Kurtis Blow on Being 1st Rapper Signed to Major Label, 1st Rap Single to Go Gold

  • Kurtis Blow broke boundaries in the hip-hop world and set records along the way, which he spoke about extensively in a recent interview with VladTV. The legendary rapper spoke about what it was like being the first rapper signed to a major label, which he accomplished at the young age of 19 when he signed with Mercury. He explained that his college friend Russell Simmons had a part in helping him get the deal, where he released his first single, "Christmas Rap." The track was the fourth hip-hop album ever released, and it has lasted the test of time as it's still played every year during the holidays.
    During the conversation, Kurtis also spoke about having the first certified gold album in hip-hop with his track "The Breaks." When asked about Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" being the first gold album, Kurtis explained that while the album sold millions, it was never officially certified.
    Check out more of what Kurtis had to say, including going on the first national hip-hop tour.

      no not really. it kinda doesn't make sense (logically nor theologically) Adam wasn't the first man and nor did he contribute anything to civilization (or hip hop in this sense). nor was there anyone trying to be like Adam, better than Adam, or trying to get Adam to get them in good with god.
      hip hop is more than just rhyme. its about leaving a legacy and this man has left an amazing legacy (among many other artist of his time who have been forgotten and the elders have to actually rack their brains to remember.

    Kurtis Blow, you can never be weak Ha ha ha
    People should watch the 1985 movie "Krush Groove" and pay attention to The King of Rap, he really bust through the scene in the 1980s with America, Basketball, Xmas Rappin, If I Ruled the World, Save Your Love For #1 (Rene & Angela),Sun City, The breaks, The 1986 Martin Luther King charity song " King Holiday" yeah with Run DMC, Fat Boys, Whitney Houston, Full Force /LisaLisa, New Edition, James JT Taylor, Stephanie Mills, Menudo feat Ricky Martin, Whodini, Melle Mel

  • @topkatspride

    Peep the videos of these Kurtis Blow classic singles: Christmas Rappin', The Breaks, Basketball, 8 Million Stories, AJ Scratch, Party Time, If I Ruled the World, and Tough. These jams will also show anyone how diverse his skills are, and how lethal his talent is, even though Kurt never laid down bars about killin', sellin' drugs, takin' drugs, how much money he has, how many shorties he's smashing', and all that other nonsense... Even though he had it going on like Drake in a strip club, because he was the #1 soloist artist for many years back-n-the-day. BTW, Vlad didn't touch on the subject in this interview, but Kurt is a well known hit music producer also. Check the logistics of the statistics.

    • @joshuasutton983
      @joshuasutton983 8 років тому +3

      There is still a lot of simple rapper, but there is also a lot of complex rappers as well. Hip Hop started off as just simple party music, but it has evolved into numerous sub genres.

    • @josegomez6549
      @josegomez6549 8 років тому +3

      Yeah because Drake has complex lines. Because "Panda" has complex lines (although you could argue that due to that nigga's gibberish way of speaking, it can be considered 'complex'). Hip-Hop is still simple. Very few are on the you-need-a-master's-in-English lane of Hip-Hop in actuality.
