      Hello Winston, we ( myself, wife, son8, daughter5) live in an appartment ( ground floor ) that has a 650 sqft balcony + we are pretty much door door people. We are planning on getting a Aussie shepherd heeler mix . Do you think living in the Appartment may be a possible issue ?

    • @winstontheaussieshep
      @winstontheaussieshep  Рік тому

      @Migara Abeysekara Hello! I think it can work as long as you get their energy out, crate train them and have done research on the breed. Playing on the balcony/backyard won't be enough but it is a quick and good way to get energy out

    Our black tri is almost a year and a half. BEST thing we ever did. Yeah, he’s no couch potato but we didn’t sign up for that. He’s so freaking smart and loyal. I love how vocal he is. He’s a routine sort of pup, so as this point there aren’t too many surprises. He just want to play and be loved. Great video. ❤️

    Sounds like you truly understand your aussie. You were spot on about their need for attention/jobs. But what a loyal pet! Some people call them Velcro dogs because they are so attached to their owners. Ours is a great guard dog, although that is not why we got her. And what a beauty...ours is a tricolor with heterochromia. One blue and one brown eye. Thanks for being straight about the dog breed. Not a dog for couch potatoes.

    I'm on my third, and they are all-in-all-the-time. They are high energy, but they're also very trainable, and they can be a lot of fun. They're curious and like to be engaged with their owner. It's true that they're velcro dogs -highly loyal, and the best situation is when the owner is loyal in kind. Fetch, walks, (with our others we walked in snow in the mountains!). Brush-outs, and watching their diet (they are notorious eaters) is all essential. They're great dogs, but definitely not for those who just want a lap dog. We had ours herding sheep for a few lessons, but then it became apparent that the time was better spent training him to be an excellent companion dog. These dogs can do very well in AKC obedience trials.

    I've had some dogs in my life including 2 Aussie's, but there was one in particular, Hunter, The Mighty Hunter as I used to think of him, that dog was absolutely fearless, I never once saw him back down from anything, not even a Bull Mastiff one time that he perceived as a threat to me, he took off after that thing fangs out, he was so protective of me.
    And obnoxious? That's hardly the word, people used to ask me if he was destructive, I'd tell them "Only in front of me", if he got mad about being left alone he wouldn't touch anything, until I got back, then at his convenience he'd come trotting out of my bedroom with a pillow or something and with it still in his mouth he'd look at me and growl, I'd look back at him and say "You better not, you better get that God D$%"ed pillow out of your mouth right now or..." and at that point he'd shake it until the feathers were flying through the air then slam it on the floor and give me one bark then take off through the house with me chasing after him.
    Energetic? Australian Shepherd's are energetic, then there was Hunter, they needed to invent a new word for what he was.
    Domineering? It was his house and he ruled it and any other dogs in it with an iron paw, I used to tell people "I swear to God that dog's one little mustache away from invading Poland", I knew when I left he'd keep the others in line, people who knew us knew they could bring their dogs over to my house to play in the huge yard that I had and he wouldn't let their dog's get anywhere near the road, he'd show his fangs if he had to in order to turn them back towards the house, he absolutely ruled the pack.
    And he had this personality and charm that was absolutely infectious, everyone just adored him and all the other dogs wanted to be just like him, he was 100% rock star.
    The way dogs use their front teeth to nip through their fur when they flea themselves, he'd do that all through my beard, and every year in the spring when I'd cut my beard off he'd get mad, but he'd still do it through my mustache and all through my hair, he starting doing it when he was 4 months old and despite me being able feel his front teeth on my skin he never once over all those years so much as nipped me, skilled like a surgeon.
    I've never in my life been so close to another living creature as I was with that dog, we went everywhere together and I never had to put him on a leash because he'd never leave my side, he was absolutely dedicated to me and our home, he tolerated absolutely no uninvited creature's coming into his yard, he was hard on the chipmunk population let me tell you, and he didn't outright kill them so much as he played with them to death, it was actually a horrible thing to watch but hey, I didn't tell him how to act and he didn't tell me, he was his own person and I let him be his own person.
    He was the bravest most loyal friend I've ever met in my life, I wasn't his master, we were buddies, and if I've ever met a soul in my life that had the heart of a soldier it was that dog, when I buried him I put my medals from the Army in his grave with him, he deserved them more than I did.

