I think the only reason Matt didn't break down over Gina leaving was because he learned during the vote that she betrayed him. Earl just happened to be the 2nd person voted out, and hadn't done anything wrong, so Matt was sad. I think he would have cried if anyone other than Ashleigh was voted out, because he doesn't want people to go without a reason and in his mind he now has a reason to vote her out. I think Matt sees Ash's interest in the host as toxic and genuinely is worried (in an admittedly patronizing way fueled partly by jealousy and partly by internalized patriarchal infantilization of women) that she will be taken advantage of by the host, and he is trying to be a white knight in some ways, beyond just the rejection from her telling him he's like a brother. He will probably try to vote out Molly after Ash because of the host's obsession over her, would be my guess, other than trying to get Hutch out whenever he doesn't win immunity. He's sweet and well-meaning, and in 2003 he is ahead of the curve on every issue. The internet was still dial up at the time. People were not watching youtube videos breaking down these things, so a guy like him had no way to learn theory and it certainly wasn't in the cultural consciousness to pick up through osmosis in the ways taken for granted now.

yeah Hasan mentioned it when chat was calling Matt a dummy like last episode. Why would he ever think that what is happening is happening? If you don't expect something it's easy to interpret signs in very different ways. Case in point, when Matt noticed that Gina was acting, he interpreted it as her trying to play him, not as everyone around him being actors. It's natural to come up with the most likely explanation, everything around you being stage is literally so far-fetched, no one would ever think of that unless things get so weird that no other explanation makes sense anymore.

I feel like you would have to have some sort of severe mental illness level paranoia to think “this reality show clearly is designed completely around me everyone is an actor”. Most people may catch a lie or inconsistent story and think “wow that dudes sketchy”
