, but nothing was said about water.
You can find a lot of diamonds underwater.
And I must say, even if strip mining is faster, it is NOT a fun experience. Pre-1.18 mining felt pretty rewarding, as you were always finding something new, whether it's diamonds, lapis, gold, iron or even coal. In 1.18 however, strip mining feels like it's taking forever and overall is just an underwhelming process. You're mining for a very long time through tons of deepslate, which is also a bit slower to mine, and after minutes of not finding anything you would start to feel demotivated.
And also caves in 1.18 are MASSIVE, don't underestimate the chances of finding diamonds in them. They're lower, but they're not low.
@@limonlx7182 Honestly I find cave mining so much better in 1.18 for diamonds. In one massive cave I found over half a stack of diamonds in less than an hour and I only found 1 or 2 veins in a similar time frame while strip mining. Only thing to take into account really is that the exposed diamond ore veins have less total ores, but they feel more common to find than ever.

Loving the start of this season... and I feel ya on the coal scarcity, now you gotta head to the mountains for coal. Y=96 is the sweet spot for lots of coal!

Just a suggestion - you should become a mysterious hero on the server. You could supply the hermits with anything they need and such. It might be a fun way to spend the series. You could become like two face, flip a coin and heads is help, tails is prank. You could do each hermit in alphabetical order. Love watching your videos and can’t wait to see what you do this season!

For mining you should try going down a cave from the surface, as there will be more blocks exposed in the deepslate (which is hard to mine) so it is more efficient than branch mining

I'm glad you're enjoying playing on Hermitcraft! The starter base is great, it feels like something I could feasibly make myself when starting in a new world, don't get me wrong big builds right off the bat are exciting but it's hard for a casual player to replicate. Very nice episode

by the way if you go caving above -56 but below 0 you'll find tons more diamonds because now they are a lot more easier to find in caves. Also if you suface mine in the stony sort of mountains for iron and coal (like grian did) you'll find stacks upon stacks of iron and coal

It would be awesome to see you do an industrial area with another hermit like you suggested to mumbo in s7. I think a joint industrial area and shop with someone like tango would be great to see. And exploiting the gamblers seems to be a pretty good way to make some money in hc lol

40:43 paint that entire cliff face a bright, non-natural color, or a giant Iskall face, overlooking the spawn, so everyone knows where you live. This will create traffic to your home. You could include the two giant eyes already in place. Otherwise, you will descend into anonymity for the season. And nobody wants that.

Since stripmining is so slow in 1.18, I think it's way more efficient to explore caves. I think this was made on purpose because stripmining is really boring and players should be motivated to explore caves instead because its way more exciting.
No, they specifically changed it so diamonds spawn exposed in caves less.
@@gregb7881 Just because they spawn less in caves compared to the older versions, that doesn't mean stripmining is more efficient than exploring caves. Especially in the beginning when you don't have a fast pickaxe it's way faster to just explore one of these big caves.
They spawn less exposed, but you can see soooo much more area, it works out

Tip for mining diamonds: I would recommend just going caving. Dont bother with strip mining in 1.18
Risk vs reward, I believe there are a ton of mobs spawning in those caves even with the light level spawn reduction

Hey iskall, a tip is you’re more likely to find diamonds in caves rather than strip mining
Its faster and safer to stripmine. Especially if you mine on chunk borders.
