Saw Motorhead for the first time on the Overkill tour, front row of stalls at the legendary Glasgow Apollo, when I was 16. Lemmy: "This is our Pink Floyd rip-off number" Me: "METROPOLIS!" Fast Eddie looks at me and points, like, "you got it!" Those were the days my friend. I also shook Ian Gillan's hand from the front row of Gillan's Mr Universe gig at University of Strathclyde later that year, so there!
BTW Lemmy was in Hawkwind before Motorhead,Silver Machine worth a listen featuring Lemmy.Hawkind very trippy but, great live and if you off with the fairies.
Am I the only one who would recommend This Godless Endeavor by Nevermore? That album is such an incredible masterpiece but I never see anyone bring it up.
Both "Capricorn" and "Metropolis" are Lem and the boys experimenting with more air and space in the mix. The results give us a call back to the more groovy, trippy Hawkwind days. "Limb From Limb" is noteworthy because Lem plays the second guitar solo on the song. Producer Jimmy Miller helmed several Rolling Stones classic albums.
This is the Motörhead (or any) album with the greatest seismic impact. Nothing like it had been heard before. in particular the song overkill was something completely new. I also like that the album is so varied. Back then the best we could do for a playlist was to put one side of an album on repeat (or record a mix tape). Nothing will ever top overkill... and after 10000 repeats capricorn is an acquired taste :-) - Getting hold of this album as a young teenager when it was new and unique means I can hardly pretend to be unbiased thou.
saw original lineup at Hammersmith in London, loudest band ever.At the end instead of encore Lemmy came back out and told everyone to f#ckoff. My mate was so stoned slept through whole show,my ears still ringing.
They're almost like a heavier version of ZZ Top, the punk and space rock really shines through in early Motorhead also. The debut's good too I think you'll like every album after this one. Bomber, Iron Fist, Another Perfect Day, Orgasmatron, Rock 'n' Roll - and of course, their classic live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith, everything's even better there than the studio versions...
I would highly recommend their live album "No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith". Nearly every track on that album I prefer to their studio counterparts including every track they play from Overkill. I consider it one of the best live albums out there.
god damn this album is such a banger... the raw old school yet kind of colourful production adds a lot to me. also no skips in this album, they are all money
I also love Motorhead, especially this era. But my favourite Lemmy related track is 'Orgone Accumulator' by Hawkwind from the classic Space Ritual album. Bob Calvert's vocals and the mix of heavy effected guitar, sax, synth and audio generators is awesome - but Lemmy basically plays a 10 minute bass solo driving the whole thing along .
You should definitely check out the MC5. Along with The Stooges, they're considered one of the earliest forerunners of Punk Rock. They were a huge influence on Motörhead, The Damned and most of the early punk scene. Fun Fact: Lemmy actually briefly played bass in The Damned. There's also videos of Lemmy and Dave Vanian jamming with surviving members of the MC5.
Good choice this is my favorite Motörhead album. Yes it is much slower, but I like that. It has much more of a classic rock vibe. By the way, I love Capricorn. There’s a reason Motörhead included it in their set list for decades and decades. I’ve probably seen Motörhead 12 times .
I really love Capricorn. To me the production of that song i not bad at all but rather enhancing the spacy atmosphere of the song. The only Motörhead album that really is badly produced (in my opinion) is their debut ("Motörhead", from 1977) which is overall too quiet.
The Dead Kennedys are a punk rock institution here in the Bay Area. Them, The Avengers, Crime, & The Nuns were all part of that first wave of Bay Area Punk. Flipper was part of that scene as well. Later the scene would spill over into the East Bay and in my hometown of San Jose. Singer Jello Biafra has had his own record label Alternative Tentacles since 1979, & has released bands like The Darts, Jucifer, NOMEANSNO, & Tsunami Bomb. Definitely worth checking it out!
