Reaction fire at point blank? I was under the assumption that reaction fire to a charge is worked out from the point the charging squad is starting its assault? In this case behind the soft cover.
I have missed this show but after watching this and all the rules being wrongly shown is not really great for the game. First charge should of been shooting at 4+ due to the charging unit being in soft cover, as you resolve the fire at the start position of the charging unit. Not 2+ as a point blank result would cancel reaction fire. Due to surprise charge. Second charge, Americans would not be allowed to react fire due to being too close which you knew due to being able to fire point blank beforehand as a play test. For me though, it depends on what units you are, as a British para player. Charging is not the best option. Unless I have a clear advantage in numbers, position or SMG's (of which I am only allowed 5) This might need to be explained better. Cheers
The shooting at cover rule doesn’t make sense in this case as the assault requires running across open ground. Why shoot at the start when behind cover?
So I don't play Bolt Action (I've been tossing it up between this and FOW), but John's response to Justin saying "...sometimes you have to get stuck in with your trench knife", was that you can tell the German player in the room. Are the German's close combat focused? Does Bolt Action play like W40K in that armies are themed shooty, close combat, etc...?
WahooWarrior At the moment I'm getting into Malifaux because I don't need many models to play. My next thing will most likely be Bolt Action, although I'm still interested in FOW. Unfortunately, I never did get that question answered. Would you happen to know? Are you familiar with the games?
Yes I play Bolt action almost exclusively and have been making battle reports on it. In Bolt action the armies themselves are really pretty balanced, the German army itself has no close combat troops that are any better then any other nationality. they have some army options for taking veteran squads with submachine guns and Assault rifles and can make their SS squads have a unit that makes them fanatic which means that they fight to the last man. Some of the better close combat troops are in the British army mainly the Ghurkas, and they can take Commandos that have a tough fighter rule. the tough fighter rule gives each of your models two attacks in close combat. Most of the major Nationalities have an entry that can be geared for close fighting such as American veterans with tough fighter or Soviet veterans or a squad that can upgrade their weapons to assault class weapons like SMG or even shotguns. All in all no Nationality has a distinct advantage over another. there are some Nationality special rules that can come into play but there is no Have to have build or nation to win. Another nice thing about Bolt action is that you can get started at a relative low money amount, buy an infantry box set, make the models and play some 500 point games that are very fun. for around 30 dollars you can usually make 2 squads of infantry, a support weapon, a Lieutenant, and maybe a Bazooka or something, all made from the basic infantry set.
WahooWarrior Yes, I've looked into the price level, it's pretty awesome. The main rulebook from bookdepository.co.uk is only $38-40 AUD depending on the exchange rate, and I think the Wermacht infantry squad is about $60 at my local games store. Paints I've already got, so for $90-100 I can start playing. With 40k your looking at something like $500 minimum to get into a 500pt game.
Its disturbing to see THE rule Guy getting the rules wrong. Assaulted units don't get to shoot if the chargers start within 6" (AKA Point blank)
dont forget the 1d6 regroup movement after close combat. and charges through rough terrain reduce your charge move to 6".
I am glad this show is back! I had read online it had been cancelled!

+Ajax 1983 did you ever decide to get into Bolt Action? Did you ever get your question answered?

And I shouldn't forget the Japanese! they can make a very close combat orientated army list.

Surely the first combat is defending an obstacle and would happen simultaneously?!
What game is this and where can u but it
Bolt Action. It's by Warlord Games. Great game the dice/order mechanic is very cool and unique.
New player with Soviets and I always assault.. just because :) 11 man squads full of smgs makes you want to do that.
Not charging a unit heavily pinned! Nonsense surely you want the unit pinned down before charging in??
As a German and my MG is still working, I shoot.
Assault! Always assault!
