It's remarkable that you grew up in that chaos, but you're not like him. That's really something. I'm 40 and had a part time father who never lived at home, he died 6 months before my 8 year old son was born. I read your book, I was even at the original conference. Thankyou.
For me, inventing how to be a good dad is tough without receiving a first hand foundation to build on (I have noticed though for example I'm often the only father who participates in play, like when we're front flipping in the xtreme trampoline park). But I say, perhaps for our fathers and ourselves, the difference in life outcome is that we don't gravitate towards help from strangers because it's nothing compared to a natural forum of in-person regular conscious conversations over many years, but unless they are conscious, present and self aware people, they might as well be strangers.
That true community is rare and it's absence is the problem, it's our problem, my problem. It's been and is being systematically designed out of our way of life.
So what are we going to do about that?