      Sounds like an amazing dog! I just put down my 12 uear old lab that saved my life 6 years ago. I had overdosed on heroin in my basement and my big lab never went down the basement stairs in her life and couldn't see me from the top. She somehow knew to go to my sleeping wife in the middle of the night and cry until she woke up then she ran to the top of the stairs crying and my wife was freaked out because she had never even heard our dog cry before. Wife came downstairs and found me blue and unconscious. She gave me chest compressions until EMTs arrived and gave me narcan and they said another 5 minutes and I would have been gone to the point of no return. I spent the last 6 years paying her back every single day and in her last 2 years she became diabetic and I gave her 2 shots a day. I watched diabetes first take her eyesight so I became her guide in life which I was proud to do. Unfortunately her hips were a problem and she then lost her hearing about 4 months ago. I spent every waking moment by her sode trying to help her along but it was sad and quite frankly selfish to keep pushing her when her whole life was becoming a closed box. I could tell for the first time in her life she had become scared because of her lack of senses. The last month I had to physically be touching her at all times to keep her comfort and put a blanket in the yard every night and layed with her from about 5 until midnight just petting her while she relaxed and sniffed the cool air. Making the decision for her betterment was the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life. Me and my wife got married 11 years ago and don't have kids so she was really our world. I still struggle every day without my guardian angel and it has upended my entire life. I never bought into the idea of a "support" dog but now I realize she supported me and my my mental health more than I ever realized. I can never have a lab again so I'm thinking Australian Sheppard or a border collie. Quite frankly I'm terrified to get so close to a dog again but I feel lost without a dog to come home to, walk, take places, sleep with me and my wife and everything else. I'm waiting out of respect of my guardian angel Lucy but I think in January or February we will be getting something. I just hope the next dog has half the heart my first had.

    We have 2 ourselves. One Red Tri, and one Red Merle. One is high energy, the other is medium to low energy. I totally get the daily frisbee routine. My energy dog, herds my other dog even. And if they aren't listening to me to come inside when I want, I herd them. The only issue we have is my energy dog is triggered by movement like crazy, so any movement at the neighbors, in the road, , ow whatever he sees, causes a lot of barking. But these are the best dogs I have ever owned, and I may not own another breed ever.

      He is good with the cats. To be transparent with you, he has tried to herding them a couple of times recently because of the "teenage phase" which is no fault of his own. Additionally, he is protective of his food, but I hand feed everyone of his meals to avoid this behavior and is a great way to train him. Other than that, he is great with them and wants to play with them. The cats just don't want to play with him 🤣

    Love your aussie content I am thinking of getting myself a male aussie in a few weeks and I have a friend saying that aussies are not for people who live out in the city and they do better out in the country part of town I was wondering if you've had any issues in that regard

    • @winstontheaussieshep
      @winstontheaussieshep  Рік тому

      Thabk you 🙂. I live in the suburbs but I would say as long as you are putting in the effort to desensitize your dog to the city noises and scenery and to make sure they are properly exercised then I don't see a problem.

    • @WesterStarThunder
      @WesterStarThunder 9 місяців тому

      @@winstontheaussieshep You make a very good point on desensitizing. We take Sasha everywhere dogs are allowed. We keep her on a short leash and under control at all time on the excursions. We live in the subs on 1 acre of land, but want her to understand traffic. She sits at the road, looks left looks right looks left and then we cross.

    We also bought an Australian Shepherd a few days ago and will pick it up in three weeks. In your video I can see Winston getting along with cats, how did you do it? 😁 We have three cats and I would like socialization to be successful and that all our animals like (or at least tolerate) each other. More tips will always come in handy😁 Of course, we already have cat pheromones and a lot of toys for the dog to distract him from cats. We want to build the most positive relationship between them 🙂

    • @winstontheaussieshep
      @winstontheaussieshep  Рік тому +8

      Congratulations!! 😄 yes our cats tolerate Winston but there are times where he pushes his luck and gets Swatted at 😅 (he loves them). When we picked up Winston we had him sit on a pillow that all three of the cats use that way he's already smelling them before even seeing them. At home we put up a baby gate separating the main floor from the basement. He was upstairs while the cats were down. If the cats wanted to jump over and investigate they could and if it was ever too much they could alway jump back over. When it was time for bed we put Winston in our room with the door closed and the cats had the entire house to roam and smell where Winston has been, smell his toys etc. You can do a similar exercise with just a room rather than 2 separate floor. You would close the door to a room all day with all three cats (make sure they have food, water and whatever else to make them comfortable) then at night let them roam. Do this for a week and see where they are all at. I would only introduce them when you know you aussie is sleepy, sleeping or relaxed. Don't want him chasing them 😅 hope this helps 🙂

      @magdalenapytlarz1607 Рік тому +1

      @@winstontheaussieshep Cool! Thanks for the idea with a baby gate. For the first weeks / days (depending on the success of the whole mission haha), we want the cats to only smell and hear the dog, we want to introduce eye contact only later, as we observe that cats do not react badly to the smell of the dog. Of course, our cats are residents and we must ensure their high comfort when introducing the next family member (the cats did not have or had poor contact with dogs), so we look for as much advice as possible. A gate for children will be something that will allow cats to take a break from the dog if they feel like it (or if they are still afraid)🙂. Of course, we love all our pets and we try to provide them with the greatest possible quality of life 🙂

      Our cat Squeekers lived with our last Aussie. Been five years with no dog. So she knows dogs. We keep the puppy on a leash at all times. Squeekers in her own time over the last three weeks has approached Sasha (puppy) and are getting along. Sasha no longer charges at the cat.

    How can people own a dog and not take them out daily? Rain or shine or snow and cold (and here in Finland it gets down to -20 or lower Celsius), one has to take every breed (Id say even the toy dogs) for at least 2-3 walks a day. Were planning on getting a Bohemian shepherd, but were looking a bit into this breed as well, tho we prefer the Bohemian. For those who dont want to walk, fish are a solution as pets, as even cats need their walk (were required to keep cats on the leash in Finland).
