    After a long while of putting my own table together for Bolt Action, I think there's a hard cap on how much hard cover you can have (except for city fights). Too much hard cover can leave a shooting fest going stale, as it gets incredibly hard to shoot things and advance on the enemy.
    Having a few tactically important positions, maybe 5-6 hard cover spots then the rest of the board with large splotches of soft cover has made my games a lot more interesting. It creates a more diverse mix of holding positions, but also more willing to move out of an entrenched position under soft cover to try and take some more ground.
    My 2 cents.

      Depending on what you're trying to do, use smoke to cross open areas. Locate the enemy positions and pop smoke in their face which allows you some freer movement across fields or crossing roads.

      I played a game at a tournament.
      This one table had a huge 12x24 inch building in the middle of the table.
      He played one penny behind the building, i placed one penny i front of the building.
      We both played for a draw because neither one of us wanted to split our armies into 2 halves to duke it out on each side of the mammoth impassable that covered half the board.

    My local game group came up with a "house rule" to make trees more effective. We put down green felt "templates" much in the way a certain major Sci-Fi war game does "area terrain". We then plop a few trees on it to make it look good. In game effects what we do is treat the entire "tree template" as immobile, permanent, smoke. Therefore you can only see 2" into or out of it, and grants light cover to any model partially in it. To fire OUT of the tree line without penalty, simply have your base partially OFF the template so that your line of fire doesn't have to pass through any part of it to its target. Suddenly, large or medium tree templates offer a lot of cover and cut up a lot of the line of sight on a table.

      We play kinda the same, we make trees and forests light cover and then firing out of trees has no penalty

    The only problem I have with tables is houses. Plastic house kits are too expensive so I resort to making my own stuff from foam board or card board. Kinda wish they talk about cheap ways of making or finding terrain pieces.

    Oh, really cool table, by the way! :-)

    Love these videos. I'm serious considering selling off my WAY overpriced Warhammer miniatures and moving to Bolt Action. A huge number of players at our local store have done exactly that due to the cost of Warhammer.

      I've stopped with a space marine battalion, I might by guilliman and that's it but I managed to buy enough bolt action stuff to play 1500ish games for about 100 quid. My 4000 points of Warhammer has cost me nearly 400 quid.

    • @modularcuriosity
      @modularcuriosity 4 роки тому +1

      @@clearsight456 Even $400UK for 4000 points seems cheap. I have about 800 points each of Space Marines and Death Guard and I'm already at about $350. I was building a list on BattleScribe and realized that to fill out a Battalion for both sides I need another $350 and that would only put me at 1275 points for both. Yeah, it's pricey.
      As much as I like the over the top lore of Warhammer, Bolt Action is looking far more accessible. Especially since GW just announced that the $40 space marines book I bought just 2 years ago needs to be replaced with a new $40 Space marines book and a $30 Ultramarines supplement book.

    Do you think that table will work for 40K 8th ?

    Gents,Sorry this is a Bolt action rules comment. Riddle me this, at the 4:15 mark you demo running over an obstacle, how is this possible? RAW you clearly cannot do unless making an assault. I was recently corrected on this at an event and admitted I was wrong. A bit frustrating when you put these videos out with mistakes.Terrain does look great though!

    • @Vlad65WFPReviews
      @Vlad65WFPReviews 6 років тому

      I agree. The video did inspire me to create a Normandy table with much denser and more satisfying terrain - but then I wasted time trying to find an FAQ on the run-over-hedges-if-you-are-in-contact comment which just ain't so.

    I tried to play bolt action and I fell victim to a teacher who used scenery and placed them in his favor. Then when I tried to use crenades to clear him out of buildings I was told I couldn't

    Why are some bolt action 56mm and some 28mm? I'm new to this, which one do I buy or does it matter? I looked on amazon and seen 28mm and 56mm and was confused not sure which starter set is right.

    • @clairem55

      They are all 28mm which is the equivalent of1/56 scale

    Help me how do grenades feature in this game. Assaulting buildings it becames essential. Its part of standard training.

    • @Hambone571
      @Hambone571 5 років тому

      I made a house rule for grenades, and how many can be carried. They can be thrown 6 in max. A hit would be a die roll of a 1, 2, or 3.
      If a hit is made, roll a die with 1s and 2s (obviously) three 1's and three 2's, per hit for casualties.

    • @slimjim7411
      @slimjim7411 Рік тому

      It's irrelevant as when a unit assaults you just assume they're throwing grenades, running in shooting, etc. There are other books out there with far more in depth rules but then you're in a 8 hour long game and not a 2 hour game. Some of them go all the way down to tracking ammo on units, etc.

    My back hurts just watching. Their table is way to low for my tastes of “comfortable” playing. That bending over is hard on an, “old man.” LOL.. Great videos, though, great games., great explanations. Keep up the good work guys. I have about $3-4000.00 worth of stuff.

    to be honest i hate those hedgerows. i much prefer my own and/or the terrain guys method. to more expensive, not really modular and takes far more time. but the results if done right will blow you away!

    i really hope they don't do a berlin battle game. they will just throw in big heavy tanks for the germans. only 5 tiger 2's fought there and it was after hitler suicides. plus majority of the germans that didnt surrender immediately were volksturm, hitler youth or ss
