Hasan missed the Asian nuanced racism take. Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hmong, etc., all view each other as completely different cultures. My Asian family was racist towards most other Asian nations because they were colonized by them, killed by them, etc. We didn't have 1 Asian stereotype for Asians, we have like 20. And it doesn't simply demean them, it dehumanizes them completely. So it may seem like intra-racial hate on the surface, but the depth of the hate is much more detailed and specific and has a history of violence and subjugation. Pakistan and India is a good example.
Kinda disagree about the Indo-pak example. For example, the japanese can get real racist against koreans and vice versa which is based more on racial stereotypes. For Indians and pakistanis tho, we (not me lol) mostly tend to insult each other based on religion and xenophobia. We're essentially the same race so getting racist is hard. So, Islamophobia / anti hindu sentiments AND politics and economic influence are more relevant in our smack talk.
@@based4indian2commie0slut69 yeah you're right about Japan and Korea being a better example.
he is indeed ignorant on asians
@Mom Spelled Backwards Is Wow There's a lot of racism and colourism in South Asia, which is ironic. Many people are also influenced by racist rhetoric from the US or English speaking countries, which is also ironic.
I hate the japanese
"black ppl can't be racist" did everybody just collectively forget about kanye and his meltdown from a few months ago or are his statements about black & jewish ppl not considered racism anymore nowadays?
It's just the black version of white dudes who say they're the most oppressed. Some people haven't learned to think about anyone else's perspective. They only care about oppression that affects them and don't think about anyone else's experiences.
Being a money grabbing Jew isn’t a race

If you're racist you'd probably wanna be the #1 racist since you already have the mentality of thinking you're better then a specific group of people
This is about race so they judged it like a race. If you're not first, you're last.
@@nickv1212 Ricky, I was high when I said that.
chat calling the boomer dude racist for simply saying "oriental" is fucking hilarious considering how many east asian people in his age range (incl some in my family) still say that shit. like relax dawg it is not that deep
its just a matter of new language. like my granddad used to say "transsexual" all the time because he just didnt know of the term transgender. that doesnt make him transphobic it just means he didnt learn 1 word
@@goldenmolelover It just means your words don't mean shit.
i am asian and i think it’s funny how upset young asian or white people (getting mad for asian people) try to cancel people for saying oriental. Asian people name their own stores and restaurants oriental. Of course if your tone is racist and clearly using it in a demeaning way then yes, it is racist.
Yeah, old people sometimes just don’t update their terminology. Doesn’t necessarily make them racist. My grandma still uses “blacks” and “oriental” and has some odd moments here and there, but I would still say she’s like a 2 on the racism scale because she doesn’t have biases against anyone because of race. Same with people struggling a bit with trans people’s pronouns or fully grasping what it means to be trans, but still trying their best. I wouldn’t say they’re transphobic because they don’t actually have a problem or bias against trans people, they just slip up sometimes
Another interesting thing I noticed about older people when I was with my Grandmother for a few days recently was that for some reason she has a habit of describing people when talking about them where I just wouldn't say anything.
you are not supposed to say black anymore now? asking because I'm not from US. not all black people in the world are African-American, in fact that's a tiny minority
@@Johnny_Savage Not black, “blacks”. As in, instead of saying “black people”, she’ll say “the blacks”.
When i first came to the US from india, one of my white friend's friend joked about my family working as scammers and it felt particularly bad cos not only was he an adult but also black. Power is obviously an important factor to determine impact but anyone regardless of ot their own race can perpetuate racism.
Black people aren't good because their skin. Black ppl can be white supremacists. Black ppl can advocate for fascism. It is racist to see them as a monolith
Yeah, that's true. Racist jokes are bad, and it's very common, unfortunately. Many Indians and other Asians are also very racist towards black people and other Asians. I'm south Asian and I've heard even relatives and classmates saying the most racist shti imaginable.
Ive seen a great deal of racism from East Asians towards black people and Hispanic people. And that’s just in the US, it’s 1000x worse in Asia.
@@deevasquez1171 And I've seen the same from black people and Hispanic people (who can also be white). And yes, it's worse in latin america. That doesn't really change anything. The racism from both sides exist. It being 1000x worse tho is a huge assumption. I'll agree it's bad but at the end of the day, east asians didn't enslave & segregate black africans and built their entire countries on it. There's a book by a black author where he says that while there is definitely a lot of racism in china, he'd still choose to live there instead of the US.
Honestly I like race jokes no matter the race
Growing up Jamaican I feel like I had to teach myself not to be racist to other Caribbeans. Family really had us thinking we were better😅. Nowadays I’m aggy at the concept of whiteness but not white ppl themselves if that makes any sense

32 and a half minutes into this video, and Hasan is just under 4 minutes into a 10 minute video lol
Racism is very prevalent in parts of the world you wouldn't expect. We see a lot of racism and colorism in South Asia, for example, despite most South Asians being dark. The difference is, these people don't have power on world affairs, and it's easy to change their minds. Mostly harmless when compared to white ones. But still very bad and should be avoided. There's also a culture about people making racist "jokes", often against themselves, maybe to fit in with other racists.
i remember visiting turkey as a blond norwegian early teen, whenever we walked the streets, random turks would come up and touch my hair and asked for pictures, thought it was weird at the time, but understand now they had never seen anything like it so it was exotic for them.
Turkey is literally one of the European countries with the highest amount of tourists, unless you were in some tiny villages in the middle of nowhere it's extremely unlikely they never saw that