I really like your channel! You listened to my 2 of 3 favourite Motorhead album (Overkill and Overnight Sensation). The third album is Inferno, maybe the best of 3. I highly recommenend it! You'll feel the true essence and power of Motörhead!
Motorhead being fast; Burner, Devils, Death Or Glory, Locomotive, On your feet or on your knees, I'm so bad, Rock N' Roll, Blackheart, Make my day, Sacrifice, R.A.M.O.N.E.S., Shine, Mean Machine, Riding With The Driver.... there are more but that's a good selection
RIP Lemmy, Philthy Animal and Fast Eddie, the best Motörhead line up in my opinion. I first heard Overkill back in the day and I've been a huge fan since then, I hope their amps are turned up to 11 and they're playing together in that great gig in the sky.
Mine too but come to think of it, maybe Kira will like Bomber a bit less actually because it is somewhat slower overall like the mid-tempo songs here it's more bluesy courtesy of Eddie (who even lead sings a song) so it may be less up her alley if she's more into the faster stuff. In a sense, Motorhead didn't truly become super fast until the Campbell/Dee era in the '90s where it's more metal than more traditional rock'n'roll grooves.
Just got Motörhead’s Another Perfect Day 40th anniversary edition, it’s got a brand new show included, plus some demos. Great editions coming out these past few years!
I think a lot of folks have a certain perception of Motörhead as just being fast and loud, which indeed they were, but it often leads people tob either forget or overlook just how experimental Motörhead were, Overkill is perhaps my favourite album because it covers all the bases
Motorhead's "Overkill" is as essential a record as 'Ace of Spades' because it really captured the foundation of the band and their music... They played a number of songs off this album live in concert for their entire career. Initially, Lemmy Kilmister (vocals & bass) formed Motorhead in 1975 w/ Larry Wallis (guitar) and Lucas Fox (drums)... Lemmy's former band Hawkwind had a label that funded a Motorhead album, but it was rejected in 1976 because they complained it had no bass (Lemmy played bass w/ distortion like a rhythm guitar) Lucas Fox was soon fired and replaced by Phil 'Philthy Animal' Taylor (drums)... They added 'Fast' Eddie Clarke (guitar) as Larry Wallis soon left Motorhead... The band played gigs but were broke by 1978 and ready to fold when Chiswick Records in the UK offered to record Motorhead's debut album in 1978 - It was the same record done in '76 w/ Wallis & Fox but sounded much better w/ Philthy & Eddie. Despite the low expectations for the '78 debut album 'Motorhead', the band shocked critics when their cover of 'Louie Louie' became a hit single in the UK... UK label Bronze Records offered Motorhead a multi-record contract soon after. Musically, Lemmy felt that Motorhead was closer to the Ramones than Judas Priest... drummer Philthy also wanted to play the double bass drums and practiced until the intro to 'Overkill' came together... However, the band was volatile and 'Fast' Eddie Clarke would often clash w/ Philthy and Lemmy in the studio and on the road. But the line-up had serious creative chemistry and the songs for 'Overkill' came together quickly... They hired former Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller for the record but according to the band, Miller was a drug-addicted mess by that point (Miller quit the music business soon after) ... Still, a number of classic Motorhead songs came together on the record - 'Overkill' ... 'Stay clean' ... 'Metropolis' ... 'Damage case'... (Metallica's James Hetfield was a huge fan of the record when it became available in the US in the early 80's... American record labels were unwilling to release Motorhead records in the US initially... Dave Mustaine of Megadeth was also a huge fan) 'Overkill' charted in the UK at #24... but an injury forced Motorhead off the road in 1979. So, the band went back into the studio to finish another record and that became the 'Bomber' album that was released the same year... It charted even higher in the UK (#12) as Motorhead returned to the road... Strangely, United Artists who had rejected releasing the first Motorhead album in 1976 opted to release the record in 1979 as 'On parole'... to shamelessly capitalize on Motorhead's growing popularity. 'Ace of Spades' came in 1980 and Motorhead had a top 10 hit in the UK against all odds... Their grueling touring was captured on their first live album in 1981 'No sleep til Hammersmith'... It went all the way to #1 on the UK charts and is considered an essential record in the hard rock/ heavy metal genre. Motorhead were burnt out by 1982 but obligated to deliver a new album... 'Fast' Eddie Clarke produced the album 'Iron Fist' that year but his dissatisfaction in Motorhead was becoming a negative factor and he was out of the band in the middle of that tour... Lemmy felt that 'Iron Fist' was not a particularly satisfying album. Motorhead recruited ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian 'Robbo' Robertson in 1983 and recorded the album 'Another perfect day'... but Motorhead fans hated the new guitarist and the album sold poorly... Robertson was out of the band by 1984 and drummer Philthy soon followed him out. In 1985, Motorhead announced that 2 new guitarists had joined the band - Mick 'Wurzel' Burston and Philip 'Zoom' Campbell w/ drummer Pete Gill... They announced the album 'No remorse' w/ a 10th anniversary tour that had a live gig filmed and released years later as "The Birthday Party'.
