My favorite quote from Ace is him saying he loves when people talk to him at a show or something and they say something about how they love what he was saying in his song or an entire album and he'll always reply with "how the fuck did you know what I was saying in that tho?? I'm still trying to figure out what the fuck I even said in that album." Paraphrased

This song is like super super super dense compared to Aesop's whole discography. It sorta pains me that a lot of people are introduced to him through this song because it's just so overwhelming. Try something like "Blood Sandwich", "No Regrets", or even "Sword Box" off his album with producer Tobacco (they use the artist name Malibu Ken) to get a feel for his ability to make a song without being ridiculously cryptic. You can catch the lyrics as well as vibe with the music on those without listening to the song a hundred times to understand it's meaning.
That said, I really liked the reaction. You're close with it being about mainstream hip hop, but to me it's always seemed like a jab at society at large which of course rap has been and still is a major part of. The majority of big points he's hitting are about societal norms and how ridiculous they seem to him. "I'm trying to help" is reaching out to the listener saying "If you experience this, I do too. You're right, it is fucked up." That only scratches the surface, the rest is for you to piece together. I really hope you stick with Aes, I think he has a lot of good to say and it hits a really warm place for those of us who appreciate master artistry.
