Tip i learned from why u attempt the effect awhile back is to remove the mouths. A flat surface there will take your already amazing bust to the next level with the projections
Nice job. I remember seeing this as a little boy at Disneyland in the late 60s. Special effects, CGI etc were not common things back then so it seemed pretty magical. Even as a boy I knew it was done with technology but that and other aspects of the haunted mansion had "how did they do that?" aspects.
I live in a bad neighborhood and the projector would get stolen by a crack addict…..so instead…..I plan on applying Elmer’s Glow-In-The-Dark-Glue on the busts and putting them in my window rather than outside…..THANK YOU FOR THE CREATIVE IDEA !
This is awesome!! Amazing job and great tutorial! Starting on this project for this Halloween! Thanks so much for sharing!! Did you happen to have a longer loop source video for the singing heads? I only see minute long versions, but nothing more.
Thanks for watching! I can certainly put together a longer loop! I’ve been quite busy over the summer, but have an entire fall lineup planned, so stay tuned!!
Hello there. I love your work! Excellent! I definitely don't have the skills to pull something like this off, but admire folks who do. Say, I saw in one of your videos that you were asking for ideas.... 😁 I'd be ecstatic to see a tutorial on how to do the lady in the Crystal ball... that would be awesome! 🤗👻👍
Hi, thanks for watching! Along with the ghost bride, I’d love to do a tutorial on that one at some point! If not this Halloween, definitely next year!!
Hi, for this video I used a standard movie projector (I believe it’s a wiselaser) but there are a whole bunch of options that will work perfectly! The audio can be found on UA-cam if you search “haunted mansion soundtrack”. I hope this helps!
The projection is from a video taken at WDW, and was mapped to fit specifically on the models I created, so some sizing adjustments may have to be done in Adobe Premiere Pro or some other software to fit your busts specifically.
I did this for a trunk or treat about 10 or 15 years ago. Made the busts out of clay. Came out awesome but loads of work. Would be much easier now that I know how to use film software.
Hi there, Love the creative way you made them. Where did you get the projection ? Over here in the Netherlands it is hard to Find great contant like that. Halloween just is not that populair yet! But it is getting beter 👍
Hi! Thanks for watching! You can find the projection file in the video description. I’ve also recently released a video tutorial on making the projection yourself! I hope it helps! ua-cam.com/video/wXWNX9Cc0wo/v-deo.htmlsi=1DD44SayubzcekqO
That really depends on the projector you’re using. Mine is about six feet away, but the distance really depends on the throw ratio of your projector. You’ll definitely want to find one with a shorter throw ratio so that you can minimize the distance between the projector and the busts, though that depends entirely on preference, and whether you want the projector near or far.
Very cool. Also if you smooth the mouth a bit, (removing the lips) and lids, the projection looks a lot better on the smoother surface. The Haunted Mansion does this on their busts.
I followed your instructions and made two sets of heads but I have yet to find a long enough video to play on my mp4. Can you please direct me to a video so I can set up my newly made stone heads? Loved this project and thank you for putting it together for us Haunted Mansion junkies!
Hi! Feel free to download this UA-cam link: ua-cam.com/video/3WLfpeNiIIw/v-deo.htmlsi=KtmeBIPxDAPa6bgD From there, you can use an editing software to make it loop as many times as you’d like! I will also soon be posting a tutorial on creating the projection yourself, so stay tuned!
This is a truly EPIC Halloween set piece! Liked and subscribed, definitely having a go at these as im a prop and model maker by trade and i really like the simplicity of the build. I also have projectors and have done digital decorations and the living portraits as well. My question is where do you acquire the animation for the show? Much appreciated!
The projection that I made and used can be found in the description! However, I intend to make a more in-depth video soon to showcase how one can create the projection themselves.
@@wdwathome71 last question if I may, is there anywhere else to get the animation from as I don't really want to sign up and pay on UA-cam for what is only a one off? Thanks.
Hi, I’m glad you enjoyed the tutorial! You can find the bust projection in the description, and I intend on making more in-depth videos on aligning the video with the busts!
I just based the bust size around the 11” styrofoam heads, using pictures from the ride for body reference. The finished products are definitely not as large as the actual ones from the parks, so I sculpted the bodies in proportion to the heads I had.
@@wdwathome71 thank you! Did you have any problems with the mannequins having a defined mouth? I know the ride version has a smooth surface so the projection mouths can move. Is this an issue at all?
@@austinhenning6271 I didn’t notice too much of a problem once it was dark out and the projector was on. I imagine that the lighting and projector strength are important factors. From the side, the projection can be slightly distorted by the mouth, but not by much. Although I considered smoothing the front, I figured that leaving the face structure would help the busts look realistic during the day (hence why I also chose to spray paint them).
Just found this tutorial and I LOVE it. Bought the Doom Buggie from Lowes for the yard and this will be great next year! Amazing! Is there a link to the supplies listed in the beginning? I want to get the right styrofoam heads. Thanks :)
Hello! As of now, we are not currently selling these busts pre-made, but this may change in the future as the channel continues to grow. Thank you for your interest!
followed your great instructions only to find out the projection file does NOT line up with the broken bust. The broken bust is higher than the completed figure. Frustrating trying to get the 5th aligned to the other four. Tried another projecton file. Still no joy. The effort continues.
As noted in the video, the file was designed specifically for my build, and may need to be altered slightly to fit your designs. It also took me a while to get the fifth aligned with the rest, as it would require a projector with a particular throw ratio. If you’d like, feel free to email me the picture of your busts, and I can try adjusting the image for you. I’ve also found that if you angle the two busts on the sides to face slightly inward, that helps a ton. Sorry for any inconvenience with the projection!
This video is meant mostly to cover how to build the busts themselves, and the projection itself is in the description. Stay tuned, though -- a video on mapping the projection will be coming soon!

I can try to make that. When I created these I sort of just eyeballed it, but perhaps I’ll make a template in order to make it even easier.

What do you dunk the plaster sheet in please?
Just water! That makes the plaster wet and flexible, and when it dries, it dries to the shape of what you're sculpting!

No software was used, just a video played through a standard projector!