Thank you for the excellent reaction, thank you Motorhead for your brilliance. You say "Overkill" song was top ten, then top five...... and for me its number one. A bombastic start to a brilliant album, that provides us with the rock 'n' roll we continue to love.
In metropolis, the bits where hes singing "i dont care" is pretty much the main riff for their later song 'Loser' which is an absolute banger btw you should definitely check it out
I'm a fan of your full-album reactions Kira - have you ever listened to any Psychobilly or Rockabilly Revival? Check out the album Tiger Army by Tiger Army. I think it would tickle your fancy. It's the band's first album, one of many excellent listens.
You should check out some 90/2000s metal! I'd recommend these ones - "Hybrid Theory" - Linkin Park - "Cowboys From Hell" - Pantera - "Korn" - Korn - "The Sickness" - Disturbed these are just some of the biggest ones i can think of that defined metal genres at the time
I haven't listened to this album since it came out, they were such a change of pace from the other metal bands at the time, Saxon would be the nearest comparison. My favourite track of theirs is 'iron horse born to lose' there's a live version that slows it down, its awesome.
Overkill is a great album. But Another Perfect Day is my favorite Motorhead album. Robbo killed it. Btw, this version of Capricorn is bad admittedly. But the version of Capricorn on their No Sleep Till Hammersmith live album is brilliant comparatively.
I saw Motörhead at their tenth anniversary concert at the Hammy Odeon. There's no real way to describe the noise. I couldn't hear properly until late the next day. People were phoning in from all over London to complain about the noise. Hey, if it makes the BBC news, must be something, right? 🙂
@@LarryFleetwood8675 My favourite is ROCK N ROLL but it's the first Motorhead album I heard/owned/listened to death, and they're the ones that tend to stick with you:)
This is kind of where Heavy Metal started...fast pased, agressive, guitar solos and no remorse! The say Black Sabbath started it all, and yes they got it all heavy but Motörhead got it fast and aggressive. Venom is another band you should check out, clearly inspired by Motörhead (and Kiss). The beginning of Black Metal.
Hard Rock in 1978 was never much harder than this, so yes it’s quieter and quite far from the rabid ‘louder than everything else’ beast they became later. But it’s a great album when you get used to the slower tempos and the 70’s production. Songs are generally really good, so it works despite those setbacks. And If you want it faster, just put on ‘No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith’ from 1981, one of the best live Rawk albums there is ;)
I love how you enjoy listening to Motörhead 🔥 I was enjoying it aswell and getting excited with the same songs that you were vibing to 😂🤘 please listen to Katatonia or Soen you'll love them
SO, I really hope this album grows on you, Kira, because it's widely regarded as Motorhead's best. But the way to approach it is to think of it more as a giant, slow lumbering beast - bluesy and, dare I say it, sexy ❤. The tempo is often slow but the energy, if you can feel it, is intense. Almost tantric 😂. Once you stop looking for what you want, you'll get what you need... I'm just throwing in some life advice there, but it also applies to this album 😂. And Capricorn is meant to be spacey 🙂. But even if it never clicks for you, there's plenty of awesome fast Motorhead out there for you too! 😃
I heard an interview with Lemmy that he wrote Capricorn in like 15 minutes or something lol so there is your answer. Pretty sure the record company wanted one more track.