as a white person i truly don't think i can even rate myself with any accuracy at all. i'd like to say 1 or 2 because of unconcious biases but if i'm not a real activist can that even be valid? idk
unconscious bias doesn't make one racist. You also seem to recognise these biases as well. If you or others in the video were asked upfront whether you are racist or not most would have never waid yes but the scale system is a very clever way getting people to admit to being a "little racist" for merely being having a potential blindspot. The spectrum itself is arbitrary and ultimately meaningless.
Compare and rate yourself to your surrounding. I'm black and have people in my family more racist than most. Also racism happens in every culture if you were Irish the hot button topic would be Catholic vs not also a lot of racism to British people when they hear the accent. There's levels to racism as long as you're conscious of potential short comings you're doing better than most
As a white person I'd like to be 10 but I've still got a long way to go.
I do not play these marxist white guilt games.
i dont think any white person could be 1. even poc people are gonna have internalised racism.
Hasan not knowing that Turkey paticipated in slavery is incredible considering how much he talks about slavery and its consequences on African-Americans. The Ottoman Empire didn't officially abolish slavery until 1909.
Even then slavery continued into even the 1930s, but of course, only the trans-Atlatic slave trade matters because that was mostly done by white people against black people.
I think he’s said chattel slavery no? That is very different and the slavery in the Ottoman Empire and the Middle East generally lacked the raical component that European and American slavery had
@@enider I don't understand what you mean, they definitely practiced chattel slavery. The Ottomens even castrated their male slaves and forced female slaves to work in brothels.

Gonna disagree here, "proximity to power" is a cop out answer meant to justify some pretty nasty racist attitudes. If you have a dislike towards a racial group and you're acting on it knowingly or otherwise then it's racism. No goal post shifting necessary.
For the record it's still racism even if not acted on, acting on it is just a symptom.
exactly, you don't need power to enforce and perpetuate racism ans stereotypes. Anyone can do that. By this logic, a white homeless dude with zero institutional power can say whatever he wants without being considered racist.
But... you can be racist without disliking anyone. It's not a justification, it's more the cause why people are racist, what "white" is and the difference between colorism and racism. Like sure you can hate white people due to generalizations about their skin but you won't really discriminate them systematically and hurt their privileges or something.
@@idontcare9041 Agree with the first line, it's why I said knowingly or otherwise since plenty is subconscious ideas about groups of people, positive or negative. And I agree it's right to say proximity to power is a cause for racism and acts as a justification
it’s just semantics. there are two types of racism: systemic aka structural racism, and social racism aka prejudice. systemic racism is rooted in power, and that is why black people cannot be systemically racist towards whites in the US, although they can contribute to systemic racism against other races and their own. however, you can be racist as in prejudiced against anyone as any race. it’s that simple. stop arguing whether you can be racist without power, when we all know that in one type of racism you can and in another you cannot.
9:00 Japan has a lot of black people, especially in Tokyo. A lot of them are from places like Nigeria and get a bad rap from the few of them being the ones who are working the streets in Kabukicho and Roppongi. There are plenty of first gen+ black/Japanese people out here and they are 100% Japanese culturally.
'A lot' is really an overstatement considering japan is 98% homogeneous. Japan has black people would be more appropriate.
It still isn’t a great place for anyone non Japanese to live, except white people, black people, Hispanics and even some Arabs face a wide range of discrimination when visiting.
Americans refusing to acknowledge internalized and interpersonal racism is something every race can have/do to every race, as usual. You don’t need power to be a racist you do need power for institutional and structural racism but not for internalized racism (prejudice) or interpersonal racism.
It's so annoying because it basically turns into a semantics argument about what racism is.
you can thank the long wave of damage done by the neo-marxists and post-structuralist like Marcuse and Foucault for that
I think that ever since racism was made, everyone is at least a 3 after the age of 5 due to implicit bias.
"All your viewers are 40 years and up" damn i thought i was 18 but i geuss i was wrong

20:21 Wait, is that a microaggression if someone is rly well spoken too? I've heard something similar before, but I didn't rly understand it. Is that only a thing in America, or am i just ignorant?
yeah because it's implying that my race speaks wrong by default, it's kinda like the "your pretty for a black girl" thing but less obvious
@@XiaoIsMyHusbandBTW Wouldn't that only be if they included their race in the statement tho? If I just say "You're pretty" it doesn't imply anything about your race.
So I guess what I'm asking is if I just say "You're eloquent", is it still a microaggression?
I mean, I don't think I've ever told anyone that, but I'm just curious

I'd like to be 10 but I'm probably 8 at most.
Everyone sees themselves as the hero of their story. Not too many can be honest and assess themselves subjectively
why is he so fucking based
I'm genuinely confused by the micro aggression thing regarding commenting on how well spoken someone is. I'm white and am regularly told that I'm very well spoken (as a compliment, I think) - entirely out of the blue, could be talking about elden ring and people will stop to say it. I don't understand how it would be racist to make the same comment about a black person?
I get that my lived experiences differ in that I've not been subjected to societal racism and so I don't understand the connotations of the things people of colour have to deal with, but that's why I'm asking - to understand and ensure I don't inadvertently mistreat people.
You go up to a white person and you talk to em, but obviously you don’t make a comment about how well spoken they are because they’re just speaking like you. But, If you for example have an idea of how black people talk and you end up talking to one and they “talk white”, as in don’t use AAVE, and you comment saying “you’re well spoken” it coaxes out that bias that you think that not only do you think black people speak out of the norm, but it’s such a surprise that black people are capable of speaking “well” that they need to be complimented on it.
not the same with black people. They're not expected or assumed to not be eloquent and well spoken by such white people. They will never say the same thing to a well spoken white person.
this mainly happens to me with other black people surprisingly but they usually phrase it as "talking white" and so it perpetuates and idea that the way i talk is an exclusively white thing and that im outside the norm. it also puts black people into a bubble of the way they are supposed to talk
@@XiaoIsMyHusbandBTW the whole "you're acting too white" thing is so harmful
