I'm a continental knitter and I'm been trying to learn "English" style so I can do fair isle. I didn't realize until I watched this that with "flicking" the needles are held at a different angle. Your right needle is much higher and angled up, not in the traditional "pie slice" hold. This has given me something to try. Thanks!!

That's a great technique, and I used to knit that way. Now I've recently learned the Colonial Noreigien method and can knit both ways. Love both methods. Love your podcasts! ❤️
Thanks for making this. I had to figure out how to hold the yarn for tension because I have tiny hands but I finally got it. I'm super slow but now I can practice and gain speed! So awesome because my yarn doesn't get all twisted up now.

I'm 71 and a "thrower" all my life of knitting and your technique totally amazes me. I try it but I get frustrated and then the yarn starts falling off my finger. Also, I never noticed, til recently, that a lot of knitters on UA-cam are using double pointed needles, for smaller items, other than the usual long needles. I've started doing that too and it helps. Thanks for this wonderful video and I'll comment again on how my "cramping" is doing.
Hi, l use magic loop with my interchangeables. I practice with Hiya Hiya and Chiaogoo, allthough l knitted for about 20 years with wooden needles. Now l never could think at a day l would want to change again, 'cause these smoth neecles are so great! Good luck!
No wonder you knocked out so many socks!! Congrats on that! This is how I started knitting a few years ago but I'm further back from the needles so it slows me down a bit. Plus, the yarn is only around my index finger twice and not tensioned on other fingers, as I found the yarn was too loose and slippery on other methods. I am 68 and learnt to knit a very old fashioned English way in South Africa. At 4 I had to hold my right hand needle like a pen, so the needle rested on the hollow between the thumb and for finger. I could knit quite fast this way, but when at 60 I got hooked on knitting socks, I had to change and tried so hard to knit continental way, I could do it but after so many years it was too slow. So I knit holding my needle like you with your right hand, but still move my thumb, I just can't get my index finger to move separately. I think after 64 years my brain can't change and knitting is my therapy so I just knit a bit slower. So glad the younger generation is knitting, it has helped me a lot when times are tough. We knit the same way. I equate my knitting style to be the same as a sewing machine. My right hand, index finger is the needle of a sewing machine and it moves as to dip into the bobbin and pick up the bobbin thread, or in the case of knitting it dips around the knitting needle. The faster I knit the more you can see how it's like the action of a sewing machine.

So impressive to watch your speed! Your video helped me a lot. I was learning flicking through some other tutorials but had very tight tension which is not good when you're wanting to move the loops along the needle quickly. After watching your video at 1/4 speed on UA-cam, I saw the the little nuances you use to move the knitted loop off the left needle and that helped me to loosen up my tension. I am new to knitting. I started about 4 months ago. I learned continental style from the beginning. Which I am comfortable with. After seeing you knit I wanted to try it and I did. I got the hang of it pretty quickly but I have one problem. My knitting is very, very tight. Any suggestions to relax it a bit? I have noticed however, that my stitches are very uniform and pretty!
I wrap the yarn the opposite way on my index finger. Try as I might, I can’t seem to control the yarn using your method. I also hold the needle like a pen rather than a knife, so my hand does not leave the right hand needle as I throw. Having knitted with this method for over 60 years it is very difficult to change but I’m all for trying methods out and keep giving it a go. By the way, you have a lovely voice to listen to and your videos are un-hurried. Nice to watch. Thank you. 🌺

Ive taught myself to flick too but am not as speedy , when I concentrate on my speed I get all fumble fingered so Ill just let it come with practice . i taught myself to pick too but that is just going to take to much practise since I was a thrower . I still lift my right thumb purl and knit . I love seeing how others knit , thanks for showing us?