What got me into metal was Ace Of Spades. Also bought their next album Iron Fist from 1982. Was disappointed. Never did anything for me. Later bought No Sleep Till Hammersmith live and the compilation No Remorse. Came in a leather sleeve. A little smelly 🤣
Oh yeah! But have you heard 1916 yet? Completely A-typical to their sound. yet arguably Lemmy's best vocal performance. Maybe the only exception to "Motorhead should jus stay fast". I also prefer the rawness of the first couple albums. I never got to see the OG lineup live, but I did see Eddie with Fastway just after he left Motorhead. 🤘🧙♂🤘
Part of the problem lay with the producer not really being used to a band like Motorhead - and let's not forget, they were a rock 'n' roll band first and foremost. Just with plenty of oomph!!
I saw a few of your videos.. Im into it.. I recommend Nine Inch Nails. if you never got into them anyway.. Start with the first album and just work your way thru.. I believe you will enjoy
Yea, Capricorn was poorly produced on this album. It really was a great song when one saw Motörhead live though. There’s a quite good version on the “No Sleep 'til Hammersmith” album. Thx for sharing your Motörhead journey!
You got the order of the releases wrong. Overkill is the second Motorhead album, Bomber (that you already did) is the third and next is Ace of Spades. Anyway, I enjoyed your reaction one more time and I'm really glad that you listen to the whole albums instead of only the famous songs
Hmm, this album is pretty much perfect from start to finish, I really don't understand how you can dis Stay Clean and Capricorn, or I Won't Pay Your price - but each to their own I guess!
KIRAA A A how are you, any news??😄 Motorhead is not one of my favorite bands, although my favorite album of theirs is Iron Fist. I also greatly appreciate their legacy for the influence they had on many punk bands that came after them. I hope to see more reactions to punk/post-hardcore or extreme metal, perhaps death metal? ^^
i find it interesting how you had to take some time to temper your expectations with the tracks' speed (or tempo or whatever), idk why but people tend to say this band is repetitive and plays the same style over and over, when i find them to cover quite the spectrum of speed and styles traditionally in rock and (early) metal throught their discography. not saying that you said this tho, in fact you evalued the songs pretty open minded-ly
The production is bad because Motorhead were still struggling and only signed on to a smaller record label. They didn't have the money to afford the studio time or personnel. The conditions were better for Ace of Spades. Plus they have said the speed they used during those recording sessions was top notch. After Ace they had the time and money for their next album - Iron Fist. Which has a lot of great songs too. Unfortunately they let Fast Eddie engineer the thing, and it sounds terrible.
GET BETTER HEADPHONES! M50'S ARE DOGSHI FOR MUSIC LISTENING THEY'RE MADE FOR STUDIO RECORDINGS NOT FOR MUSIC ENJOYMENT! please n thank u~ get a 2nd hand SENNHEISER HD600 or AKG K712 PRO (hd600 is better imho but k712 has bigger sound if ur INTO THAT)
Man, that original trio, the sound, the style, just f'n incredible. I'm glad every tune does NOT sound like Ace of Spades. They play rock and roll!

Suggestion: Snuff Said, by Snuff of course. 😊. One of the best pop-punk records ever
What got me into metal was Ace Of Spades. Also bought their next album Iron Fist from 1982. Was disappointed. Never did anything for me. Later bought No Sleep Till Hammersmith live and the compilation No Remorse. Came in a leather sleeve. A little smelly 🤣
Production on many Motörhead albums is somewhat questionable, but the music stands on its merits. Good to see you enjoying it!
