When I first heard Muse I didnt really like them, but my now wife dragged me to a Muse concert as she was a big fan. Holy hell this band is so goddamn good live. Definetely one of the top live bands out there and slowly they started to grow on me, for me personally thats important. Whenever i come across a new band I always check their live stuff and Muse definetely raised the bad. True professionals

Nice reaction! I’m a metalhead but overall just a huge fan of music. I’ve been listening to muse since 2003 when absolution was released. They are on my top 5 of all time. Just seen them in Philly last month. The rumors about being one of the best live shows were without a doubt true.

Muse fan here, saw them live this summer. The song really slaps, and was an experience to watch live. I have seen too many live versions of this song, and he is quite consistent in that growl. Not a big Metal head, but throughout their career theyve made it a mission to make a song of every genre, so huge praise that it comes across this well.

Muse are big metal fans. Live, they often throw in tributes to Deftones and Slipknot as segues, between songs. Matt said in an interview how they wanted to pay tribute to some of the Nu Metal bands of the 90's such as Korn and Limp Bizkit. Their eclectic style keeps me gravitating back to them over the years..

if you loved this, then I HIGHLY recommend, almost demand that you check out another song from their new album, Won't Stand Down. That song is worth reacting to just because of how much it belittles the tiny little heavy section of this song. Not to spoil anything, but there are some background fry-like screams, while musically it is incredible (-y heavy, for Muse, at least.)

Longtime Muse fan, but have also spent my fair share of time in the heavy and -core spaces in the early-mid 2000s, so it was really interesting to hear your perspective!
The guys have always been all about experimentation and paying respect to influences (including old school metal groups), but while the heavy vocals are new, a lot of longtime fans agree that this song feels like a return to older Muse in a lot of ways :)
They also have brought on Dan Lancaster (producer/mixer for Bring Me the Horizon & A Day to Remember) as their touring 4th man, who also mixed another song on this album ("Won't Stand Down"). So, maybe they'll continue to experiment in this space. Thanks again for your insights and breakdowns (no pun intended)!

I have been a Muse fan since their first album. To be honest, their first couple of albums (at least in my opinion) were alternative/prog Metal e.g. Absolution and Origin of Symmetry. Personally their music has alot of Neoclassical/Grungy/Prog ect... I mean they did change their sound a bit throughout the years and it was not always to my liking but you can never deny the genius of the composition, arrangement and work put in their music

I've seen a lot of people surprised by Muse being heavy, and while this is the heaviest song of their's that I've heard, it definitely is not their only heavy track. My favorite example of Muse's heavier side is "Liquid State". Banger of a song off of a banger of an album, that is littered with heavier moments.

Couple interesting things: If you are looking for more low end in the mix, they've played this live at a bunch of festivals and its much more present in the live mix. Matt has said in an interview that he's had a doctor look at his vocal cords and said that they are smaller than average for a man, which maybe helps his upper vocal range? Also there's a really old clip from a festival of Muse's drummer Dom getting ahold of Corey Taylor's mask and messing around with it, and I think they said Slipknot was an influence on this album, or maybe just this song - I can't remember exactly. And, as many people have said, they do have some heavier songs like Stockholm Syndrome (the ERRA cover is awesome) and Assassin, plus some deeper cuts like Dead Star, Citizen Erased, and listen to Micro Cuts for some insane vocal range (bonus points for live version). Sorry for the essay :)

Amazing reaction my friend!!....I am a metal lover and I think you are the right person to give us your opinion about this incredible singer and performer, because you are an expert singer and vocalist....In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just It was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coach, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 and 5 years have passed since then, but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those reactors who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you...You have to be prepared because you ar going to receive an avalanche of views, comments and new subscribers....I leave you one more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....ua-cam.com/video/bDX3FhmyNac/v-deo.html

OG, Muse was very metal/hard rock. They abandoned that about 10 years ago especially. But the old fans will never forget and never stop missing what they used to be. This is the closest we've got to Origin Of Symmetry style again. I had hopes for a more metal album in the end, since they claimed to be inspired by Slipknot when making it, but having any heavy Muse to listen to again is absolutely amazing.

The thing you are talking about at 22:00 is called open string bounce and Muse is very known for using this technique a lot since forever. Hysteria (2003), Stockholm Syndrome (2003), Futurism (2001), Hyper Music (2001), The Globalist (2015) and the list goes on.

Muse has a lot of heavy elements in their music, especially in their live versions of songs. Search for "Muse Metal Medley" on UA-cam. A few years ago at their concerts they started stitching together parts of their heaviest songs into one 12-15 minute song. There are different versions. All are glorious.

As a MUSER I am so happy you enjoyed this song 😂 Mathew, Chris, and Dom do have a ton of attention, but not in the younger group. I myself and still quite young and think that kids my age are missing out on a LOT-! Like, Taylor Swift?? No, Matt Bellamy please.

Hey mark! I was wondering if you could do a video on the band she must burn. I really love all their music and would LOVE for you to do them, specifically react to their older music (grimoire, or the EP) not the new stuff 🤢. Thanks, loving the consistent content, I’ve learned tons and have massively grown as a vocalist thanks to you!

For years Muse was a band I would forget existed, then every couple of months be reminded they existed, give them a listen, and regret the time I spent not listening to them.
I’ll have to sit with the new sound for a bit to really know how I feel about it. I mostly like their more electronic meets hard arena rock sound, but I’m always open to a band changing things up, especially after they’ve given multiple albums in a particular sound.

So none of them have a metal background. Basically, Matt was listening to a lot of Slipknot with his son and started wondering if he could learn how to sing/play like that, as did Dom (drummer) and Chris (bassist). So they took it upon themselves to study metal and teach themselves how to integrate it into their music.

Really enjoyed this reaction. You did a great job of explaining those singing techniques in a way that I, a non-singer, was able to understand. Count me as a new subscriber. As for Muse, their new album is pretty good. There's a few songs with a definite "metal" flavor, and it's pretty obvious that Bellamy was very angry while writing some of the songs on the album (one of the songs is actually named "We are Fucking Fucked").

    - crossing arms: check
    - hand gesture: check
    "butter"
    makes me smile :)
Edit: Imagine davin townsend and muse doing a fry scream duet / harmony. And clean / fry scream harmonys of each one.
    Devin: my favorite.
Oh and don't forget muse's micro cuts.
    Spoiler alert. No harch vocals.

Muse is ALWAYS welcome on this (or any channel). No matter their music direction, they are absolutely incredible, not to mention one of the best live bands of the current day.
