    Pretty good video except you should always set the left drum first using a vise grip on the torsion tube making sure the cable is tight and then set the right drum then add tension to the springs. If you do not you could end up with a crooked door meaning the right side is off the ground a small amount when the door is in the down position and if that is the case your door will not run true in the tracks causing alignment issues. I am an experienced service technician and have done this the way that is shown in the video and using the vise grip method, both methods will work if you know what to look for, If you have not done this before then use the vise grip method for better results.

    This is by far the best most inclusive install garage door torsion bar, bearing, and set spring tension video on YT. And I watched 100’s of them. Well done!!

    Thanks a lot, nice video. Why not raise the garage door all the way up to take the tension off of the Springs instead of using the winding bars.? Then you wouldn't have to mess with the springs. Maybe I don't have access to the side of the garage door if it's too wide and binding up against the wall

      That’s exactly what I did and saved me the trouble of messing with the torsion springs. Saved a whole lot of time.

      Just to make sure I understand your procedure. 1) Raise the garage door all the way up, 2) Remove the 3 bolts on the existing end bearing plate, 3) Remove the existing end bearing plate by lifting the shaft, 4) Insert a new end bearing plate, 5) Install the bolts. Any additional steps/cautions I need to take? Thanks.

    What type of bearing plates do you use in this video?

    I have watched a lot of your excellent videos. I have a problem with replacing the end bearings b/c it will not fit the shaft. I thought I might have flared the end b/c I had to beat it out with a hammer. I have filed and sanded it quite a bit and it will just not fit. Should I cut off a small slice with a hacksaw or something? The weird thing is I have checked both ends with a digital caliper and it SHOULD fit as they are identical. Both the left and right ends fit on the right side with no problem.

      I sanded the bar a bit more and finally got it to fit.

    Why not put both springs in neutral remove said bearing plate obv youd have to re tension cables which is easy and then re tighten springs

  • @427Sparky

    Why don't you just support and clamp the torsion rod and remove the bearing plates without having to loosen the torsion spring ?

    1) You did not show that you must have unbolted the center support, how would you have been able to slide the whole shaft to the left with the center support bracket still bolted to the wall?
    2) How much spacing do you leave between the cable spool and new bearing?
    3) How do you set up both cable spools so you know they are clocked together and begin lifting at the same time?

      there is a bearing in the center and the shaft should slide freely without removing the center plate or springs,
      keep the drum approximately 1/8" away from the bearing on both sides, ( make sure the door is level ) tighten left side drum first, with cable snug clamp shaft with vise grip against the header or upright support , then right drum,
      pro tip paint a line on the springs ( for spring turn count ) 7' high door 7.5 turn + or - if 4 " drum ) 8.5 turns on 8' high door
      pro tip - lube springs
      pro tip- stretch springs before tightening set screws

    i wonder why he (you) didn't just replace the bearings ... why's you replace the entire thingy?

    • @diygaragedoorparts
      @diygaragedoorparts  6 років тому +2

      it is way easier to replace the plate rather than punching out a hydraulically pressed in bearing and try to beat another one in.

    • @ScottDLR
      @ScottDLR 4 роки тому +1

      I'm sure it's easier to replace the entire assembly but I'm wondering about replacing just the bearings using a high quality sealed bearing....

    Maybe a liability showing the public how to do an inherently dangerous thing.
    Just saying.

      Legally, there is no liability showing someone how to do something. The law just doesn't work that way,.
