Can i just say you did NOT fail at making the 911 scene feel sad. I had an OVERWHELMING feelings of dread during that through the end. It felt very futile. When I first watched it I wasn’t “scared” but I left with a very empty feeling. And then I got scared later when thinking about the movie.

I watched it last night. My 3 y/o has that exact same phone which always gave me the creeps. She’s running around the house dragging it with her as I write this 😶
I love & hate the fact that Kyle didn’t talk about his meaning on the movie. For me its child abuse but there’s a brain tumor theory that also makes a lot of sense. This one led me to believe that the fave at the end was Kevin’s mom welcoming him to the other side.
Either way, Skinamarink is a masterpiece. 🖤

A bit late to the party but I hope Skinamarink goes down as a classic as it rightly should, this is the most terrifying film I’ve ever seen in my life and it’s not even close, the way this film made me feel no other horror has ever came close to that feeling. Skinamarink asks a lot from its viewer but if you play your part then you will be rewarded. Skinamarink is a petrifying story but a lot of people seem to miss it’s actually an incredibly sad story as well. I can not wait to see what Kyle Edward Ball does next and I am so happy he is sticking to horror in general but experimental horror because Skinamarink has converted me to the experimental side as I really enjoyed this film.

Next to Ari Aster, this director is turning the tide of horror and taking it out of the glossed up, miss the mark, corporate feel of this genre...which has long thirst for a change. Omg, watching the trailers of soon to be released horror films (Scream, Evil Dead, Knock at the Door), before this film started, I was so uninterested and unimpressed with the slick, fast as a bullet jump scares and camera shots, the loud, terrible sound in general of these films. Skinamarink's primal silence and ambience was more than welcomed. I loved it. Hope it's eventually released on bluray.

The first time I watched it I wasn't sure I liked it. I was uneasy but confused. I've watched it three times since then I absolutely love it. I've recommended it to all of my friends who like horror, even insisting that they just need to come over to my place and watch it so we can discuss it after. It really brought me back to being a kid in a chaotic home and being caught in a loop of things being upsetting/trying to block it out with books or TV/trying to get help. Really, this movie is amazing! Can't wait for the physical release!

Interesting that he felt strange/bad about the film at points! I think that happens to directors more than you would think, especially with really dark material. I consume so much very bleak media that I never think anything of the person creating it. But it is sobering to hear Kyle outright say "I felt bad." Fortunately it is fictional and no one was harmed and it is an incredible work of art. It scared me for 2 weeks after, I slept with the lights on. Great interview!

The Twilight Zone Movie segment that he drew inspiration from for Skinamarink instantly made black and white 1930s cartoons just randomly playing in the background creepy for me.

So I’m glad Kyle didn’t reveal any definitive interpretation. I prefer the what I call The Coma theory. But, at the same time there’s evidence that there is actually an entity that has taken these kids into some pocket dimension to torture them.
I loved this film. It’s already in my top 10 list of best horror film of 2023.

Great movie hard to watch but totally worth it. See it in a theater if you can! Immerse yourself and feel your way through it. So much formulaic dumb low IQ “horror” churned our yearly that doesn’t scare, doesn’t require a thought and doesn’t offer anything. This is the opposite. And so simple! Yet devastating…. Really impressive work.

@@splattercastpod agreed - and it’s funny I think you guys mentioned Terrifier 2 somehow that also ran through my mind as the only other film I’ve seen in years that really bothered me and yet how opposite these two films are, like two ends of a full-circle. One so violent and overt (yet kind of mindlessly silly and sophomoric) the other so minimalist and obscure and almost boring… yet both create genuine feelings of dread.

My interpretation was that both Kaylee and Kevin may have been enduring physical and sexual abuse from their dad. He was playing twisted psychological games with the both of them like the “look under the bed” scene Or when he says, “I want to play” referring to the LEGOS and then the teddy bear(or bunny?) drops to the floor. Abusers like to embed cues into their victim’s mind thus making them connect exact moments when said abuse will occur. As Kaylee states,“I feel strange”. Kaylee most likely spoke up about this abuse and ended up with the punishment of no eyes or mouth in her afterlife body/vessel; she can no longer “see no evil nor speak no evil”. Reminiscent of the kid that had his tongue cut out for “speaking evil” in Wes Craven’s film, ‘The People Under the Stairs’.
Another implication of sexual/physical abuse is that of their mother appearing at the edge of the bed with her back turned, she can’t even turn around to look her daughter in the face, as she carries a lot of shame and had become very aware of the abuse her husband had been dishing out, perhaps even partaking in the abuse; as she states to Kaylee, “close your eyes”.
There’s a film from 1988 called ‘Nuts’ featuring Richard Dreyfuss that immediately came to mind; the story is a woman kills a guy in self defense and then the whole film revolves around a courtroom drama. It’s revealed that her father was sexually abusing her for years. Before the Sex acts would occur he would give his daughter money to keep her quiet and her mother was very aware of what had been going on. Underrated film, IMHO.
Also, when the toilet disappears then two buckets appear, it immediately made me think of a news story where a couple in Florida had their child chained up in the basement and he was enduring years of abuse. One of the things the police found when they recovered his body is a bucket that he had been given to use as a toilet.
The stair fall scene with Kevin, right before he falls Kaylee asks, “are you hiding?”
Why would Kevin be hiding if Kaylee said to her dad that he was sleepwalking when he fell? as their dad claims on the phone call. I think perhaps it was a demon(dad’s inner demon) inflicting one of his many abuses. The “put the knife in your eye”, slashing blood on the carpet and bloody window(or wall?) scenes are implying their murder, as dad went on a rampage then takes his own life. Kevin does muster up the strength to call 911, but drops the phone, perhaps that was the moment he passes over.
The family has been in a sort of home bound purgatory(doors disappearing, toys floating, cartoons on repeat loop), but then their guardian angel(look up angel number “572” in numerology) at the end appears to free the children’s soul, as she states “go to sleep” as if to say you can go to the light now, children; or maybe they go to sleep wake up and the same cycle repeats over and over. I’ll stick with the they went to the light theory, as gives me more closure to this interpretation.

@@splattercastpod it was pure hell and what’s so interesting is that playing creepy old cartoons is not a new idea for horror yet somehow the tortuous repetitive droning of it in this instance combined with the suffocating ambiance already taking place made it feel totally new and unique as an instrument of aural torture and foreshadowing and overall scary childhood horror and not a trope, another really impressive aspect of this film. So many aspects could’ve been cliches but somehow masterfully used here felt authentic and profoundly disturbing and original. So much detail and so much intention behind so many details and they all add up together to harm you - nothing feels clicked or out of place with anything else it’s like a horrible tapestry it’s all interwoven so seamlessly. So minimal yet so powerful. Can’t say enough….

It was amazing to see something this experimental playing on the large screen. This reminds me of my two features: Public Access to the Cosmos and Panacea.
