Aye, the RMS Olympic has the most intresting story to tell of all Ocean Liners. She is directly connected to the sinking of her younger sister the Titanic. The Olympic was "racing" the HMS Hawke and they collided. The Hawke punched a hole in the Olympic, sending the Olympic back to the shipyard for repairs. The same shipyard where the Titanic was still under construction. They had to pull a few construction crews off the Titanic to repair the Olympic. By doing that, that delayed the launch date of the Titanic...... if the launch date hadnt been delayed.... the Titanic wouldn't have hit that Iceberg. In WW1 the Olympic ran down a German U-boat and sank it! Search this lady's name. Violette Jessop.
I have seen the ship in Boston, but have yet to be able to tour it. US Lightships officially became "obsolete" in 1984. At last count, there are 14 surviving in the the US. Many of them are well preserved museums and open for tours. I am the curator for LV118 (Overfalls) in Lewes Delaware.
Well done!!
Thanks Gavin!