Hi! Now it was a lot of time to get practice knitting that way: How do you feel with this kind of knitting after all? Is it like you imagined and wanted for yourself? I hope so! Please give me a set up! I learned how to flick the way ancoring the right needle with my left thumb and index and leding it double swing left l right between both hands so l but it with my right hand near to the left while flicking my yarneover the left needle. So it's only very tiny way my right hand has to move to do it and the stitch is made very fast. Short movements, all very quick, it's amazing! So close to like „Very pink knit“ - Stacy does. I have a twist around my index finger so that the yarn starts quite low down, coming over the finger, and then goes under the finger and comes back over the top by the nail in the way shown in the video.
Great video👍, I do knit with bothe hands. I am right handed however, i do everything except write with it. I knit faster with my left( i flick) and with my right i try to flick but it is much slower. I have a problem with the tension on my right hand. It always loosens up. I just can't believe how fast you and some other knitters knit. Keep the video's coming
Thanks for this. When I see people dropping the yarn every stitch, I just think that's how a child starts off when they first learn to knit. I've never seen any adult English knitters doing that. All my female relatives were knitters and they all worked with the yarn twisted in some way around the fingers of the right hand: there was no dropping it.
This is exactly how my nan used to knit and she used to knit at a rate of naughts all I used to hear when I was visiting was the click clack of needles going super fast
Thanks for the vid! I knit in the same fashion! But slower. I'm ok with speed, but like you said my purls and knits are different tensions. I've noticed this most if I'm doing a 1x1 rib or something similar, it makes my ribbing look like it has a "right side" and "wrong side," but I know that's not the case. Have you had any problems like this? Any tips?
What brand of needles are you using? What is your opinion of them. You are very good at tutorials, this was a good video! I throw stitches and love dpn's.
I've been knitting only two years. I began knitting English style, but am now attempting other methods. This seems more comfortable but my yarn slides back on my index finger. Is it just that I need more practice and keep it slow to maintain the correct motion?

Can you tell me what is the left hand finger is guiding ? The yarn over the needle to keep the stitch stabilized . Also the needles look like a T position .
Please, tell me if the angle of your needles is really 90 decree or how would you describe it? I'm not sure if I see correctly. And it seems to me that you hold the right needle with your 3 fingers all the time. I'm a continental knitter and I kind of flick the yarn with my index finger of my left hand most of the time - sometimes I pick up the yarn with the right hand needle. I'd like to learn your method! Any tips?

try tensioning the yarn differently or wrap it round another finger ... I'm sorry I dont have any other suggestions you have to find a way that works for you. I can only show you how I do things my way but that doesn't always mean it will work for everyone else.

I am left handed and taught myself to knit years ago. I am not sure if I hold the yarn in the correct hand or not. I have tried continental and have not had any luck with it I found you on utube yesterday and love the way you knit by flicking. I practiced yesterday and it is much easier for me than trying to learn continental. I hold my yarn in my right hand on knitting and crocheting both. So I am not sure it I knit and crochet left handed or not. I knitted a swatch about 4 inches. It sure looks better than the way I did knit. My tension is very tight but it sure looks better than the tension I had the regular way. Would you have any suggestions how to loosen my tension a little bit. You are an amazing knitter and an amazing human being! What is your record for a) knitting a pair of socks and b) knitting a sweater? I also admire your ability to pack and unpack (with small child and cat in tow) to move across continents so often almost at the drop of a hat (hand knitted, of course, LOL)
I can knit a pair of socks in a day if I do nothing else ... not sure for a sweater as I always have other things going on but 10 days was the fastest I knit one before

The thing is, unless you do it for a living, knitting is meant to be a pleasurable pastime so I don't see the point in trying to go so fast. It's impressive but looks exhausting! I do quite a lot of cable and Aran work and it would not be possible to go as fast as this lady.
its not exhausting at all for me ... i enjoy knitting fast as it means i can knit more projects which i find pleasureable... i actually find going slower to be more exhausting ... each to there own and you don't have to knit fast if you dont want to ... i'm not saying you have to knit fast ... but i get asked a lot about how i knit which is why i made this video
It's certainly impressive. I did try it but can't seem to get the tension in the yarn, not using the fingers you use to wind it round. It flopped all over the place. I guess there's really no right or wrong way to knit.

I do the same thing, but I tension by wrapping the yarn twice around my middle finger. Works well for me :)

I have tried this method but have a difficult time holding my tension constant. Any suggests?
I hold tension by twisting the yarn around my pinkie and holding my index finger close to the work.
This is also my problem because the way I usually hold tension when throwing (held between ring and middle finger) doesn’t work with this technique.

