How to Setup a Simple DIY Photo Studio
Вставка

- This week I installed a three roll seamless backdrop system that converts my garage into a photo studio in seconds. It also stores out of the way when I'm not using it. This was a really simple build and I will take you step by step through how to install one in your space.

Quick note on the build. I've had some people suggest adding a metal tube to the system, because the cardboard can loose its rigidity over time. I'm adding these into my system, and you can find the tubes here: Metal Support Tube for Seamless amzn.to/3rjVf5V
Also the white guides should be horizontal and the weights are hung from the chain through the smaller bits 👌👌
For a *real* seamless background you have the rolls backwards - the paper needs to curl onto the floor - in other words: you use the inside of the paper roll. So, how it is done: lower the paper, let it settle on the floor for the depth you need, tape down edges. Let relax for a bit, adjust the tension to achieve a gentle transition between horizontal and vertical, lock in place.
(I worked my way through art school as an assistant commercial photographer… that’ why I dare educate you, : ))
To all those questioning the plastic chain. I had this kit installed in my living room (conveniently hidden behind a boxed in ceiling beam) as I did product photography on the side on a regular basis. I used it several times a week for 10 years and never had an issue with the chain (nor did I ever add a metal support tube to any of the rolls). Worked great and paid for itself many times over.
Great video. I am terrible at photographing my sculptures and every photography channel I try and watch has super intricate/ expensive/ complicated set ups. Glad to finally see a setup I think I can actually accomplish!
Awesome. I bought my first Bogen Background Roller System about 30 years ago and used two of them in my photography studio. A very efficient setup.
Man, with all the solid colors from your papers, I noticed that my screen was very dirty. It looked like you had all kind of smudges and discolorations on your papers, but in fact it was my screen. Thanks 👍😊
Haha! Omg I noticed that too.. I didn’t realize my scree was so dirty 😂
Thanks for sharing not only the build, but the challenges and process as well.
Michael - for not being a professional photographer, you used the correct terminology, great job. This is a good solution and as a note for your viewers, the other solution is a fabric backdrop. The issues with that were addressed in Michael's video - a fabric would collect dust and keep the dust, they are much heavier and more awkward to use. Seamless is cheap, easy to install and replace and if it does get dirty....it cuts quite easily. Just don't over-tighten the "chains" as they can break.
Right on time! I am trying to figure out a backdrop system for myself. Thanks for posting.
Great simple solution for the backdrop. I learned a lot from the lighting demo, really great to see how adjusting the lights can change the feel.
I love how the music stopped when you turned off the turntable. Clever. :)
I’ve been planning on installing one of these backdrop racks to my shop for a while. You provided some great tips and information on what you’re using. Your ideas will make my install much easier. Thanks.
Bro, you kept saying you're not a photographer, but I've learnt more from your video than I have from most acclaimed photographers. Thanks for sharing this knowledge with people like me. God bless you... please keep making such videos
This looks like a great system. In our community theater, this would work great for workshops and head shots not to mention possible backdrop options. Thanks for showing this 👍
Your talents are mind blowing sir! Thanks for sharing!
Awesome diy studio set up!! Thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful weekend. 👍
Looks so much more usable and the results are fantastic! The cost is actually way more affordable than I would have thought!
Thanks Ethan!!
Thanks Michael. Very (ahem) illuminating!
Great video. I like learning about woodworking and use your channel a lot. I'm in film and to give you an easy paper roll tip, flip the rolls around so the natural curl comes towards you and not back. This will help with those seamless infinity shots. Thanks for posting this. Makes me want to instal one in my garage now.
cool to see how you use the backdrop and the examples are also very cool! Thanks for that!👍🏻
This is super helpful, thanks Michael!
Super!
Beautiful set up Michael👌👌.
my dad is a wood worker whos starting youtube and this helped him a lot :)
Thank you. This has sparked some ideas. I like that you used inexpensive lights for your setup. I want to set up a headshot studio in my garage.
I'm currently trying to improve my DIY photogrammetry setup and all you recommendations pretty much come at the best possible time. Hope I can find this stuff here in Europe. Anyways, thanks a lot, Michael.
Holy shit... Your intro with the changing backround was AMAZING! Well done! Thanks for sharing as always :)
Hahaha! Thanks!
Wow, this was so helpful!
You can also project your designs on it.......cool stuff really 👍👍👍
Thanks for this. I’m not there yet but great food for thought for the track I hope.
This is a great seat up.