They had a real swagger, the early riffs.
I don't have money to give, but if you could listen to any band, please check out Katatonia - The great cold distance. You'll fkn love them. ❤️
I heard Lemmy say that no matter how bad a show went it was perfectly allright as long as they played Overkill in the end.
its a good album, my fave is 'iron fist' its the first i bought, asi didn thave any money when i was 14 and previous albums came out lol
my favoritt Motorhead album
Where are you located? My band is looking for a bassist in New York City we have upbeat and dark songs similar to the Clash’s first album
I saw a few of your videos.. Im into it.. I recommend Nine Inch Nails. if you never got into them anyway.. Start with the first album and just work your way thru.. I believe you will enjoy
The best Motörhead album.
If you're looking for something fast, I recommend 'Indiputed Attitude' by Slayer. 😁
Me encanta...esta relocaaa 😂🤘🤘
Yea, Capricorn was poorly produced on this album. It really was a great song when one saw Motörhead live though. There’s a quite good version on the “No Sleep 'til Hammersmith” album. Thx for sharing your Motörhead journey!
Saw Nomeansnos best album "Wrong" is up on Spotify (again?) Please Kira, react to that, I really think you would enjoy it.
Don't sweat it, we'll get it back to you...
Stay Clean has the best bass solo
Hello, please react to Colour The Small One - album by SIA! Such a beautiful album with raw instrumentals - from before Sia becoming a popstar
You got the order of the releases wrong. Overkill is the second Motorhead album, Bomber (that you already did) is the third and next is Ace of Spades.
Anyway, I enjoyed your reaction one more time and I'm really glad that you listen to the whole albums instead of only the famous songs
🚀 H A W K 🦅 W I N D 🛸
🌌Doremi Fasol Latido🪬
Please
Now that I'm listening to the album for the first time too and I think about it, Overkill should be faster than the rest, for it to make sense.
Hmm, this album is pretty much perfect from start to finish, I really don't understand how you can dis Stay Clean and Capricorn, or I Won't Pay Your price - but each to their own I guess!
I see you have the book House of Leaves. Did you ever read it all the way through?
top 3 album by Motorhead, fer shure
We need ace of spades nowwwwww
I think perhaps you haven't listened to enough Motorhead and have wrong ideas about what they're "supposed" to sound like.
KIRAA A A how are you, any news??😄
Motorhead is not one of my favorite bands, although my favorite album of theirs is Iron Fist. I also greatly appreciate their legacy for the influence they had on many punk bands that came after them. I hope to see more reactions to punk/post-hardcore or extreme metal, perhaps death metal? ^^
Does anybody know what kinda plant she has hanging down the wall?
yesssssssssss
i find it interesting how you had to take some time to temper your expectations with the tracks' speed (or tempo or whatever), idk why but people tend to say this band is repetitive and plays the same style over and over, when i find them to cover quite the spectrum of speed and styles traditionally in rock and (early) metal throught their discography. not saying that you said this tho, in fact you evalued the songs pretty open minded-ly
Hear n' Aid stars when?
👍
Hi there react to stoned century psycho land you will like the first track
Capricorn was slapped together at the last minute because the record company demanded 1 more song, that's why it feels so unpolished
Please do kiss of death or sacrifice if you do another motorhead video
Hi there react to king weed bad habit there you go and the full album
Please do something on kirawasadiver,please.
Unfortunately they let Fast Eddie engineer the thing, and it sounds terrible.
should listen to a gorilla biscuits song easy to listen hardcore
respect from Ireland for liking hc btw haha
The production on this one has always a bit iffy. Also prefer Motorhead with more umph. Sacrifice albulm for example.
Check out rmblr
I think this is my least favorite album of the classic line-up. My biggest favorite is Iron Fist. I recommend that to you.
Cutie!!!