What brand of needles are you using? What is your opinion of them. You are very good at tutorials, this was a good video! I throw stitches and love dpn's.

Super mam how to purl stitch
I've been knitting only two years. I began knitting English style, but am now attempting other methods. This seems more comfortable but my yarn slides back on my index finger. Is it just that I need more practice and keep it slow to maintain the correct motion?
Faster than continental knitters it seems.
Do you do the same movements with bigger yarns and needles?

Thanks for the video, been a thrower for years and just recently began practicing this flicking knit method. However when I tried to purl this way I found the yarn slipping out from the index finger. did this happen to you at first?

Tiny needles, are you holding the tiny needle in your right hand, not visible. So only good for tiny needles?
Can you tell me what is the left hand finger is guiding ? The yarn over the needle to keep the stitch stabilized . Also the needles look like a T position .
the left hand is just pushing the stitches along the needle to the tip for knitting

Please, tell me if the angle of your needles is really 90 decree or how would you describe it? I'm not sure if I see correctly. And it seems to me that you hold the right needle with your 3 fingers all the time. I'm a continental knitter and I kind of flick the yarn with my index finger of my left hand most of the time - sometimes I pick up the yarn with the right hand needle. I'd like to learn your method! Any tips?
yeah I guess I do hold my needles at a sort of 90 degree angle but its not something I do conciously.
@@KnittingExpat Thank you for conforming this. I really can't understand how you are able to knit so fast and your index finger with the yarn moves just a little bit. Not any big movements forward or in any directions. Amazing. Would like to see another video from you from different angle.

Do you find a difference in yarn thicknesses. I'm much faster with lace or even sport weight then DK or bulky
I tried this serveral times, but I fail by not getting tension on the yarn, its so loose, that I loose all the stitches, what can I do?
try tensioning the yarn differently or wrap it round another finger ... I'm sorry I dont have any other suggestions you have to find a way that works for you. I can only show you how I do things my way but that doesn't always mean it will work for everyone else.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! I just have to learn and practice I think. I knit continental style, and holding the yarn in the right hand is very confusing. Sometimes I notice, that I try to hold it in both hands 😂
I am left handed and taught myself to knit years ago. I am not sure if I hold the yarn in the correct hand or not. I have tried continental and have not had any luck with it I found you on utube yesterday and love the way you knit by flicking. I practiced yesterday and it is much easier for me than trying to learn continental. I hold my yarn in my right hand on knitting and crocheting both. So I am not sure it I knit and crochet left handed or not. I knitted a swatch about 4 inches. It sure looks better than the way I did knit. My tension is very tight but it sure looks better than the tension I had the regular way. Would you have any suggestions how to loosen my tension a little bit. Thank you so much for making this video of flicking. I learned alot from you. Your are such a blessing for making this!

What is your record for a) knitting a pair of socks and b) knitting a sweater? I also admire your ability to pack and unpack (with small child and cat in tow) to move across continents so often almost at the drop of a hat (hand knitted, of course, LOL)
I can knit a pair of socks in a day if I do nothing else ... not sure for a sweater as I always have other things going on but 10 days was the fastest I knit one before

Too fast, can't see how you move the needles as you are grabbing the yarn
There is no way to wrap the yarn while still holding right needle, you can see the frustration
The thing is, unless you do it for a living, knitting is meant to be a pleasurable pastime so I don't see the point in trying to go so fast. It's impressive but looks exhausting! I do quite a lot of cable and Aran work and it would not be possible to go as fast as this lady.
its not exhausting at all for me ... i enjoy knitting fast as it means i can knit more projects which i find pleasureable... i actually find going slower to be more exhausting ... each to there own and you don't have to knit fast if you dont want to ... i'm not saying you have to knit fast ... but i get asked a lot about how i knit which is why i made this video
It's certainly impressive. I did try it but can't seem to get the tension in the yarn, not using the fingers you use to wind it round. It flopped all over the place. I guess there's really no right or wrong way to knit.