Great intro with the changing backgrounds! And I love the lighting tips. I never thought to use lights to change the background color
Thanks Johnny! I’m shocked it worked 😂
Thank you so much for the light trick under the garage door track!!! I’ve struggled for months on how to install those last 2 lights🤦🏻♂️Just put up 2 more led shop lights under that track tonight 💪🏼
Great idea and thank you again, you do great work btw
Nice!! Glad it was helpful
Lovely video
Fantastic mate 👍🏻
In addition to what Andrew Alexander added, those white things at the top are to prevent the chains jumping and should be horizontal as per the instructions you showed.
Also, I always used a homemade spring clip at each end and in the centre of each roll to keep it tightly rolled and prevent the paper unravelling
(In my case I made these clips by bending a flat piece of metal scavenged from a suspension file which I shaped around a cylinder that was slightly smaller than the paper roll).
Very cool thanks!
Lots of usefull stuff!! I'm tired of ironing fabric background 🤣🤣
Very informative
Great realization for your set, the next upgrade could be the "green background" for editing videos with special effects.
Great Michael, I always follow you, keep it up. SL
Dope video just found this video!
Great project! Greetings from Russia!
Add a thin strip of wood across the bottom of the paper to add weight and prevent the paper from moving off track on the roll. Plus you don't have to wait for the paper to relax when unrolling it. That is what we used to do in the photo studios.
Super
Call me old school, but I like to see your talking head in your shop.
That said, this is a great photo setup! The white esp ... makes the table look like it's floating.
Great video, Michael; very well presented and most informative. What are the colors of the different backdrops that you featured in this video?
Thumbs up 👍!
Thanks for the video Michael. Very helpful. Can I ask what lens you use for product photography? I’m never quite satisfied with my project pics
Very like
Great video. Pet portrait tutorial please?
Just in case it wasn't mentioned, you may want to add a weight (leader bar) to the leading edges of the rolls. There are multiple benefits.
Hey Boss, just though I'd mention, I have this set up in my studio. Because of the direction the paper is rolled, I have my paper turned so it rolls out from UNDER not over, that way you are not fight the curve of the paper as you roll it out and on to the floor or a table top. You can leave your chains on the side where you have them just take the ends out of your rolls and turn the paper so the end with the tensioners becomes the end with the chains. . . . . . . . . . . . (edit) oooops, just saw Douglas Adrian left the same comment. . . cool.
Totally! I've changed it now 😂 it's way better!!
How translucent is the white one? You could shine colored lights on the back of it, while you illuminate the subject with white light. You could name your background color and make it happen. Of course, that won't work if you lay part of the backdrop on the floor or on a table, unless you use a transparent table.
the weights on the chains are installed backwards. the circle part is supposed to be on the outside hanging and the chain runs along the grooves on the inside of the flat part.
Hey, put. Difusor in your light, a transparent paper used to work
Normally we use the inside of the seamless paper background, so this will easily curl on the floor.
Have you found the paper rolls to sag? As so many times they start sagging and cause wriggles in paper, why you need to install stronger aluminium pipe in them, preferable to have as large outside diameter as the roll has inner diameter.
What tripod do you use for the yn216?
Well done Michael, but your Amazon-Shop Link doesn't work ... also which Camera are you using? Would be a kind of Fabric like in greenscreens more durable while you get dents in the paper?
I can't be fully sure, but it does look like that mounting hardware is not designed to go into bare drywall as you said - they look like concrete anchors. If you try them in drywall, you'd probably break the whole block...
Can you please tell me which cobb llght you bought the 45 or the 35. And what adapter ??? because when I went on the link there are so many different adapters ... I too have the newer soft box
When a woodworker has a better photography setup than my broke ass lol
καλημέρα Πολύ ωραίο βίντεο
Would it help to maybe glue a dowel rod to the bottom end of the paper as a bit of weight. Like you'd see on blinds.
Or a ½" or ¾" PVC pipe. If needed, slide steel rods into the pipe to add weight. Remove the rods before rolling up the papers, so they won't unroll by themselves.
Nice addition to the shop! But what about dust? There is no more boxes to protect backdrops
Thanks! Only the last little bit is exposed, so I'm not too concerned about the dust. Also if it gets too dirty I can cut away some of the paper and start fresh. There's 12 yards on the roll.
Jeez, your garage ceiling is so tall!
12 feet! It might be the best feature in the shop 😁
I know this is almost a year old now, but I bet those get dusty with it being in the shop. Maybe build a 3 sided box to cover the backdrops when not In use. Have the bottom be open so they can still be used but at least dust wont fall onthem .
Eyyy
How is the camera setting iso and other Things
0:01 Is that the music from Silence of the Lambs?? lol
I thought the same thing! I was waiting for the tuck. lol
Buy pvc pipes an store them in there add end caps
Why not use a green screen ? then in post-processing (of video or photo); you can add whatever background (color, pattern, texture) that you want. Seems like a lot of trouble and expense for a limited number of options.
Most studios are DIY 😂
