- On 5th September 2021, the incredible choir Index Cantorum (directed by Mark Williams) sang the services in Winchester Cathedral and I was very fortunate to have accompanied them on this day.
Here is the anthem from Choral Evensong on that day - 'A Hymn for St Cecilia' by Herbert Howells (1892-1983).
Such a treat to be able to play this awesome music with this wonderful choir in such an incredible space!

Aah! I love it when you pulled out Big Bertha at 02:44! And also how long that note reverberates after you push the stop back in!
I love this Hymn so much (after hearing it for the first time when I discovered this exact video). I searched UA-cam for other renditions and while I've found quite a few, none of them come even close to being as incredibly moving as Richard's version. The organ is simply stellar... Richard's playing and registrations complement the choir and the cathedral so well, it sends shivers down my spine every time I listen to it. 🥲
Cecilia herself must weep with joy at that glorious sound.
An real "tears in the eyes" treat. reminding us of so much that was lost and is now being found again. Thank you.
So beautiful Richard & Caroline! It thrills my heart to see the choir singing again.
I just love this!!
Magnificent!
I’d love to sing in a choir of this standard again, but I’m so out of practice at the moment! I’ve really fond memories of all the wonderful cathedrals I’ve had the privilege to sing such glorious music in. Thanks for sharing this with us all.
Beautiful singing by the Choir, I'm thrilled to hear your singing over & again.. Heavenly!
I’ve not listened to much of Howell’s choral works before but this is stunning…….. that pedal Reed 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
A Wonderful Sound Echoes in a beautiful building!💗 A Delight when Heard! Bless all that hear it..🙏 Thank you for the sound.👏👏👏💕
What a tune. Sublime. And fabulous performance. Bravo all.
I agree with Gerda. I, too, could listen for hours to such beautiful cathedral music. Your playing goes without saying--absolutely fantastic. Your registration for accompanying these singers was "spot on"-manuals and pedal registrations. Thank you for posting this.
Absolutely superb, organ and choir
Glorious. I love the music of Howells and that organ must have been a joy to play.
Absolutely wonderful Richard and Caroline!!! Yes, i can see Caroline! I can hear her too!!
What an absolute joy to hear and see. From locked down NZ.
Such a magnificent piece of music!! Thank you. Loved every second of this!!! And that tastefully applied pedal 32 at just the right moment 🥰 Just super!!!
Fantastic !! 👍👍
Glorious!
Incredibly wonderful in every way. Thank you very much indeed, Richard.
You just "made my day", with this beauty in sight and sound.
Is that Caroline singing in front on the second right side, or do my eyes deceive me?
Lovely organ
Can anyone see and hear Caroline? ❤️
Caroline is on the front row to the right-she is really enjoying singing with the choir!
Sure can!
I remember singing this in my second year at choir ripon cathedral ! Unfortunately I am in my last year but I can still remember it being amazing! Well done Richard and Caroline you performed it extremely well!!!!!
A family venture!!!!! 😊
Goosebump material!!! Those thumbs down are from commoners with no taste! ;)
St Cecilia is the saint for music. My sister is a Dominican Sister of St. Cecilia in Nashville
We didn’t see it in the video, but in the huge screen behind the high altar at Winchester one of the many stone sculptures is a small statue of St Cecilia.
Absolutely magnificent inspirational and a real treat to have shared this for all to enjoy. Is that Caroline front right leading the sops? Just going back to listen again. Thank you so much.
Well, if Caroline was singing in the choir, who was doing the filming of the Organist?
My camera and tripod... :)
